Is My Boilerplate Product Description Causing Duplicate Content Issues?
-
I have an e-commerce store with 20,000+ one-of-a-kind products. We only have one of each product, and once a product is sold we will never restock it. So I really have no intention to have these product pages showing up in SERPs. Each product has a boilerplate description that the product's unique attributes (style, color, size) are plugged into. But a few sentences of the description are exactly the same across all products.
Google Webmaster Tools doesn't report any duplicate content. My Moz Crawl Report show 29 of these products as having duplicate content. But a Google search using the site operator and some text from the boilerplate description turns up 16,400 product pages from my site.
Could this duplicate content be hurting my SERPs for other pages on the site that I am trying to rank? As I said, I'm not concerned about ranking for these products pages. Should I make them "rel=canonical" to their respective product categories? Or use "noindex, follow" on every product? Or should I not worry about it?

My SERPs for a competitive term I felt I underperforming for dropped about 10 spots overnight after I added "noindex, follow" to the product pages. From the 3rd page to the 4th page, so it's not like I had a lot to lose. My SERPs for less competitive long tail keywords, which is where I'm getting most of my traffic, have dropped slightly or stayed the same.
Should I cross my fingers and hope for a recovery? Revert the product pages back to "index, follow"? Any thoughts?

Hi Tom,
Thanks so much for the thorough response.
Based on several comparative metrics with sites that are outranking me significantly, I do feel the site is underperforming. Because our traffic is ridiculously seasonal the Panguin Tool doesn't provide any clues.
I just added to all my products using Yoast's Wordpress SEO plugin. We'll see what happens.
Thanks,

Hi Zachary
I really can't be sure if it's having an adverse affect, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
Having looked at just 3 of the product pages, there is a problem with content being repeated, but I think it is being compounded by there being no other content on the page either to make it look unique.
Both are the hallmarks to a potential Panda penalty, which could affect the pages performance themselves and/or the whole domain. So, if you're seeing subpar performance (and even if you're performing well it's worth reading on) I would look at the following solution.
For every product that you do not intend to restock or reuse, I would either add a tag, add a 301 redirect or simply remove the page and serve a 404. If we're talking tens of thousands, then having that many redirects might bloat out your .htaccess file (making it larger and longer to load/process) and having an instant drop of 20k URLs and 404 errors might look a bit odd to Google as well. However, adding 20k tags is a bit of a nightmare as well.
You might want to try a combination of all 3 - a few 404 errors is nothing to worry about - but the logic is that you will be removing a number of pages that have this duplicate content on it, thus improving the quality of the domain. For your remaining 'live' pages, I'd highly recommend taking the time to add 200+ words of unique content about the product in order to avoid this happening again.
An alternative solution would be to block the bots from accessing the /shop/ subfolder in your robots.txt file - and then setting up the shop and the currently active product listings on a different subdomain. You'd lose the ability to use the /shop/ folder, but it would be quicker than manually adding tags or 301 redirects.
That's the method I would use if I wanted to address the issue. However, this **may not be necessary **if your site is not performing badly. You can check this to a degree with the Panguin Tool - this overlays your organic traffic in analytics with Google updates - if a drop in traffic coincides with a Panda penalty, you may be under the affect of one - in which case you should take action ASAP.
Hope this helps.

Hi Zachery
29 pages showing up in your Moz crawl report out of 16,400 indexed pages on your site is such a small percentage (0.18% to be accurate) it is not worth worrying about. Also, if GWT is not reporting any issues I think you should be fine.
Don't worry, be happy!
Peter

Is this duplicate content that I should be worried about?
Our product descriptions appear in two places and on one page they appear twice. The best way to illustrate that would be to link you to a search results page that features one product. My duplicate content concern refers to the following, When the customer clicks the product a pop-up is displayed that features the product description (first showing of content) When the customer clicks the 'VIEW PRODUCT' button the product description is shown below the buy buytton (second showing of content), this is to do with the template of the page and is why it is also shown in the pop-up. This product description is then also repeated further down in the tabs (third showing of content). My thoughts are that point 1 doesn't matter as the content isn't being shown from a dedicated URL and it relies on javascript. With regards to point 2, is the fact the same paragraph appears on the page twice a massive issue and a duplicate content problem? Thanks

