Keyword stuffing in
-
Having a discussion with my boss over whether the following page is over-saturated (stuffed) with keywords in the element: http://www.godreamvacations.com/BarceloHotels -- We implemented the description and keyword tag text back in 2010 when the boss gave me the text. Anyone have any good responses to the bosses' response (below)?
"These are the ones (pages) that are actually working wonderfully well on Bing. At the time, I researched the optimal number of characters and tried to really follow all that was suggested by SEO experts. As far as the keywords, I would say you could remove the ones without the “s”, for example, take out “Barcelo Hotel” and leave “Barcelo Hotels” I think this is all relevant to what is found on the page. I don’t know what they would expect us to do differently than this. Do you? What is your MOZ currently saying is the optimal number of characters for a Title?"
Any responses would be appreciated. Am I wrong in saying it's "stuffed" and looks spammy? What would you tell your boss?

Awesome!
Thank you!

Here's a video from Google Webmaster Tools confirming that the meta keywords tag is not used for ranking: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html
The only thing anyone might use a meta keywords tag for these days is your competitors scraping your tags to see which keywords you're targeting on which page!

I like your tip about reading it out loud. That has been extremely helpful in eliminating spammy material from my sites.
I've been hearing two opposing views on the meta keywords tag. Some say they are important and some say don't use them at all. I've made a compromise by using them sparingly and not depending on them for anything. Do you have some suggestions on more reliable research I can do on the subject?
Thanks!

I would agree that you use the word "Barcelo" more times than is necessary in a title tag. A good rule of thumb for keyword stuffing: read it out loud. If it sounds crazy, you're probably using the keyword too much. Eric's suggestion for a title tag is a good one, and you could really do anything along that line. It looks like the phrase you're targeting most with that page is "Barcelo Hotel Reviews" so I'd begin the title tag with that phrase. Other words like Resorts will still get some association with the word Barcelo, so there's no need to repeat it.
Your title tag is also currently targeting way too many phrases. It's best to target only one or two key phrases on any given page - it's difficult for a page to rank for more than that. Are there other pages on your site that you could use to target some of these phrases?
It sounds like your boss has some ego built in to those title tags, so maybe start out by saying that 2010 was a long time ago (4 years is like a million years in Internet time) and SEO best practices have updated since then. The best practice now would be to use your keyword at the beginning of the title tag, MAYBE use a secondary keyword if you can work it in in natural-sounding language, and keep it to under about 70 characters.
As for the meta description, ABSOLUTELY add one of those - like Eric points out, your SERP result is a little advertisement for your page and the description tag is another way to target your keywords and convince users to click. Having a description tag also means you have more control over what displays when people share your page in social media. As for the meta keywords tag, I'd dispense with those altogether - they're completely worthless at best and may be a weak spam signal at worst.

This title tag violates many of SEO best practices.
1- There are 5 dashes separating the keywords.
I was taught that using the same word, symbol, or phrase more than 3 times is a no no.2- It is too long: Keep it under 70 characters so the entire title tag displays on SERPs. The way you have it now, the title tag will get the ellipse treatment and will be cut off.
3- You use the word Barcelo 7 times in the title tag.
Red flag! Warning! Be careful. This is definitely keyword stuffing and not necessary to get Google's attention. Unless of course your going for negative attention.4- You do not have a meta description at all:
Write a brief sentence that explains the page. This will show directly under your title tag and is also incredibly important for rank factors as well as conveying the message of the page. Your description should include the keywords in your title tag.Think of your title tag as an advertisement. Sure, it is used by Google to determine the focus of the page, but it is also the first thing a potential customer will see when your result comes up.
Here is how I would change this title tag and the meta description i would used for this page.
Title Tag: Barcelo Hotel Reviews | Barcelo Resorts | Mexico, Dominican Republic
Meta Description: Read our reviews or get more information on Barcelo Hotels and Resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

Homepage title tag: "Keywords for robots" vs "Phrases for users"
Hi all, We keep on listening and going through the articles that "Google is all about user" and people suggesting to just think about users but not search engine bots. I have gone through the title tags of all our competitors websites. Almost everybody directly targeted primary and secondary keywords and few more even. We have written a very good phrase as definite title tag for users beginning with keyword. But we are not getting ranked well comparing to the less optimised or backlinked websites. Two things here to mention is our title tag is almost 2 years old. Title tag begins with secondary keyword with primary keyword like "seo google" is secondary keyword and "seo" is primary keyword". Do I need to completely focus on only primary keyword to rank for it? Thanks

