Geo-targeting

Hi all,
If I had a global domain but with local country pages on it, i.e.
What's the best way to ensure that the relevant country gets the relevant pages. I.e. the /uk/ pages show in the UK, /usa/ pages in the USA, /au/ pages in Australia. etc. etc.
Is this a Google Webmaster tools setting?
Thanks!

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your reply - this very aptly timed blog was written on the subject yesterday: http://moz.com/blog/hreflang-behaviour-insights.

Actually what you're looking for is called hreflang.
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en
You set the default (for most of our clients that's US) and then you tell Google which pages to serve using which languages.
If you're doing this in a CMS where you'll need to set every page in a template, set it up like this:
" hreflang="x-default" />
" hreflang="en-au" />
" hreflang="en" />The request_URI section adds whichever URL the user is on, ie. your /about or /contact pages. Add this code (with your info) into the header section of your HTML template for all pages and you're good to go.

.co.uk or .com for a UK geo location domain?
Let's say you were in the market to buy a domain for a large city in the UK. Manchester for example. Would you prefer to own the .co.uk or the .com version? Do .co.uk have higher CTR/ranking factors over .com for GEO location based websites in the UK?

Client WIll Not Rank for Targeted KW Terms
Good Morning Mozzers, I am at a total loss. I have been working with a client in a "difficult" (to say the very least) vertical for roughly the past two years and for the life of me, cannot get these clients to rank within the top 3 for the targeted keyword terms. It seems that every time our targeted keyword begin to gain a little bit of traction and improve their ranking position, it is immediately followed by the same keywords plummeting shortly thereafter. I have done everything (in my mind) I can to try and get this client's keyword terms to rank, everything from revising the on-/off-page content, building citations, submitting the site to services like Yext, advertising on AdWords and Yelp, etc. but it doesn't seem to make any significant difference. I'm hoping that someone can offer some guidance into how I can get these clients to start ranking highly for the targeted keyword terms because I'm at a complete loss. I look forward to all of your responses! Thank you for reading. If you'd like to check out the site, the URL is: www.lawtonmd.com

Question regarding geo-targeting in Google Webmaster Tools.
I understand that it's possible to target both domains/subdomains and subfolders to different geographical regions in GWT. However, I was wondering about the effect of targeting the domain to a single country, say the UK. Then targeting subfolders to other regions (say the US and France). e.g. www.domain.com -> UK

www.domain.com/us -> US
www.domain.com/fr -> France etc Would it be better to leave the main domain without a geographical target but set geo-targeting for the subfolders? Or would it be best to set geo-targeting for both the domain and subfolders.0 -
ECommerce keyword targeting: Blog post vs Category page
I'm targeting short head and chunky middle keywords for generating traffic to an ecommerce website. I guess I have two options both with great content: blog posts category pages with content (essentially the blog post). On the basis that it is great content that gets links, I would hope that I could garner links into the heart of the eCommerce website by doing this through option 2: category pages. Any thoughts on blog vs ecommerce category pages for tageting keywords?

How do I geo-target continents & avoid duplicate content?
Hi everyone, We have a website which will have content tailored for a few locations: USA: www.site.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AxialDev
Europe EN: www.site.com/eu
Canada FR: www.site.com/fr-ca Link hreflang and the GWT option are designed for countries. I expect a fair amount of duplicate content; the only differences will be in product selection and prices. What are my options to tell Google that it should serve www.site.com/eu in Europe instead of www.site.com? We are not targeting a particular country on that continent. Thanks!0 -
