Will getting backlinks to landing page from low quality sites negatively affect SEO?
-
I've recently started an initiative at my company to get our customers to publish a blog post about our company and to include a link to a landing page which sits on a subdomain attached to our main domain. The reason for directing visitors to the post to a landing page is to help with conversion.
I've recently been thinking that couldn't the backlinks to this landing page from our customers' blogs (generally small sites) have a negative impact on the overall SEO of my companies domain?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice Kurt and I'll make sure to be careful. It doesn't look like we will invest too much more in this strategy as it is quite resource intensive.

Thanks Dennis. I have a close relationship with these customers so I make sure the anchor text is fine. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help George. We aren't buying these links, just speaking to our customers and trying to convince them to write about their use of our service. I think we will be fine.

I would differentiate between low quality sites and small sites without much authority (yet). When I hear low quality, I think of a spammy site that doesn't have quality, original content. There are plenty of small blogs out there which aren't extremely popular, but do put out quality, original content. Getting links from small sites that produce decent content is perfectly fine. Getting links from a bunch of spammy sites, could eventually hurt you.
As to your strategy, you'll want to be careful. If you are offering incentives for people to post about your site, those links are technically considered paid links and are unnatural. According to the Google guidelines, those links should be nofollow. If they aren't and you are trying to gain link authority through these posts, you're playing a game of whether your way of buying links is something Google will be able to figure out (or your competitors will report). If Google does figure it out, those links may be devalued and your site could be penalized. Just be aware of the risks.
If you just want people posting about your site and sending traffic, then ask them to nofollow the links when they publish the posts and you'll be within Google guidelines.

Definitely not something Id be worried about, as long as you set the proper rules and restrictions on what they can post/how long it is/how they link
Main thing I'd worry about is anchor text so just set proper choices for them.

Hi Justin,
Personally I think you'll be fine as you've described the initiative working. Google doesn't expect every link to a website to be from a high authority, otherwise it would look unnatural. In reality, there will be a mix of high and low authority pages/domains that link to every website. However, if the blog posts are being spun out on blog networks, or if your customers sites have been penalised by Google then it probably isn't going to help you much.
What isn't clear is whether you're effectively buying these links, and whether they will pass PageRank or not. I encourage you to read Google's guidelines on this: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en.

SEO problems from moving from several pages to one accordian
Ive read other posts that say using accordion is not detrimental to SEO, and for conversion optimization we want to take several of our existing pages and make them into one accordion. But what will this do to seo and duplicate content as I redirect the old pages to anchors in the accordion? I would think this would be a dup content problem as www.oldinfo1 www.oldinfo2 will now have their content on the same page but I will be redirecting them to www.newpage#oldinfo1 www.newpage#oldinfo2 Is there a way around duplicate content problems?

Onsite SEO Strategy for a large accommodation site
Hi All I have been thinking about the best strategy for keyword optimisation on a forthcoming accommodation website I am involved with. This may be a bit of a newbie type question, but most of my work has been on considerably smaller sites to date.... Lets say the site will have 1 primary landing page for "Hotels in Bristol" and then 50 pages that are each for a hotel in Bristol. The aim would be for the primary page which will be a browse/search result type page to rank well for the term 'Hotels in Bristol' and other similar terms. If each of the hotel listing pages that have a hotel in Bristol on, have the phrase 'Hotel in Bristol' contained within the title, url, page content, maybe headings/alt tags etc. will the result be that the rank for the site is 'spread too thin' across the domain? Whats the best way to drive all the relevancy and keyword usage on the 50 listing pages, to the primary page such that that is the one that ranks well? And the other pages rank more for the hotel name etc? I guess one way would be to avoid using the words hotels and Bristol in the title/URL etc.. but the natural approach for usability (not SEO) would be to use these words i.e. http://www.newtravelsite.com/hotels/bristol/stgeorgeshotel/ Or would each of the 50 listing pages simply need a followed, anchored link pointing the main landing page? I'm sure there may be a fundamental technique to do this that has alluded me so far, but any help, thoughts or guidance much appreciated! Regards Simon

How to get Google to index another page
Hi, I will try to make my question clear, although it is a bit complex. For my site the most important keyword is "Insurance" or at least the danish variation of this. My problem is that Google are'nt indexing my frontpage on this, but are indexing a subpage - www.mydomain.dk/insurance instead of www.mydomain.dk. My link bulding will be to subpages and to my main domain, but i wont be able to get that many links to www.mydomain.dk/insurance. So im interested in making my frontpage the page that is my main page for the keyword insurance, but without just blowing the traffic im getting from the subpage at the moment. Is there any solutions to do this? Thanks in advance.

Same page from different locations has slight different URL, is it a negative SEO practice?
Hi, Recently we made change in our website link generation logic, and now I can reach the same page from different pages with slightly different URLs like this: http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=wlZJNya&by=Featured_ShowMe and http://www.showme.com/sh/?h=wlZJNya&by=Topic Just wondering is this a bad practice and should we avoid it? Thank you, Karen

Some backlinks not getting picked up by OSE -- confused to why
I've had what has ended up being a nightmare SEO campaign. We have sunk a ton of time into link building for the site and saw little to no traction. Just as a test, I have the site on our portfolio as a site we designed years ago. The link to the site is old. Somehow, this link does not show up on OSE, and it seems to get no credit. http://www.happydogwebproductions.com/item/spine-and-sports.html The backlink, and troubled campaign is www.spineandsportschiro.com There should be a few more links too that aren't getting picked up, especially the ones I have noticed using Whitespark local citation tool. Has Google got picky with all of this? How come this site seems to be getting no credit?

Do sites really need a 404 page?
We have people posting broken links to our site is this looking us link juice as they link to 404 pages. We could redirect to the homepage or just render the home page content, in both cases we can still display a clear page not found message. Is this legal (white hat).