Do I need to track my rankings on the keywords "dog" and "dogs" separately? Or does Google group them together?
I'm creating an SEO content plan for my website, for simplicity's sake lets say it is about dogs. Keeping SEO in mind, I want to strategically phrase my content and monitor my SERP rankings for each of my strategic keywords. I'm only given 150 keywords to track in Moz, do I need to treat singular and plural keywords separately? When I tried to find estimated monthly searches in Google's keyword planner, it is grouping together "dog" and "dogs" under "dogs"... and similarly "dog company" and "dog companies" under "dog companies". But when I use Moz to track my rankings for these keywords, they are separate and my rankings vary between the plural version and singular version of these words. Do I need to track and treat these keywords separately? Or are they grouped together for SEO's sake?

Ecommerce or E-commerce as a Keyword?
I have done a good bit of research but am not sure which word to focus on. I feel that the trend is moving towards no hyphen but I do not have any data to justify that other than google trends. Here is the research I found: Google Trends says ecommerce is more popular

Should I remove my keyword meta?
So it's safe to assume keywords are no longer used by SEs in the old fashioned sense to rank sites, but should be keep them as indicators of site content? It's been suggested by some that they're detrimental for two reasons: 1. Your competitors can snoop the keywords you're targeting but mainly... 2. Over-optimisation is the enemy these days! Thanks for your input 🙂

Queries vs Keywords
Can anyone clarify why my list of queries from google webmaster tools varies so much from the keywords that have resulted in clicks? I have a site that, according to Google analytics, has had clicks from 125 key phrases where as in webmaster tools (via analytics) allegedly only 17 queries have resulted in clicks. Is it becuase GA can't handle less than 5 clicks from the webmaster data or is it something else I am missing? The site I am researching for has very little traffic from other search engines.

Keyword Stuffing
Hi, I have a particular page I am working on fully optimised as per the page rank tool and grading A. Problem is, there is still one issue on the page, the keyword I want to rank for in particular on that page is reporting that I am over using the word. I have looked through the HTML on the body of the page and see that the actual content is not an issue, I have less than 15 mentions of the keyword, the problem actually arises from the Nav Bar The word I am ranking for say is football Well in the nav-bar, I have several pages that are named football-xxx.html So where the actual page content only has 12 mentions of the keyword Football, list has another 13 due to my page naming properties.* Football- xxx Football- xxx Football- xxx Football- xxx Football- xxx Football- xxx ....... And so on up to 13 different pages with a similar naming structure (obviously the XXX are products like socks, shorts, tops, boots etc) So, without asking the obvious, I assume that the way to change is would be to rename the pages (can't really happen), or remove the term football from the body of the content on the website. So firstly, is the Google algorithms not smart enough to recongise that the content in the menu tag is in fact the nav bar ... and page names as opposed to keyword stuffing. Also, how did anyone else handle a similair situation And lastly, I am assuming basic on common sense alone that Keyword stuffing is a big no no, of everything I have learned though SEO Moz, this makes clear and concise sense to me ... So how do I resolve the issue I have here Many thanks in advance for any help offered Regards John

To use the same content just changing the keywords could be seen as duplicate content?
I want to offer the same service or product in many different cities, so instead of creating a new content for each city what I want to do it to copy the content already created for the product and service of a city and then change the name of the city and create a new url inside my website for each city. for example let say I sell handmade rings in the USA, but I want o target each principal city in the USA, so I have want to have a unque url for ecxh city so for example for Miami I want to have www.mydomain.com/handmade-rings-miami and for LA the url would be www.mydomain.com/handmade-rings-la Can I have the same content talking about the handmade rings and just change the keywords and key phrases? or this will count as a duplicate content? content: TITLE: Miami Handmade Rings URL :www.mydomain.com/handmade-rings-miami Shop Now handmade rings in Miami in our online store and get a special discount in Miami purchases over $50 and also get free shipping on Miami Local address... See what our Miami handmade rings clients say about our products.... TITLE: LA Handmade Rings URL: www.mydomain.com/handmade-rings-la Shop Now handmade rings in LA in our online store and get a special discount in LA purchases over $50 and also get free shipping on LA Local address... See what our LA handmade rings clients say about our products.... There are more than 100 location in the country I want to do this, so that is why I want to copy paste and replace.. Thanks in advance, David Orion
