What's the Best Host For WordPress sites
-
Our site has gone down twice in a week...hosted by Fat Cow. So we're going to switch hosts this week.
We currently have 2 WP sites on a Fat Cow VPS. 8 GB file size and 2 GB data transfer monthly. We use a CDN and video hosting company (Wistia) so the file sizes are small. I've contacted several hosts and narrowed it down to WP Engine, Rack Space and A Small Orange.
I care about fast page load time (1 second), 99.999% up-time and great support. Price is a secondary concern.
I'm leaning towards WP Engine, but wanted to ask Moz community before making a decision. Any other hosting companies I should call?
-
I've set up WP sites on both A Small Orange and WP Engine. I like them both a lot, but WP Engine is my favorite. The extra cost is recouped in time not spent doing constant backups, installing updates, jumping through hoops to set up redirects, etc.

Branden,
My company has spent a lot of time evaluating different hosting companies. We finally settled on these guys: http://pressable.com/
Here are the reasons we selected them:
-
Really easy to use interface for the developers as well as good backup/restoration tools
-
automatic patch updates and testing
-
Quick support response
-
Extensive f5 load balancing network through Rackmount to improve performance
-
Rackmount is physical back end so there is easy integration with any of Rackmount's higher end hosted database services etc,, if needed.
We are still in progress but we are moving all of our clients sites to this platform. We have been with them as our primary provider for about a year.

My two suggestions for a WordPress specific site would be WP Engine or Pagely.
Pagely is a smaller company, but they have excellent speed, uptime, and service. They also have a deal going on right now for "Cyber Monday": http://blog.pagely.com/2013/12/cyber-monday-12-days-pagely/
You can't go wrong with either WP Engine or Pagely.

I have about 30 sites hosted at Heart Internet and never have any issues.
I have some on shared hosting VPS packages and I have some on VPS and Dedicated.
Even on the hosting packages you can have things like custom php.ini
Plus there are no bandwidth restrictions.Check their site out all the information is there.
TOP TIP
Sign up for the hosting reseller package as it allows you to manage unlimited domains for one price and discounts on VPS and dedicated.Goof luck

Is it necessary to use Google's Structured Data Markup or alternative for my B2B site?
Hi, We are in the process of going through a re-design for our site. Am trying to understand if we need to use some sort of structured data either from Google Structured data or schema. org?

Should I Add Location to ALL of My Client's URLs?
Hi Mozzers, My first Moz post! Yay! I'm excited to join the squad 🙂 My client is a full service entertainment company serving the Washington DC Metro area (DC, MD & VA) and offers a host of services for those wishing to throw events/parties. Think DJs for weddings, cool photo booths, ballroom lighting etc. I'm wondering what the right URL structure should be. I've noticed that some of our competitors do put DC area keywords in their URLs, but with the moves of SERPs to focus a lot more on quality over keyword density, I'm wondering if we should focus on location based keywords in traditional areas on page (e.g. title tags, headers, metas, content etc) instead of having keywords in the URLs alongside the traditional areas I just mentioned. So, on every product related page should we do something like: example.com/weddings/planners-washington-dc-md-va

example.com/weddings/djs-washington-dc-md-va
example.com/weddings/ballroom-lighting-washington-dc-md-va OR example.com/weddings/planners
example.com/weddings/djs
example.com/weddings/ballroom-lighting In both cases, we'd put the necessary location based keywords in the proper places on-page. If we follow the location-in-URL tactic, we'd use DC area terms in all subsequent product page URLs as well. Essentially, every page outside of the home page would have a location in it. Thoughts? Thank you!!0 -
Why my site it's not being indexed?
Hello.... I got to tell that I feel like a newbie (I am, but know I feel like it)... We were working with a client until january this year, they kept going on their own until september that they contacted us again... Someone on the team that handled things while we were gone, updated it´s robots.txt file to Disallow everything... for maybe 3 weeks before we were back in.... Additionally they were working on a different subdomain, the new version of the site and of course the didn't block the robots on that one. So now the whole site it's been duplicated, even it´s content, the exact same pages exist on the suddomain that was public the same time the other one was blocked. We came in changes the robots.txt file on both server, resend all the sitemaps, sent our URL on google+... everything the book says... but the site it´s not getting indexed. It's been 5 weeks now and no response what so ever. We were highly positioned on several important keywords and now it's gone. I now you guys can help, any advice will be highly appreciated. thanks Dan

How to best serve images optimised for mobile devices in WordPress
Issue: Images too large for mobile devices in some articles, cannot be shrunk responsively, also should help reduce page size/improve site speed on small screen devices. I am thinking of switching depending on the user-agent, such as iPhone / Android devices and serving up an optimised, rediced size image. I envisage this working in the background / ie. hidden from authors so it is easy. Platform: WordPress Would like a solution or some feedback on people's experiences with this problem. No good plugins found that can handle this so would probably need to be custom coded, but no processing overhead, unless it is generated upon publication of article. Thanks peeps Keith H

Switch hosting to be closer to site visitors, and 99% dropped from rankings?
Last week I decided to switch for a UK server to a US one at Hostgator since most of my visitors are from the US. About nine hours later 99% of my pages disappeared from google rankings, only a few non-relevant pages are at position 100-200. All decent (1000-2000 word) articles on specific topics, are gone. These pages were getting 2-3 minutes per user of readership and a low bounce rate, so I think they were pretty good quality. Does anyone think it's possible I got accidentally added on a blacklisted IP? Or why would something like this happen. Since then, I've tried switching back to the old IP for 3 days, that didn't work. Now I've filed a reinclusion request with the details. Has anyone had a similar experience? What can possibly cause this massive drop in rankings and traffic? Any help is much appreciated!

Our Site's Content on a Third Party Site--Best Practices?
One of our clients wants to use about 200 of our articles on their site, and they're hoping to get some SEO benefit from using this content. I know standard best practices is to canonicalize their pages to our pages, but then they wouldn't get any benefit--since a canonical tag will effectively de-index the content from their site. Our thoughts so far: add a paragraph of original content to our content link to our site as the original source (to help mitigate the risk of our site getting hit by any penalties) What are your thoughts on this? Do you think adding a paragraph of original content will matter much? Do you think our site will be free of penalty since we were the first place to publish the content and there will be a link back to our site? They are really pushing for not using a canonical--so this isn't an option. What would you do?

If you host a video on another site will you get credit for it?
If we host the video on a third party player & use their player (such as Brightcove), will we get credit for the video (will it show in SERPs on our domain? Or, do we need to host it on our own site?
