Website Migration - remove unnecessary sub-folder?
-
Rebuilding a site that currently has good rankings. The original site was build in Joomla. I am doing the rebuild on WordPress. The old site is at the domain www.savannah-dentist.com, but clicking on any link generates a url with a subfolder; i.e. the website is at www.savannah-dentist.com, click on the logo and you will go to www.savannah-dentist.com/rosenthal/, the "meet the doctors" link goes to "www.savannah-dentist.com/rosenthal/meet-the-doctors"
When I rebuild the site, do I have to retain that url structure?
If I get rid of the folder and make everything simply like www.savannah-dentist.com/meet-the-doctors, will I be jeopardizing our rankings?
Thanks!

301 the old links to the new linking structure. If it is already a high ranking page, the link weight should carry through.
Since it already ranks high, I would keep as many elements as you can the same, unless they dont rank well and need to be improved. Make sure to do a site search for indexed pages, and redirect or create a removal request for any unatural cms-generated links. (component/SAMPLE/123456 etc)
DO NOT just delete the entire folder without seeing how many on page links still link to those pages. Check your on-page links to see if it is generated by the menu system, or if is hard-coded in the content.
Wordpress also has a few items you will want to change in the robots.txt file vs the old Joomla site.
User-agent: *
Disallow: /feed/
Disallow: /trackback/
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-content/
Disallow: /wp-includes/
Disallow: /xmlrpc.php
Disallow: /wp-
Allow: /wp-content/uploads/
Sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml
Disallow: /wp-content/pluginsor you could also use this one:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-includes/
Disallow: /wp-content/
Disallow: /archives/ disallow: /?
Disallow: ?replytocom Disallow: /wp-
Disallow: /author
Disallow: /comments/feed/
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google*
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot-Image
Allow: /wp-content/uploads/
User-agent: Adsbot-Google
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot-Mobile
Allow: /Hope this helps! Best of luck with your new build.

If the folder is there for no reason, get rid of it. Rewrite out the entire directory. Try this:
In the .htaccess add:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
Turn mod_rewrite on
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /RewriteRule ^rosenthal/(.*)$ /$1 [L,NC,R=301]

You can 301 to any place, so if it's beneficial to change the structure the site, now's the time to do it. Beware though, when you change the structure of the website, and are placing pages in different folders, you're changing the URL, so it will affect your ranking, hopefully for the positive. I think what you're proposing would be an improvement.

Remove URLs from App
Hi all, our tech team inherited a bit of an SEO pickle. I manage a freemium React JS app built for 80k unique markets worldwide (and associated dedicated URL schema). Ex/ https://www.airdna.co/vacation-rental-data/app/us/california/santa-monica/overview Mistake - App, in its entirety, was indexed by Google in July 2018, which basically resulted in duplicate content penalties because the unique on-page content wasn't readable. Partial Solution - We no indexed all app pages until we were able to implement a "pre-render" / HTML readable solution with associated dynamic meta data for the Overview page in each market. We are now selectively reindexing only the free "Overview" pages that have unique data (with a nofollow on all other page links), but want to persist a noindex on all other pages because the data is not uniquely "readable" before subscribing. We have the technical server-side rules in place and working to ensure this selective indexing. Question - How can we force google to abandoned the >300k cached URLs from the summer's failed deploy? Ex/ https://screencast.com/t/xPLR78IbOEao, would lead you to a live URL such as this which has limited value to the user, https://www.airdna.co/vacation-rental-data/app/us/arizona/phoenix/revenue (Note Google's cached SERPs also have an old URL structure, which we have since 301ed, because we also updated the page structure in October). Those pages are currently and will remain noindexed for the foreseeable future. Our sitemap and robots.txt file is up-to-date, but the old search console only has a temporary removal on a one-by-one basis. Is there a way to do write a rule-based page removal? Or do we simply render these pages in HTML and remove the nofollow to those links from the Overview page so a bot can get to them, and then it would see that there's a noindex on them, and remove them from the SERPs? Thanks for your help and advice!

The best option for expanding a website to another country
Hi everyone, I have a couple questions about expanding my website from US to another country. Which option would be better to use: Country-Coded Top Level Domains, Sub-Directories or Sub-Domains? If I use a new domain, but I want to keep all the content, would canonicalization affect SEO of my new website? I want the new website (or another option) look just like the one I have, except for changing contact information, pictures and adding another language. Thank you!

