How do URL's influence Google Rankings?
-
Hi There,
I have a new client who wishes to rank in Google UK for 'Antique Fireplaces London'. Currently they rank 49th. They do not know their logins for Google Local (where they have 40+ positive reviews). And have very mess social activity (which i am trying to sort out).
The domain is around 8 years old - website has just been redone (drupal) where a lot of the former SEO errors were corrected) but they seem to be outranked by much newer websites that have much lower domain authority and less inbound links. My client also has much more recognition in online trade magazines and newspapers than most of their competitors.
Would buying some additional domains with the keywords they wish to rank for help? Or will this look dodgy to google?
Any other quick tips to give them a boost?

Hi Stacey,
I am not sure if you already have your answer. If not here I go.
For the local you can claim management on the account which would need to be re-verified. This would let you get in there at least an potentially clean up anything that needs it. You would not loose your reviews. Based on your description of old SEO errors I can imagine it may be link based errors which could have developed a algorithmic penalty which in that case a new domain, in the in term only, may be useful. If you are sure it is not algorithmic though I would think that perhaps re-evaluating the on-page and content would be the next step.
Hope this helps if you haven't gotten help already

Having 2 or more domains will not help at all, it does not work link that. you would have to 301 redirect them to a single domain and that single domain is the only one that will help.

Hi Stacey,
EGOL is right - this is an outdated technique (buying exact or partial match domains). Several sites will rank for a lot of keywords with partial / exact match domains, but they are almost universally ranking for other reasons, not solely because of their domain names. Google has worked hard to eliminate the effectiveness of this domaining technique due to how much low-quality content ranked well as a result of this being effective years ago.
Have you looked into any possible penalties? 49th is low for an otherwise well-established company, assuming that the site's on-page optimisation is good.

1/ I would buy an exact match domain for a new and short term project only. If you have a 8 yo known brand/domain, keep it and don't bother with additional domains :).
2/ Your keyword is moderately competitive according to MOZ (39% difficulty score).
To rank on first page you should :
-
Get 10-15 good links with appropriate anchors text.
-
Have a great text/content (2000 words+ // http://bit.ly/1bQL13C).
To rank faster, you could 301 redirect your homepage to yourwebsite.com to yourwebsite.com/antique-fireplaces-london
3/ I assume that your title, headings and ALT attributes are already optimized ~~.

Would buying some additional domains with the keywords they wish to rank for help? Or will this look dodgy to google?
I hope that all of my competitors do this. I am going to email them to offer juicy domains that I have been sitting on for a long time. I will get beer money for selling them the domains cheap and put a pile of worthless work on their plates.
I used to have lots of satellite sites... a long time ago... based upon that experience I have found that the only time that you should start working on another domain in the same niche is after you already hold all of the dominant positions. Because if you don't hold all of the dominant positions then you are wasting you time trying to make ten cents from another site when all you needed to do is add one good page to your existing site to make $500/month.
Even if you rank at #5 for your KW, building another site instead of another page on a kickass site is not going to produce the same return. The only time that I would say that isn't true is when your good site already has tons of pages covering all of the money keywords.
I can put a new page on my stronger site and be taking sales from my competitor the following day.

Hi Stacey,
how well optimised is your clients site in terms of on page for the term they are trying to rank? I would stay away from the keyword domains and focus your efforts on further enhancing the content on your clients site. Don't forget there is less benefit to exact match domains especially since google had an update that targeted lower quality exact match domains.

Incorrect Google Places Listing Outranks Other
We have 2 Google Places listings (due to 2 Google Accounts). One listing (the one with the wrong address) outranks the correct listing. Am working on updating citations and have updated the website with the correct address. I do note that Google has not picked up that the contact page has changed and has not seen the changes to many of the citations. Do we: Update the incorrect listing with the correct address for the time being to resolve issues with clients. Remove the old (incorrect) listing. Or is there a better way to sort this out am concerned that removing the listing will lose us our Google Places rank.

Help with Google+ business name rules
I'm marketing a franchise gym business that has multiple locations within the same city. For the business name, I used to have it set as "Business Name" + City + Tagline. For example: "Ultimate Workout South Calgary Gym and Bootcamps". and "Ultimate Workout North Calgary Gym and Bootcamps". To comply with the google business naming rules I've updated all the listing to just business name. The problem is, now the local search results for my gym locations are confusing. Half the address is cut off in the results, the city is not displayed at all. And sometimes results from a neighbouring city are shown. Anyone have an idea on how to implement a strategy where people at a quick glance understand which location is best for them?

