Why did my rankings drop so fast?
-
Hi Mozzers,
One of my clients have suffered from a sudden ranking loss that started beginning of August.
A little background: My client is a big cleaning company that has many franchises nationwide and had very good rankings for the past few months. Generally the busiest time of the year is summer and the 4th quarter is the slowest. Organic Traffic generally drops by 5 to 10% between Q3 and Q4 of each year.
2 things have caught my attention while investigating these ranking losses
- The latest recent Update from the moz index evaluated the website's DA of 48 when in the summer we had a DA of 56. Never seen such a drop before!! My first question is how accurate is the moz index? How can I make sure this data is accurate? I am very surprised because we have been working hard on getting good quality links for the past year and a half. If the DA is accurate then that could explain the ranking loss
- Google updating its search engine to the Hummingbird version. Do you guys think this has anything to do with the drop in rankings? The content on the website is not the best but is fairly decent. I am still not sure how the ranking drop could be related to Hummingbird?
I have also checked webmaster tools to see if I got hit somehow by penguin and it seems fine.
Thanks mozzers

Hey There
Just to add to Remus's answer (which was very thorough, thanks for that) - to explain a little bit more about Moz's DA. Each time Moz updates there linkscape index (which open site explorer is based on) there index may change slightly.
So you may still have links from sites out there on there net, but every once and a while month Moz will have them in their index and the next month their index might get a little smaller and they may not show, and thus you didn't really lose authority, it just appears that way.
So I'd track something like DA with a long term approach (like 6-12 months) and watch for it to go up year over year - especially if your in a space that's not going to pile on links as quickly as like retail etc.
Hummingbird was the end of August, and didn't throw off people's rankings so much, so this is very unlikely to have anything to do with the ranking change.
I don't see any other major alo changes at that time. (you can check here: http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change) - but it would be worth doing what Remus suggests and digging a little deeper into your analytics, backlinks profile etc and see if you can pinpoint anything more specific. One good approach is to try and pinpoint if it's sitewide or just specific keywords/pages.

Hi Taysir,
Domain Authority is Moz's calculated metric for how well a given webpage is likely to rank in Google's search results. It uses a machine learning model to predictively find an algorithm that best correlates with rankings across the thousands of search results that we predict against.
In terms of accuracy (the level of correlation with Pagerank and other signals from Google) it's pretty good. A lot of professional SEM's are using it to get a general idea of how competitive a given site is in Google.com. But, in your case, a difference of 7 points does not say anything. If we compare two different websites which have a 7 point difference we can't say that one is ranking better than the other. One of them could focus on very specific terms and rank better there (even with a lower DA) than the other with more general approach for users.
There are a few other things that cause fluctuations in DA, which are not in your control:
-
Moz says: "We constantly update the algorithm used to calculate Page Authority, so you may see your score fluctuate from time to time."
-
Some of the websites you got links from might loose some of their powerful links - and even if you constantly add more, if the loss is bigger than what you gain - you will see a drop in DA
And a few more things:
-
Don't rely on DA to "explain the ranking loss". It was not meant for this. Instead try to match the Mozcast Google Algorithm Change History with the drop in your rankings.
-
Webmaster Tools does not tell you if you were hit by Penguin, Panda, or Hummingbird. It tells you if you have a manual penalty which is a totally different thing. If you see a drop in impressions in GWT you could be hit by any of the above. Try to do the timing check mentioned above.

Google RankBrain Update Affecting Ranking Reports?
In the past 2 months we have been seeing a large amount of movement in our ranking reports in Moz Pro. Here is what is going on: We run reports for around 15 different clients using Moz. We also track around an average of 100-150 different keywords for each client (some more, some less). What I have seen lately is that we have a week where the sites do great, next week a large shift down. The week after a large shift up. The next week a large shift down. Rinse, repeat. It makes it very hard to spot the trouble areas on a page or keyword when there doesn't really seem to be a consistent way of knowing what the trends are. It appears to be random, and the next week they seem to recover, along with some that do not. We will see some keywords drop 30 places, only to regain the majority of that drop the following week. Some of the sites have received content updates while others have remained largely untouched. It is very confusing to see this pattern, and I have tracked it for about 2 months. Is anyone seeing a similar pattern in their reports? Could this be related to the rollout of Google's RankBrain, the new AI learning tech from Google? Most of the keywords are tracked are not long tail, and are basic local business/service type of keywords. Plumber in St Louis, etc etc

Massive Rank Changes in Bing/Yahoo Only - What's up w/ Rank Tracker?
I'll be honest, it's pretty shameful how little attention I give Bing and Yahoo. But something recently caught my eye - I have a client who according to rank tracker is all over the place in yahoo/bing...up 20 positions for some kw's, down 12 for others...meanwhile Google's holding steady, and Google data seems mostly accurate - with one exception of showing 46th position for an exact match branded search that they're #1 for. I know Rank Tracker has been going through some fine tuning, right? I don't manually check Yahoo/Bing - I can't imagine those #'s are accurate though. Am I right to assume it's incorrect data? Just curious, any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks

