Two Domains, which one should be used on Social Media platforms?
-
I have a client who changed from a Branded Domain (301 redirected this domain) to a Partial Match Domain, using the city in the domain for rich keyword. I take care of their Social Media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc.). These social networks used the Branded Domain (with the company name in the domain) for years, now the new web designer is asking that we change Username and Domain to the new Partial Match Domain, which is very "generic" not mentioning the company name. I am reluctant to change for branding mention purposes. Does anyone have any advice?

Hi Denise,
You should be safe to redirect back to the original domain - two months is long enough for Google to have completely indexed the new site and assigned it rankings, but a 301 redirect generally takes care of this and reverses the situation back to its original state. It's not optimal - optimal would have been never doing this in the first place unfortunately - but you do need to complete the redirect back again because the original site is now thought of as the new site, as far as Google is concerned. You need the 301 to say "hey Google, we're not on pmd.com anymore, we're over on brand.com!" just as you did the first time, when you changed the pmd.com two months ago.
Again, it's not optimal because they fewer redirects a domain / site can go through the better, but I'd class this sort of redirect for keywords as damaging and not something you want to keep around.
I hope this helps!
Best,
Jane

Thank you Jane! I am so happy to have received two responses and also relieved to know I am advising my client correctly, with support from you and Casey Markee. It has been less than 2 months since they changed this domain. I asked Casey if the dentist goes back to the branded domain how it will effect SE and whether or not we should "redirect" the PMD. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated also.
Again, thank you!

Thank you so much for your response! You have no idea how helpful this is to me! Yes, the domain was recently changed for SEO ranking and/or geographic benefits; and this is not a law firm. This is a dentist. It was advised by Jane Copland to go back to the branded domain (which I am inclined to agree). If the dentist changes back to the branded domain, will this confuse SE? And, do we dare "redirect" the PMD?
Thank you, in advance, for any advice you have.

Hi Denise,
I have to say that the rebrand strategy worries me too. There was a good need to have a domain name like this in 2006 / 7 or so, but it's very unnecessary now and verges on dangerous if it is seen to be a spammy move. It also reflects quite poorly from a usability point of view - if a brand-name regional insurance company like Pemco (http://www.pemco.com/) for example, and you change your domain to www.seattlecarinsurance.com, it doesn't look particularly professional.
I would definitely avoid making this change across social media as well. Is there any other reason besides SEO that this domain change was made in the first place? If not, I strongly suggest changing this back to the original name because there is unlikely to be any SEO benefit in doing this at all.

Just my two-cents, but that sounds like a TERRIBLE idea. Further, it's going to look pretty disingenuous to your social followings.
If you have a brand, that you've built up social followings on over an extended period of time, it seems VERY short-term to change out different domains. And frankly, the days of partial or exact match domains having long-term, strong, SEO staying power, is really over. Branded sites with branded anchor texts are really the SAFE way to go in what is a clear war by Google on keyword-rich link building.
A domain change is never an easy decision but unless you've legally changed your name or are "rebranding" -- doing a domain change JUST to get some kind of "partial match" in your URL sounds like pretty piss-poor SEO advice. Clearly, I have limited facts here and it sounds like they are doing this for some perceived "local SEO" geographic benefit but in my experience, most of these changes don't end up being successful in the long-term.
Now, the above being said, it is very common in the legal industry to have a keyword-rich domain (ie. http://www.bestinjurylawyers.com/) but use the Firm or Brand Name for social accounts (ie. https://www.facebook.com/TheReevesLawGroup). You can find a ton of examples of firms doing this so it's not the end-of-the-world and you can easily use these examples to justify NOT making a uniform change at your end.
I hope this was helpful. Good luck with your client situation.

