Is domain age no longer a factor?
-
Most of you have already seen the Matt Cutts video saying that domain age is insignificant after a few months. Do people agree with that? I have a friend who has a domain that is over 12 years old, but the name is not great. gaport.com for a business that sells primarily carports and garages. After watching this video, he wants to rebrand his site with a new name and scrap the old domain for something more marketable. Before he does this, I'd like to know if domain age really isn't a factor anymore?
Thanks,
Ruben

“Overall Domain, age does play a role, but a small role & it’s not a very strong ranking factor as compared to others.
The main Problem associated with buying Old Domains is you have to find out with what it was associated before?
Even best SEO Experts have failed to get a spam free domain in one go
Because domains that get Expired might have been used in past for the purposes of Gambling, Spamming, Illegal Content, Adult Websites etc.
We have written a post in detail on this topic, whether Domain Age is an SEO Factor or not?

if we talk about a domain by itself it is not a privilage to have an old one. Your domain is listed in dmoz and yahoo directories and has more other backlinks. And those backlinks are more valuable then the exact age.

Although domain name age might not be important, other aspects of a mature domain could give support to rankings.
I redirected a domain that held #1 rankings for a commercial keyword unchallenged for ten consecutive years. This was a domain, popular in its niche, that was getting over 500,000 pageviews per month.
Changing the domain resulted in the loss of over 1000 people per month arriving at the site through domain queries typed into the google search box, lots of direct visitors from the domain typed in browser address bar, probably lots of people clicking its entries in the SERPs because of domain recognition, loss of huge sitelinks.
Once you switch the domain all of that tribe support - measurable by Google - disappears. BAM!
After 301 redirecting the site dropped immediately in the SERPs, recovered quickly to #2 and then retook #1 after domain queries were back up over 1000 per month. - but that took many months and lots of lost sales for the former level of tribe support to reestablish on the new domain.
It currently is at #3 with a couple big brands above it. Revenue is down.
I can't say if it would still be holding off those big brands - because Google seems to be giving them strong favor these days - but if I could go back a couple years, I might not have changed the domain.

It sounds like the consensus of the coverage on Matt Cutt's statements show that:
- Google still uses domain name age as a factor, but it sounds like it's not nearly as important as unique, high-quality content, and other trust signals such as external links.
- Google does pay attention to domain name age, especially during the first 2-3 months of a domain's lifetime.
I still think domain name age is a factor for how pages rank, as Google still does like pages that "have withstood the test of time." (Google also likes fresh new content, too.)
My hunch is that your friend would take a short-term hit on traffic, and in order to get the site to rank well, the site will need to focus on a high-quality user experience, great content, etc.
I could perhaps see an interesting section on the site devoted to the best (or worst) garages and carports.

Sub-domain with spammy content and links: Any impact on main website rankings?
Hi all, One of our sub-domains is forums. Our users will be discussing about our product and many related things. But some of the users in forum are adding a lot of spammy content everyday. I just wonder whether this scenario is ruining our ranking efforts of main website? A sub domain with spammy content really kills the ranking of main website? Thanks

Google sets brand/domain name at the end of SERP titles
Hi all, I am experiencing that Google puts our domain name at the end of the titles in SERPs. So if ia have a title: "See our super cool website", Google would show "See our super cool website - Betxpert.com" in the SERPs Well. This is okay. Apart from the fact that i myself often put the brand name in the title AND the fact that Google mispells the site name. The brand is BetXpert with a upper case X...so when i get a SERP with "See our super cool website - BetXpert - Betxpert.com" I am annoyed 🙂 Any one out the know how to tell Google the EXACT brand name, such that they do not set a value the site owner does not want to have? -Rasmus

Domain Authority Just Wont Budge
I've put off asking this question for a long time because I know what the short answer is, but I've been working the SEO on http://www.photojennette.com for almost a year now pretty constantly and all of the measurements are positives except for authority. Traffic has more than doubled, links sending visits has doubled, external followed links is 500% up, keywords sending is way up, pages within the site have way more links and are more diverse in their own SEO, but no matter what I can't get PA and DA to budge. In fact at one point DA dropped a point or two. (although OSE and Moz Analytics shown that competitors lost a point or two at the same time so I didn't think much of it.) I feel like I had a good grasp on what helps DA but I'm starting to question that. Anyone have any ideas?

SEO ranking factors
Hello I am reading SEO ranking factor (very good informations) and I want to ask: what does it mean: of linking C bloks to page I think that: how many(#) links from the same server (C block) links to your homepage or some pages of your web... of linking IP adresses to page how many web links are going to my web and every links are from another server. if I understand it good, it is no different between, if you have links from webpages in one server (one C block) or from webpages on another servers as your web is, because both correlation is 0.25... THX Could anybody expalin me, what does it mean: # of External Links w/ Partial Match Anchor Text http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors#metrics-5 The number of external links and all these external links contain partial match anchor text from my query: (I am finding in Google "tennis" and see in SERP domain www.usta.com. # of External Links w/ Partial Match Anchor Text: tells me the number how many external links contain partial match anchor text "play tennis, tennis school, tennis info..."? )

Does Google do domain level topic modeling? If so, are off-site factors such as search traffic volume taken into account?
80% of my site's organic traffic is coming through a resource that is only somewhat related. Does Google think the main topic of my site is terms this resource targets thus bumping the terms I care about to a sub-topic level of sorts? If this is the case, would putting the resource information into a sub-domain help to solve the problem?

.Co Domains - Any thoughts?
Hi Guys I'm not sure which section this one belongs in as I didn't see a section for domains/tlds. I wanted an opinion on the future of .co domains. We own a gift company (www.xperiencedays.com), as well as a gift recommendation site (www.uniquegifts.net), and invested in a few gift occasion .co domains (www.birthdaygifts.co, christmasgifts.co etc). This was partly because they were cheap and easy to come by, but also with a hope that they soon gain some public recognition. My question therefore is whether anyone within SEOMOZ has an opinion on whether .co will be widely accepted, whether they will (as google claims) be treated as a non-country specific url, and early success stories you know of, and finally whether the recent news from Overstock to rebrand as O.co (http://www.overstock.com/guides/faqs-about-o-co) is the kick start that .co need. I realize that is more than one question
