Redirecting Pages from site A to site B
-
Hi,
I have a client who have a solid, high ranking content based site (site A). They have now created an ecommerce site in addition (site B).
To give site B a boost in terms of search engine visibility upon launch, they now wish to redirect approx 90% of site As pages to site B.
What would be the implications of this? Apart from customers being automatically redirected from the page they thought they where landing on, how would google now view site A?
What are your thoughts to thier idea. I am trying to talk them out of it as I think its a poor one.

DO NOT interlink your sites with dofollow links, Google hates this kind of activity and can penalize both sites for this.
It is a blatant attempt to self promote your own site and will be seen as a paid link. If you have a good site, I would not mess with it.
I would look at better ways to integrate the eCommerce site into the current existing site, why do you need a new site with a new url?

Thanks Chris,
A good Answer.

You would have a drop in rankings.
Normally if you 301 a page to a relevant page you shouldn't loose any link juice however if you don't there is a lose.
Matt Cutts does touch on it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Filv4pP-1nw
Site A would vanish and Site B wouldn't rank as well as the established site A it's sort of like chopping it in half you don't have a whole site only two half ranked sites (to a degree)
I wouldn't say Google would see it as cloaking etc. (unless you move the 301 back after a short while) Google should look at the 301 and think "This is now where all the links should go" however if there is no relevance there it might think "well this isn't relevance to this search query" and then give priority to a page that may have more relevance.
Unfortunately its a bit vague sorry but it's always a tad Hard to give certains. If you're going to remove site A all together then 301 its fine but if your doing it as a quick fix it will work in the short term but longer term your going to find it a bit harder.
as I mentioned it may be easier to have links to relevant pages so if your on site A on a product you could have a link to site B with a similar product. you would be sharing the juice to a degree and reinforcing the relevance of both sites.
Feel free to get more advice as more research never hurts and that's just an opinion really but good luck let us know how it all goes.

Thanks Chris,
What do you thin the negatives would be? Literally, the client wants to redirect site a's man navigation menus to site B.
Would google then look at site a as some sort of link farm / cloaking site?

I would agree that this is indeed a poor idea, a better idea may be to create some links between site A & B to pass link juice that way. You would loose some traffic and rather than have 1 good site and 1 needs some work site you would have two sites that need work.
I would suggest getting a landing page on site B start some basic SEO on that to give it a nudge prior to launch and give it some SEO focus with some links on site A pointing to relevant sections of site B.
Good luck!

Magento 1.9 SEO. I have product pages with identical On Page SEO score in the 90's. Some pull up Google page 1 some won't pull up at all. I am searching for the exact title on that page.
I have a website built on Magento 1.9. There are approximately 290,000 part numbers on the site. I am sampling Google SERP results. About 20% of the keywords show up on page 1 position 5 thru 10. 80% don't show up at all. When I do a MOZ page score I get high 80's to 90's. A page score of 89 on one part # may show up on page one, An identical page score on a different part # can't be found on Google. I am searching for the exact part # in the page title. Any thoughts on what may be going on? This seems to me like a Magento SEO issue.

Is there an advantage to using rel=canonical rather than noindex on pages on my mobile site (m.company.com)?
Is there an advantage to using link rel=alternate (as recommended by Google) rather than noindex on pages on my mobile site (m.company.com)? The content on the mobile pages is very similar to the content on the desktop site. I see Google recommends canonical and alternate tags, but what are the benefits of using those rather than noindex?

Should we 301 redirect old events pages on a website?
We have a client that has an events category section that is filled to the brim with past events webpages. Another issue is that these old events webpages all contain duplicate meta description tags, so we are concerned that Google might be penalizing our client's website for this issue. Our client does not want to create specialized meta description tags for these old events pages. Would it be a good idea to 301 redirect these old events landing pages to the main events category page to pass off link equity & remove the duplicate meta description tag issue? This seems drastic (we even noticed that searchmarketingexpo.com is keeping their old events pages). However it seems like these old events webpages offer little value to our website visitors. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Worth contributing articles to a Page Rank 1 site?
My intuition tells me that it is not going to help with any SEO link benefit by posting an article as a guest writer on a Page Rank site of #1. It's a rather new fashion content site. The article would be informative and not a sales pitch. The only link is to our url home page in the bio. I've been told that links from low page ranking sites don't help anymore. But maybe over time the site will achieve higher PR status, and then the link in it would help us? Any thoughts? Thanks! ron

Does Google only look at LSI per page or context of the Site?
From what I have read i should optimise each page for a keyword/phrase, however, I read recently that google may also look at the context of the site to see if there are other similar words. For example i have different pages optimised for Funeral Planning, funeral plans, funeral plan costs, compare funeral plans, why buy a funeral plan, paying for a funeral, prepaid funeral plans. Is this the best strategy when the words/phrases are so close or should i go for longer pages with the variations on one page or at least less pages? Thanks Ash

301 Redirect To Another 301 Redirect
Hi, We have a client with an old domain that they want to redirect to their primary domain. They also have a few older domains pointing to the old domain. Do you recommend leaving them as redirects that point to the old domain? This will create a redirect to a redirect situation. Or, is it better to go ahead and redirect those older domains to the primary one's, removing one layer of redirect? Thank you! Jessie

How to decide on which site to 301 redirect
Hi there I'd like your opinions please! My client currently has their website at not-very-good-url.it which has a really good link profile they also have duplicate sites at: much-better-brand-name-url.it and much-better-brand-name-url.com but both these other sites have only a handful of links in. How important do you think a better brand url is? And therefore do you think it would be better to 301 to a better brand URL and take the risk that the link profile will get hit? Or leave the main site where it is and 301 the other two to it? Many thanks

3 results for a site on page one?!?
Hi, I've never seen a website rank on page 1 in position 2, 3 and 4 for one query, completely separate results as well. I thought they limited the amount of results from a website on each page?
