Fantastic engagement - poor rankings
-
Hi all,
I've got a website that, for the life of me, I just can't get to rank highly: mariart.com.au
Our DA/PA is higher than many of our competitors, and the engagement is amongst the best I've seen (7624 unique visits with: Pages p/visit = 7.28, Bounce rate = 5.26%, though Avg duration is only 2:36).
Have I missed something fundamental here?
Thanks!!

How have you gotten your links so far? The strongest ones I see are very exact match looking, on homepages, and therefore I am wondering if they are paid links or other business deals.

Hello.
The first thing that stands out for me is, what are you trying to get rankings for? Are they the right mix of high traffic driving terms vs. low competition. If you aren't targeting the right terms then it doesn't matter that competitors are ranking higher (quality). Also, are you using a ranking tool or a non-personalised search when determining if competitors are ranking higher?
If you are happy with your keyword targets I'd be looking at how traffic is arriving to your website. 7624 visits will be made up of other non-keyword ranking related traffic such as direct traffic, social, referral traffic etc. A nice way to do this is to work out the percentage split between each medium. If you find that your organic traffic is low then you need to review your website to ensure that all basic SEO practices have been completed - this is a must!
Then I'd look at the search queries that are driving traffic to your website and determine the split between brand and non-brand keywords. You can use Google Webmaster Tools or Google Analytics. But please note that Google (as of about August 2013) have started to report less on this data, so you need to get in and grab the historical information now. I'd focus mostly on non-brand keywords as these are the visitors that you are winning off competitors. Once you have this information you can see impressions and clicks, this will allow you to see if searchers are being served your target keywords and which are being clicked (perhaps you need to revise your keyword targets). It will also show you keyword opportunities - what keywords are Google serving your website up for that get no clicks, perhaps these would be better targets.
Good luck!

Duplicate content. Competing for rank.
Scenario: An automotive dealer lists cars for sale on their website. The descriptions are very good and in depth at 1,200 words per car. However chunks of the copy are copied from car review websites and weaved into their original copy. Q1: This is flagged in copyscape - how much of an issue is this for Google? Q2: The same stock with the same copy is fed into a popular car listing website - the dealer's website and the classifieds website often rank in the top two positions (sometimes the dealer on top other times the classifieds site). Is this a good or a bad thing? Are you risking being seen as duplicating/scraping content? Thank you.

Ranking in SERPs but not using terms on website.
As far as I know, it's not normally possible for a website to rank for a keyword that is not mentioned on the website. I have seen a website that ranks very well for key terms and yet they are not mentioned anywhere on the website, I have run advanced search & checked using tools including cloak checker on my findings. How can this be?

My website is not ranking for primary keywords in Google
I need help regarding some SEO strategy that need to be implemented to my website http://goo.gl/AiOgu1 . My website is a leading live chat product, daily it receives around 2000 unique visitors. Initially the website was impacted by manual link penalty, I cleaned up lot of backlinks, the website revoked from the penalty some where around June'14. Most of the secondary and longtail Keywords started ranking in Google, but unfortunately, it do not rank well for the primary keywords like (live chat, live chat software, helpdesk etc). Since I have done lot of onsite changes and even revamped the content but till now I dont find any improvement. I am unable to understand where I have got structed.

My website was on first page google couple of months ago, now nothing. Shows up in Bing page one. Some queries/pages still showing OK, but some not at all. Example "residential elevators illinois" found nowhere. http://www.accesselevator.net is the website. Have found 900 poor quality links and used disavow tool. Any further suggestions? Their Page Rank also went from a 3 to a 2. Implemented nofollow on all outgoing links. Need advice.

Wrong page getting ranked
Hi all, we have product category pages on our ecommerce web site and we also produce blog content (such as buyers guides, setup guides etc) to help with ranking and give our site some good quality, unique content. However we are sometimes finding that the buyers guide / blog content gets ranked by Google over our product category page. I'm hoping, if I give an example or two, some one smart out there may be able to point me in the right direction as to how we can avoid this and get the product category page ranked instead? You will see from my examples we are linking internally using the keywords from the buyers guides to the product category pages in order to show the most important page to Google for these keywords and are trying to structure the product category pages as well as possible to make it the most optimized page for the term. Example: Keyword "twin dvd player"... product category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/dvd/portable-dvd-player-car/twin-dvd-player/ ... blog page actually getting ranked for this keyword: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/advice-center/dual-screen-and-twin-dvd-player-explained/ Keyword "site radio".... product category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/audio/radio/site-radio/ .... blog buyer guide page actually getting ranked for keyword: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/advice-center/Site-radio-buying-guide/ Any help / pointers appreciated. Thanks.

Rankings improvement strategy
I am working on my SEO strategies and though it would be good to get advice from awesome members: Our current rankings are on (Google United States) page 5. Our keywords have high competition and hence we need to follow tight plan. I want to learn some best strategies to get Page 1 rankings and how much time would be required approximately. (though I know its weird to ask for time in SEO but what I mean is some case studies or examples of how long you waited when you have pushed your website from page 5 to page 1) What rank maintenance strategies you follow in general. Does anyone have used any agency for rank maintenance for their niche.

The ranking power of exact match domains
I've read previous Q&A where people have been a bit dismissive of the ranking significance of exact match domains but my experience recently using the keyword competiveness tool is that exact match domains seem to outrank other sites regardless of domain or page authority or other on-site/on-page optimisation. I'm interested in other people's opinions and experiences.
