Enormous 7 page drop after switching servers and adding load balancers. Thoughts?
-
Hello Everyone,
I'm a longtime Moz user but I had to switch accounts after switching jobs. I was hoping someone might be able to give me some insight on whats going on if possible. Our startup had first page position for our most valuable keyword: "Crowdfunding real estate" for about 6 or 7 months. Once we launched and switched to a production server behind load balancers, we dropped almost overnight to 7th page and we've been there for about a month. We don't have many links yet and some of the ones we DO have are kind of spammy (no idea where they came from and in process of trying to get them removed) but we thought it'd be strange to see that massive drop. We are even pages below a competitor who has NO links and basically zero content on the page. We don't have any notifications in WMT about a manual penalty or anything. I'd really, really appreciate any advice and If anyone has any ideas, the page is at: PatchofLand.com
Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason
I wouldnt think the duplicate content is the issue, especially assuming the main keyphrase you are after had the homepage ranking for it (which doesnt have the dup issue) right? Moz is not showing you anywhere near as many links to the domain as ahrefs is, I would look at GWT also and have a good look through all your backlinks, at first glance there seems to be a chunk of obvious spam/seo type links in your profile that might be a more likely cause of the trouble. If you are not getting any more of those and have a marketing plan in place then it might just be a matter of keep doing what you are doing and you will start ranking again. But you will want to make sure you know where those dodgy links came from and that you are not going to be getting many more.

Hi Jacob and Lynn,
Thank you for the responses. The servers are based in the same country, and Lynn I think I agree with you that it might be a red herring. One thing I noticed just yesterday (while using MOZ's crawl results btw) is that each new property / product we launch has two pages. Our system creates a page using the identical content and identical page title under the root domain and under /investments. For example:
http://patchofland.com/investments/single-family-rehab-in-new-jersey.html
and
http://patchofland.com/single-family-rehab-in-new-jersey.html
Could it be that we are such a new site, with such few links, that a duplicate content penalty like that on a significant percentage of our pages could cause us to drop that far?
Thank you again!
Jason

Hi Jason,
Might be the server setup change is a red herring, such a drastic change so quickly sounds odd. Have you checked the dates against known google updates? NOV 14 comes to mind given the time frame you mentioned. A look at ahrefs shows some swings in linking domains in the last 2-3 months and a chunk of them look a somewhat iffy...

Home page vs inner page?
do you believe that the advantage of targeting a search term on the home page is now worse off than before? as I understand it ctr is a big factor now And as far as i can see if two pages are equal on page etc the better ctr will win out, the issue with the home page is the serp stars cannot be used hence the ctr on a product page will be higher? I feel if you where able to get a home page up quicker (1 year instead of two) you still lost out in the end due to the product page winning on ctr? do you think this is correct?

What to do with Authoritative footer pages?
Alo everyone! The site I'm working on has had a homepage that essentially used the footer as the main form of navigation on the site and the PA of each of those pages reflects that. I'm helping them re-organize the site (I'm still a noob though), and was curious for some input on this particular situation. Some of the most authoritative pages are: 1. www.charged.fm/privacy - PA 29 2. www.charged.fm/terms - PA 29 My question: Is this just a consequence of previous mistakes that we live with, or is there something involving 301's and creation of new pages that could help us utilize the link juice on these pages. Or should we come up with ways to internally link to 'money' pages from these pages instead? Thanks for any input, Luke

How would Google reach internal pages on Zales with Lazy Load?
Hi, I encountered the following page on Zales:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | BeytzNet
http://engagementring.theprestigediamondcollection.com/NewEngagementRing/NewEring.aspx As you scroll down more items pop up (the well known Pinterest style).
Would Google bot be able to enter the product pages? I don't assume the bot "scrolls"... Thanks0 -
Why does my home page show up in search results instead of my target page for a specific keyword?
I am using Wordpress and am targeting a specific keyword..and am using Yoast SEO if that question comes up.. and I am at 100% as far as what they recommend for on page optimization. The target html page is a "POST" and not a "Page" using Wordpress definitions. Also, I am using this Pinterest style theme here http://pinclone.net/demo/ - which makes the post a sort of "pop-up" - but I started with a different theme and the results below were always the case..so I don't know if that is a factor or not. (I promise .. this is not a clever spammy attempt to promote their theme - in fact parts of it don't even work for me yet so I would not recommend it just yet...) I DO show up on the first page for my keyword.. however.. instead of Google showing the page www.mywebsite.com/this-is-my-targeted-keyword-page.htm Google shows www.mywebsite.com in the results instead. The problem being - if the traffic goes only to my home page.. they will be less likely to stay if they dont find what they want immediately and have to search for it.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Page Rank
Hi guys I have an ecommerce in prestashop (unfortunatelly I can not change it at this moment). I made all main activities both off and on the page. And actually it is working pretty well since I am up on the SERP for all the target keywords. BUT, the page rank still be 0. The site is about 2 years old. My main competitor has the same domain authority than mine, but he has a page rank > 0 Moreover I have more quality links then it has, but it is older Any suggestions? Many thanks Ciao Diego

What causes internal pages to have a page rank of 0 if the home page is PR 5?
The home page PageRank is 5 but every single internal page is PR 0. Things I know I need to address each page has 300 links (Menu problem). Each article has 2-3 duplicates caused from the CMS working on this now. Has anyone else had this problem before? What things should I look out for to fix this issue. All internal linking is follow there is no page rank sculpting happening on the pages.

Should the sitemap include just menu pages or all pages site wide?
I have a Drupal site that utilizes Solr, with 10 menu pages and about 4,000 pages of content. Redoing a few things and we'll need to revamp the sitemap. Typically I'd jam all pages into a single sitemap and that's it, but post-Panda, should I do anything different?