Erroneous "Weekly Keyword Ranking & On-page Optimization Report" For Campaign
Hi, I just received an email alert from Seomoz telling me my "Weekly Keyword Ranking & On-page Optimization Report " for the period 11/06/12 - 11/13/12 is ready. It is just a copy of the previous report though, all rankings and ranking changes are the same. What is up with that? Best regards, Martin

Local Rankings Drop?
G'morning! I got a disturbing report this morning that showed seven of our big keywords drop from high on the first page to not in the top 50. After further research I have found that we are now in Google's local cluster, but no longer on the traditional organic results. My question is this, has Google changed something that doesn't allow results in the local cluster AND in the traditional organic listings? I'm assuming that this is the case because we're doing smart SEO and have built these rankings up nicely over time, but then just fell off the face of the earth. I have attached a snapshot of Moz's Ranking History for a few of the keywords, as I assume this will help explain the story. (We're in green). Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks! euxQb kwAqh pUxkC

Domain and Page authority dropped on home page
My two strongest links did not show up in the latest Open Site Explorer run. Business.com and BOTW.com...Linking domains went from 21 to 15. Domain dropped 3 pts and Page authority dropped 3 pts I believe. Is there a function in SEOmoz.org that lets you track your domain scores over time? Thanks, Boo

How to rank 1000s of subcategories [E-commerce]
Hi guys, I run an eCommerce store that has 1000s of subcategories, yes it's a lot but my niche requires that many. Using Traffic Travis, SEOmoz and other tools I can say that these are Easy/Very Easy to get ranked for. (Sounds good, but it's not that easy) If I'm honest my site has on site SEO done however I don't have unique content on each of the sub categories as it would take to much time, should I spend my time adding unique content to each one? I also need to increase page authority to my inner pages, how can I achieve this? My competitors on each subcategory are linking to there other subcategory should I do the same? I'm just not sure how deep linking works. My niche is printers/ink that's why I need lots of subcategorys however I'm just lost on what to do at the moment and I really need to increase sales! Thanks for reading.

Fishy Rank 1\. Google Algorithm Bug?
We have noticed some strange rankings for a while that do not make any type of logical sense from an SEO standpoint. After an SEO review, it is found that these sites rank for top terms in very competitive markets for no clear reason. To demonstrate, here is research for one of the categories where this is taking place. Google for "Phoenix Computer Repair" Rank #1: www.datafast.net/phoenix-computer-repair.html Rank #2: www.mobiletechsupport.com Rank #4: www.mypctechs.com Linkscape Visualization and Comparison Report The first thing we run is a linkscape visualization and comparison report. Compare site #1 to #4 or site #2 to #4. In all instances, site #1 and site #2 are completely dominated by site #4. Visualizer stats, with higher ranking site #1 on the left. Lower ranking site #4 on right: | Overall Score | 29% | 53% |
Moz Pro | | mypctechs
| Page mozRank | 3.72 37% | 5.66 57% |
| Page mozTrust | 5.41 54% | 6.09 61% |
| External mozRank | 3.38 34% | 5.62 56% |
| Subdomain mozRank | 3.91 39% | 5.70 57% |
| Domains Linking | 11 12% | 74 29% |
| External Links | 10 0% | 17461 60% | ********Linkscape Report Next, running a linkscape report to evaluate inbound links for site #1 shows a collection of cheap profile spam links. There actually appear to be no high quality inbound links: ****http://fastw3b.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3432;sa=summary TARGET: www.datafast.net/phoenix-computer-repair.html TITLE: View the profile of Phoenix12****Anchor Text: Computer Repair Phoenix URL Metrics mozRank: 0.00 mozTrust: 0.00 Passing: 1.59 domain Metrics (fastw3b.net) mozRank: 5.19 mozTrust: 5.05 http://djdriblemouth.com/Simple Machines Forum 1.1.11 blog/index.php?action=profile;u=1897;sa=summary TARGET: www.datafast.net/phoenix-computer-repair.html TITLE: View the profile of Phoenix59****Anchor Text: Computer Repair Phoenix URL Metrics mozRank: 0.00 mozTrust: 0.00 Passing: 1.56 domain Metrics (djdriblemouth.com) mozRank: 2.38 mozTrust: 2.59 http://www.bettingfc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1990;sa=summary TARGET: www.datafast.net/phoenix-computer-repair.html TITLE: View the profile of Phoenix59 ********Checking Page Text and Content Full evaluation of the top site #1 shows there's not much relevant content on the pages to warrant rank 1. Just a few bare pages with very little text. Site #2 does have a lot of on-page information, but still not enough useful information to justify rank #2 in this market. ********So, what's going on? How is site #1 without any good inbound link and very little page content and site #2 with little inbound links and low trust ranking above sites with tens of thousands more inbound links, sites with more content, and sites that dominate in every way with MOZRank. Is this some kind of black-hat SEO that is exploiting an unpublished weakness in Google? If so, what method is being used? Spammy profile links? The current site ranked #1 has been reported to Google as SPAM 3 times in the past. Every time it disappears from the top ranking for a few weeks, but is back again a short time later.0