Duplicate content - working with CMS constraints
Hi, We use an industry-specific CMS and I'm struggling to figure out how we can fix duplicate content issues. Thankfully, the vendor has agreed to work on 301 vs 302 redirects. However, they aren't currently able to give us the ability to add rel=canonical tags to page headers (we've put it in their "suggestion box" which tends to take a long time, if ever, to materialize). My understanding is that the tag will not be recognized if it's in the body code, correct? (aka the part of the page we can edit from the CMS) Is there anything else I can do?

Duplicate Content of Reseller Product?
There is a particular product/service that I resell through an API. There are quite a few of them and each one requires a lot of content. The company provides web content for each product but I'm wondering about the SEO implications of using it? Obviously using the content, it will not be unique so I won't be able to rank (easily at least) for these products. Are there any _negative_results that I can get from using this content though? If I simply won't rank for those products it's not an issue since I get traffic elsewhere. Thanks!

Content Duplication and Canonical Tag settings
Hi all, I have a question regarding content duplication. My site has posted one fresh content in the article section and set canonical in the same page for avoiding content duplication._But another webmaster has taken my post and posted the same in his site with canonical as his site url. They have not given to original source as well._May I know how Google will consider these two pages. Which site will be affected with content duplication by Google and how can I solve this issue? If two sites put canonical tags in there own pages for the same content how the search engine will find the original site which posted fresh content. How can we avoid content duplication in this case?

Wordpress categories causing too many links/duplicate content?
I've just added categories to my wordpress site and some of the posts show in several of the categories. Will this cause me duplicate content problems as I want the category pages to be indexed? Also as I add more categories I'm creating more links on the page. They can't be seen to the user as I have a plugin that creates drop down categories. When I go to 'view source' though all the links are there so google will see lots of links. How can I fix the too many links problem? And should I worry about duplicate content issue?

Duplicate Content on SEO Pages
I'm trying to create a bunch of content pages, and I want to know if the shortcut I took is going to penalize me for duplicate content. Some background: we are an airport ground transportation search engine(www.mozio.com), and we constructed several airport transportation pages with the providers in a particular area listed. However, the problem is, sometimes in a certain region multiple of the same providers serve the same places. For instance, NYAS serves both JFK and LGA, and obviously SuperShuttle serves ~200 airports. So this means for every airport's page, they have the super shuttle box. All the provider info is stored in a database with tags for the airports they serve, and then we dynamically create the page. A good example follows: http://www.mozio.com/lga_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/jfk_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/ewr_airport_transportation/ All 3 of those pages have a lot in common. Now, I'm not sure, but they started out working decently, but as I added more and more pages the efficacy of them went down on the whole. Is what I've done qualify as "duplicate content", and would I be better off getting rid of some of the pages or somehow consolidating the info into a master page? Thanks!

How can i see the pages that cause duplicate content?
SEOmoz PRO is giving me back duplicate content errors. However, i don't see how i can get a list of pages that are duplicate to the one shown. If i don't know which pages/urls cause the issue i can't really fix it. The only way would be placing canonical tags but that's not always the best solution. Is there a way to see the actual duplicate pages?

Duplicate Content Issue within the Categories Area
We are in the process of building out a new website, it has been built in Drupal. Within the scan report from SEOMOZ Crawl Diagnostics and it look like I have a duplicate content issue. Example: We sell Vinyl Banners so we have many different templates one can use from within our Online Banner Builder Tool. We have broken them down via categories: Issue: Duplicate Page Content /categories/activities has 9 other URLS associated this issue, I have many others but this one will work for an example. Within this category we have multiple templates attached to this page. Each of the templates do not need their own page however we use this to pull the templates into one page onto the activities landing page. I am wondering if I need to nofollow, noindex each of those individule templates and just get the main top level category name indexed. Or is there a better way to do this to minimize the impact of Panda?