Switch domain's CRYPTO focus to B2B
Hi everyone! I have my tough question, hope you'll help with your recommendations! I have a domain for blockchain company (DA 38, 590 linking domains), which started as an ICO project, but rapidly grew to a recognized B2B company with a few B2B clients. What we want is to attract more B2B prospects via Google Search, but the problem is when our prospects google our brand name (which also happens to be our domain, so this domain must be kept) they see mainly ico/crypto SERPs (as the result of ICO ad campaigns, online publicity etc). And they get prejudice towards us and don't trust us in the first place. What we already managed to do is to add some B2B news and links in 1-10 SERPs for our brand name, but still old ones (crypto related don't go so fast). Our management wants our prospects to be able to clearly see the difference between the current company domain (which must be remade to B2B focus only) and the new domain (our token-oriented, since our product is on blockchain). Question: is it possible to do such differentiation in the eyes of Google (and thus our prospects)? if yes, what is the best way to do that? 2 separate domains, not linking to each other or any other way?

My question is in regards to possible conflict in creating an additional website under a new domain for our company.
Our companies, Vulcan Information Packaging and ATC both live under the domain “www.binders.com”. This is a great thing as far as us dominating in the binder industry. However, in the next 2-3 years and forward, we want to build our presence as a company who offers packaging products such as boxes, marketing kits, and other forms of packaging. Obviously, the “binders.com” brand/domain does not contribute much to this effort and can be confusing to customers visiting the site. Essentially, we want to build an additional branding for our company in the packaging industry. Keeping this in mind, we own the domain “www.vulcaninformationpackaging.com” and we are considering building a new website using this domain which contains the word “packaging”. This new site would only promote and contain packaging related products. This new website will advertise and direct traffic to our company Vulcan Information Packaging, which is the same company “binders.com” directs traffic to. So my question is to determine whether doing this might be a practice that Google and other search engines might frown upon. I tend to think it will be fine because we will be promoting and driving traffic for non-binder products where as, binders.com is heavily in binder related products. thank you, Dominic Zaidan

Should a company's online tool be hosted on their own domain?
Our company is developing a web-based tool that will provide good value for its users and generate leads for us. The tool is large enough in scope and different enough than the main service that we provide that we're considering putting it on its own domain. I have two questions: 1. Does it behoove a company to put their online tool on a separate domain if the tool is large enough in scope and different enough from their website's core function / business's core service? (Examples of this would be Hubspot's Marketing Grader or Open Site Explorer before Moz rolled it back into its domain.) 2. If yes, should the domain name a) describe the function of the tool or b) build a brand for the tool itself? Thanks for your help!

Linking new domain to existing domain or....
We have a client's domain that has been live for 8 years. truthbook.com. With the new changes to Google, no matter what we do, we cannot get the words Urantia Book to connect with the website and lift it's search engine returns to the first page where it was for the past 4 years.. It is clear, that no matter what Google may say, the most important factor is having the actual words urantiabook in the domain is imperative. We know it was that way before Google changes (they were always on the first page) but now the client cannot get back on the front page. The mission and theme of the site is Jesus in The Urantia Book. So it is not a stretch to acquire urantiabookandjesus.com and forward it to truthbook.com The question is, "will they get any bang for the change? If they considered changing the actual main domain to urantiabookandjesus.com or .org and forward truthbook.com to it, will they be hurt by that strategy? " Thanks, Jim

Register a Domain: Brand Name VS Product Name
Hi All, Since Google give more priority to brand names and most of the penalized websites by Google's Penguin update are websites which had links with promoted keywords, is it a good idea to register a new domain by the product name (ex: www.leatherbags.com) ?. Or is it good to register the domain by the company or brand name and then build a reputable brand first before targeting product based keywords (ex: leather bags) ?.

Domain Name Masking Redirect for Brandname to Keyworded Domain
Hi mozzers I have 2 domain names, brandname.com and keywordname.com and but have a question related to web vs print marketing on deciding which domain to use or redirect. We already have established unique content first on the Keywordname.com site over the last 6 months and it has started to climb well in google rankings. But now we'd like to do some print advertising and think it would make more sense to use Brandname.com when refering to our website. So the 2 question are: Should I 301 redirect brand.com to keyword.com (preferred as all content and rankings on keyword.com) or vice versa, as I realize I can only have one site to avoid duplicate content. And is it possible to use domain name masking on brand.com if redirecting to keyword.com to avoid risking our rankings, or is masking bad for seo? Thanks!