Website ranking issues
Hi Moz, I have a question about one of our websites that has been ranking very poorly on it's current domain (fancydoorsedmonton.com) lately, but was ranked at #1 for the search term "Edmonton Doors" until last month. The main search terms we're targeting are "Edmonton Doors" and "Doors Edmonton". I made another post regarding the on-page SEO value and had some feedback from that, but there is another issue that seems more likely to cause an issue. There are 2 more domains set up to forward to their main domain: fancydoors.com was their old domain but was registered by someone else and had some questionable, X-rated content put on it. The domain has now been reacquired and redirected to their main domain. There isn't any more questionable content on there anymore. Would this domain's past affect it's current ranking? fancy-doors.com was another old domain of theirs now set up as a redirect. In the past they had another SEO provider work with this domain and did some bad SEO work for them with automated citations, etc. We changed the domain to fancydoorsedmonton.com to get away from that and also include Edmonton in the domain. If you have any ideas or feedback to provide based on this information it would definitely be a huge help to us. Thanks!

What to do with localised landing pages on listings website - Canonical question
Hi Run a pet listings website and we had tonnes of duplicate content that we have resolved. But not sure what to do with the localised landing pages. We have everything pointing back back to the main listings URL http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale-stud-and-adoption/ but haven't pointed the URLs that show pets for specific towns and cities eg http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale/dogs-and-puppies/in-city-of-london/ back to the main url. Obviously this is giving us duplicate content issues, but these pages do rank in local search and drive traffic into the site. So my question is should we canonicalise the local pages back to the main url and if we do will this mean our local landing pages will no longer rank? Is there any alternatives?

Rebranding a Website to a new Domain Name
Hi All, I'm looking to rebrand my current website to a new domain name.
Local Website Optimization | | Mark_Ch
In short the current website has out grown it's potential. The domain name is not memorable nor is it attracting a wider audience.
I will create my new website and 301 redirect the old website to the new, hence pass SEO value. Google Places
Having spoken to Google they tell me that I can simply change the URL in Google Places to the new URL. Articles on my current website
I have a number of rich content articles on my current website, can I simply create my new website and copy & paste these previously written articles? Google+, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
What should I do for accounts associated with the current website? Any other useful information would be much appreciated. Regards Mark0 -
Where to find documentation about UX for Chinese websites?
Does anyone know useful websites, blogs, blogposts or forums about how UX is different in China? We are planning on creating a Chinese version of our ecommerce website. We are already aware of the legal and cultural differences but we still require specific information about the browsing and clicking habits of the Chinese public. Also, figures about the Chinese buying behavior would come in handy. Our webshop contains design items intended for a high-end audience.

Website Mods and SEO for Multi-Location Practice?
We're in the process of taking over a WordPress website within the next week for a 3 location medical practice. These are in 3 different cities. 1 location is in a pretty competitive market, while the other 2 are not. The current site isn't bad for design and navigation and they don't have the budget for a full-redesign. Structurally, it is sound. It lacks a lot of content though and a blog. It is not responsive, should we convert to make it responsive? At first glance you can't tell they have 3 locations and their content for each location and services offered is pretty weak. What other suggestions do any of you have for getting the main site to rank for all 3 locations? I know it'll take some time since they are no where to be found now, but just looking for any other tips you may all have. Thanks!! - Patrick

Bad Backlinks and Copied Website
Since last fall our rankings have been steadily decreasing in position and now we are no longer showing in Google Local positions. We still have decent organic rankings but Local is our primary concern. My website: http://www.petmedicalcenter.com I did some digging and found a ton of spammy looking domains linking back to my site. I took a screenshot from Google Webmaster Tools - Links to Your Site page. http://screencast.com/t/8yYh65xlOU2y I am not sure how this happened as I did not add our URL to most of those websites. Also, I found that this website: http://justinchina.co.uk - has copied our entire website. Every time I make an update to the site, that webpage updates as well. At this point I don't know how to go about cleaning up this mess. Most of those linking domains do not have a contact button and I doubt they would remove my links at my request. Should I use Google's disavow tool? Any thoughts on that? or ideas? Thanks for your help! Brant
