How to remove trailing slashes in URLs using .htaccess (Apache)?
-
I want my URLs to look like these:
http://www.domain.com/buy/shoes
http://www.domain.com/buy/shoes/red
Thanks in advance!
-
I am sorry my friend. Somehow I missed your response.
It should have been: RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ /$1 [R,L]
So, you missed the /
And it is also used to remove the trailing slash from URLs just like the one that I gave you earlier.
Best,

And what is the difference of this to the one you've answered?
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ $1 [R,L] -
Thanks Devanur! Big help. By the way, I'm still looking for an opinion about this and I'm sure you can help me with this issue:http://moz.com/community/q/how-can-i-301-redirect-a-series-of-pages-ex-page-1-page-2-page-3-to-one-landing-page-new-url
-
Hi, here you go.....
RewriteRule ^(.)/(?.)?$ $1$2 [R=301,L]
Please note that the thing which looks like a capital V in the above rule is actually the backward slash and forward slash together.
Best,
Devanur Rafi

Client Wants To Use A .io Domain Name - How Bad For Organic?
Hi, I have a U.S. client who is stuck on a name that he wants to get as a .io (British Indian Ocean) domain name for a new site. Aside from the user confusion/weirdness, how much harder do you think this makes this sites organic in the U.S. in the future with a .io domain name? FYI, the other part of the domain name he wants to use is short, meaningless and implies nothing in and of itself. Thanks!

Changing url to recover from algorythmic penalty
Hello, If I think that a website was hit algorithmically, I would like to buy a new domain name and publish all the content from the first website there. I will take the first site down and this one would be the only one this content. Will Google see that it's the same content than a penalized website posted before and will penalize the new domain name even though it has 0 links pointing to it? Regards.

Is it still valuable to place content in subdirectories to represent hierarchy or is it better to have every URL off the root?
Is it still valuable to place content in subdirectories to represent hierarchy on the site or is it better to have every URL off the root? I have seen websites structured both ways. It seems having everything off the root would dilute the value associated with pages closest to the homepage. Also, from a user perspective, I see the value in a visual hierarchy in the URL.

Removing Unnatural Link Penalties
As soon as I began working in my current position at my current company I noticed my predecessor's tendency towards buying link packages from blackhat companies... I knew we were being penalized, and had to prove to him that we needed to halt those campaigns immediately and try our darndest to remove all poison links from the internet. I did convince him and began the process. There was 57% of our backlinks tied to the same anchor phrase with 836 domains linking to the same phrase, same page. Today there are 643 of those links remaining. So I have hit a large number of them, but not nearly enough. So now I am getting messages from Google announcing that our site has been hit with an unnatural link penalty. I haven't really seen the results of this yet in the keywords I am trying to rank for, but fear it will hurt very soon and know that I could be doing better in the meantime. I really don't know what to do next. I've tried the whole "contact the webmasters" technique and maybe have had 1/100 agree to remove our links. They all want money or don't respond.. Do I really need to use this Disavow tool?

Competitor is using a blog network - worth reporting?
Hey guys, Today I checked the backlink profile of a competitor who is #1 in Google Australia for a highly competitive keyword. To my surprise though, every single link (except a few directory link) seems to be from a private blog network. It's a business selling advertisment products, yet somehow seems to have links on blog from website that sell pc repair services, sleepwear, bali villas rentals, etc.. In this case, would filing a spam report in google WMT be beneficial? It's not like they advertise that they sell links (nor are the websites the links are on), but it is quite clear that something dodgy is going on. Thanks
