How to avoid duplicate content
-
Hi,
I have a website which is ranking on page 1:
But because of legal reason i had to change the name.
So i moved the landing page to a different domain.
And 301'ed this landing page to the new domain (and removed all products). All the meta data, titles, products are still the same.
www.oldname.com/landing-page is still on the same position
And www.newname.com/landing-page was on page 1 for 1 day and is now on page 4.What did i do wrong and how can I fix this?
Maybe remove www.oldname.com/landing-page from Google with Google Webmaster Central or not allow crawling of this page with .htaccess ? -
Fantastic news! Well done

Pleasure! How did it work out?

That movie explains it really good.
Thank you for sharing! -
You can tell Google in webmaster tools that your site has changed address. Only do this if the entire site has changed address though.
There's a Matt Cutts video on moving domains here:

Best of luck,

Mike, my advice is to 301 all pages from old domain to the new domain and make sure there is no problem with in (usually this shift causes problem which result in bad ranking fluctuations). If everything goes fine… give it a week or two to get things in order!
You will see your old domain will be out of index and new one will started ranking accordingly…
Will it rank no. 1?
Not sure but 301ing the URLs always cause a loss in link juice so I it always depends upon the competition you are chasing!! I believe you also should do some content marketing or awareness program to let your audience know about the new domain… if that will get you some quick links, you might regain your rankings in search engines.
Hope this helps!

I started www.newname.com only last friday.
But don't get me wrong. I am not waiting for this domain to start ranking.
I allready was on page 1 on saturday but now it dropped to page 4.
I think because of duplicate content with www.oldname.comSo that why I wonder if i should do something in GWT to tell google i moved a landingpage to a different domain.
Thanks

How long ago did you do this?
Google is often pretty slow to change things. Sometimes it takes weeks for a simple change like a page title to start appearing in the results...

Duplicate Page Content
Hello, After crawling our site Moz is detecting high priority duplicate page content for our product and article listing pages, For example http://store.bmiresearch.com/bangladesh/power and http://store.bmiresearch.com/newzealand/power are being listed as duplicate pages although they have seperate URLs, page titles and H1 tags. They have the same product listed but I would have thought the differentiation in other areas would be sufficient for these to not be deemed as duplicate pages. Is it likely this issue will be impacting on our search rankings? If so are there any recommendations as to how this issue can be overcome. Thanks

Duplicate Content Issues - Where to start???
Dear All I have recently joined a new company Just Go Holidays - www.justgoholidays.com I have used the SEO Moz tools (yesterday) to review the site and see that I have lots of duplicate content/pages and also lots of duplicate titles all of which I am looking to deal with. Lots of the duplicate pages appear to be surrounding, additional parameters that are used on our site to refine and or track various marketing campaigns. I have therefore been into Google Webmaster Tools and defined each of these parameters. I have also built a new XML sitemap and submitted that too. It looks as is we have two versions of the site, one being at www.justgoholidays.com and the other without the www It appears that there are no redirects from the latter to the former, do I need to use 301's here or is it ok to use canonicalisation instead? Any thoughts on an action plan to try to address these issues in the right order and the right way would be very gratefully received as I am feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. (we also use a CMS system that is not particularly friendly and I think I will have to go directly to the developers to make lots of the required changes which is sure to cost - therefore really don't want to get this wrong) All the best Matt

Duplicate Content - Reverse Phone Directory
Hi, Until a few months ago, my client's site had about 600 pages. He decided to implement what is essentially a reverse phone directory/lookup tool. There are now about 10,000 reverse directory/lookup pages (.html), all with short and duplicate content except for the phone number and the caller name. Needless to say, I'm getting thousands of duplicate content errors. Are there tricks of the trade to deal with this? In nosing around, I've discovered that the pages are showing up in Google search results (when searching for a specific phone number), usually in the first or second position. Ideally, each page would have unique content, but that's next to impossible with 10,000 pages. One potential solution I've come up with is incorporating user-generated content into each page (maybe via Disqus?), which over time would make each page unique. I've also thought about suggesting that he move those pages onto a different domain. I'd appreciate any advice/suggestions, as well as any insights into the long-term repercussions of having so many dupes on the ranking of the 600 solidly unique pages on the site. Thanks in advance for your help!

Duplicate Content
SEOmoz is reporting duplicate content for 2000 of my pages. For example, these are reported as duplicate content: http://curatorseye.com/Name=“Holster-Atlas”---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158

http://curatorseye.com/Name=âHolster-Atlasâ---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158 The actual link on the site is http://www.curatorseye.com/Name=“Holster-Atlas”---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158 Any insight on how to fix this? I'm not sure where the second version of the URL is coming from. Thanks,

How different should content be so that it is not considered duplicate?
I am making a 2nd website for the same company. The name of the company, our services, keywords and contact info will show up several times within the text of both websites. The overall text and paragraphs will be different but some info may be repeated on both sites. Should I continue this? What precautions should I take?

Avoiding Duplicate Content in E-Commerce Product Search/Sorting Results
How do you handle sorting on ecommerce sites? Does it look something like this? For Example: example.com/inventory.php example.com/inventory.php?category=used example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high example.com/inventory.php?category=used&location=seattle If not, how would you handle this? If so, would you just include a no-index tag on all sorted pages to avoid duplicate content issues? Also, how does pagination play into this? Would it be something like this? For Example: example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high__ example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high&page=2 example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high&page=3 If not, how would you handle this? If so, would you still include a no-index tag? Would you include a rel=next/prev tag on these pages in addition to or instead of the no-index tag? I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need me to clarify any of this. Thanks in advance for your help!

Duplicate Content
We have a main sales page and then we have a country specific sales page for about 250 countries. The country specific pages are identical to the main sales page, with the small addition of a country flag and the country name in the h1. I have added a rel canonical tag to all country pages to send the link juice and authority to the main page, because they would be all competing for rankings. I was wondering if having the 250+ indexed pages of duplicate content will effect the ranking of the main page even though they have rel canonical tag. We get some traffic to country pages, but not as much as the main page, but im worried that if we remove those pages and redirect all to main page that we will loose 250 plus indexed pages where we can get traffic through for odd country specific terms. eg searching for uk mobile phone brings up the country specific page instead of main sales page even though the uk sales pages is not optimized for uk terms other than having a flag and the country name in the h1. Any advice?