Google My Business - More than 1 business under same roof?
Good morning Mozzers from London, England, I have been having some issues around local SERPs and getting our businesses to rank. The issue I have is we run GYMS, however within our gyms certain locations we run additional businesses like CHILDREN'S NURSERIES or PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINICS etc. Now these are run affectively as different businesses, and you don't need to be a gym member to use these services. However Google only lets you have 1 primary category per business address. And all of our locations are rightly registered as GYMS. So I can't then produce a secondary business listing at the same address.....can I? Has anyone else experienced this problem, or know of a solution? Kindest regards Ben

Is the new local 3-pack the death of Google+ as factor?
So now we have the new 3-pack local results, which obviously cut the listings Google+ link from the results. What I find strange is that is now even when searching the business name alone, there is no sign of the associated Google+ page in the results. I still get other local third party listings like Facebook, Yellowpages, and Yelp – but no link anywhere for the Google+ page. I noticed this today when I wanted to verify something on a client’s page. There was nothing I could do search wise to bring up this business Google+ page. I finally got it by clicking the link through Moz local. After exploring this with some other clients, when I do get a Google+ page in the search results some have produced a 500 error when clicked on. If Google wasn’t killing off Google+, why would they completely omit the pages from their own search results? Another extremely strange thing, the majority of my clients are independent local businesses inside a large national company. Their Google+ listings have always been managed corporately using a bulk listing feed. We could never gain access to these pages and would always manage our listings to match that of the corp. controlled page. Well the last week of July they announced they were giving us the option to take control of the page. This happened with two different companies, MAJOR national competitors in the same industry, within a couple days of each other. They now treat it just like another version of social media, instead of a major factor within search. I find it hard to believe that something isn’t going on…

SEO issues with Physician and Practice not ranking for their own names
I've inherited an SEO client who's got all kinds of ranking problems. Currently his name Dr. Laddis shows up for his old practice, Saratoga Cardiology Associates (http://saratogacardiology.com/) instead of his current one Cardiology Specialty Services (http://cardiologyspecialtyservices.org/ ) He's also showing up with a G+ for the old practice that's listed as closed. The 2nd listing is for his bio on the hospital page.(<cite class="_Rm">https://saratogahospital.org/doctor/theodoros-laddis-md-facc/ )</cite> Then come the usual Dr directories. His YouTube channel shows up. But his actual website isn't until the middle of the 2nd page. I'm also having similar issues getting the practice to show up in search (http://cardiologyspecialtyservices.org/ ). As I was coming on board, they also had a name change from Saratoga Cardiology Specialty Services to Cardiology Specialty Services. Their G+ local business page has the custom URL for Saratoga Cardiology Specialty Services but the name on the page is Cardiology Specialty Services. Their website is actually part of the hospital multisite with a URL redirect. While the site shows up for "cardiologist Saratoga" their G+ page doesn't show up.(https://plus.google.com/+Saratogacardiologyspecialtyservices/about ). I've also done on-page SEO and am still in the process of submitting to directories. Any thoughts on what the hangup is or what I can do to clear up this mess would be appreciated.

I think I'm doing everything right--why the drop in DA/PA?
My DA has gone down from 29 in February to 13 today. Since then, my site traffic has increased 43.5% (organic by 24.6%), I have cleaned up citations, and worked on directory listings (unpaid listings for both local & national directories, including industry-specific ones). Why the drop-off? I'm concerned.

My #1 (A) ranking client in Maps is now #38 after update?
We have a client with 4 locations and all of them do pretty well in Google Maps. Since the latest update, we dropped from #1 (A) all the way down to #38 in Maps. We're still #1 for our keyword in Organic but our Maps got crushed. We use Yext for the citations but we also do some a lot manual ones too. We have 3 reviews on that location but not sure why the big drop. I'm not even sure where to being to get it back. From our research: We noticed our categories were a little out of order. Our primary was "legal services" instead of "personal injury attorney" (we've now updated that.) I've noticed that all the listings ahead of us, minus a few of them, have their homepage as their link. We've always used a local landing page that has hand written directions on how to find us, our hours and who people will meet when they come in. Things relevant to that location. Our domain authority is a 40. Our homepage Page Authority is 49 and our landing page for that location is a 22. What else should we check to see what's happened? Should I move the Google+ page to the homepage instead of the sub-page (as well as the citations we have)? Thanks for your help!
