Competitor Ranks Highly Despite LOTS of Duplication
-
One of my Moz campaigns tracks my main competitor. I can't get over the fact that this competitor continues to rank well despite having thousands of duplication issues while I currently have less than 10. Our websites are similar both structurally and product-wise.
The two images attached include OSE comparisons for the keyword "kraft envelopes". My competitor ranks #2 for the term, while I rank #9. I don't get why! And again, looking from a top-level perspective, MOZ shows that my competitor's website is full of duplication issues and other problems while my site is healthy as a horse. All responses are greatly appreciated.

Oh yes Andrew. You should invest some serious time to clean the link profile so that it looks natural and organic. We have seen dramatic improvements with clean link profiles.
-
IMHO, no link audit software can give you the whole picture of your link profile but a combination of all those can. We use almost all of them while carrying out a major backlinks check especially when dealing with penguin recovery.

Hi Andrew,
I meant, the competitor's website is much bigger and is driving loads of organic traffic for high search volume keywords/phrases.
"I thought that the more pages a website had, the more the link juice had to be distributed. "
This theory is not a correct perspective. Even with more pages, the link juice will be still within the website unless you have a ton of out-bound links pointing to external websites.
There are a lot of other ranking factors that make the competitor rank ahead of you. If you look at organic search competition for your website in SEMRush, the competitor website is number one competitor for your website and if you look at the organic search competition for your competitor website, your website stands at 9th position. Please have a look at the ranking factors list provided in my previous post. Moreover, no matter how good a website is, it cannot rank for all the keywords/phrases in the niche. When I looked further down in the organic keywords data for both of your domains, its very evident that your competitor ranks excellently well for search queries with the term, 'envelopes' in them. Infact, they are the number one site in Google for almost all the envelopes related search queries. Their domain name must be playing a bit role in this along with other ranking factors.

Thank you Moosa. I will be conducting a more thorough audit.
-
After more research, I realize my link audit consisted mainly of link removal for just my homepage. I will have to do more for all of my inner pages. Thank you!
-
Is AHREFs the best link audit software? I conducted a major link audit recently using a combination of OSE and webmaster tools but they clearly did not catch everything.
-
Thank you Devanur. We are aware of our poor URL structure and are considering a site-wide change to include separators in all URLs.
"The competitor has about 6 times more pages in Google index" - - why does this matter? I thought that the more pages a website had, the more the link juice had to be distributed.

Moosa got it spot on. Just by looking at few parameters, we can't say that a website can rank high in Google. Here is something that can be handy while doing a comprehensive SEO audit. Though the list in there is not an official ranking parameters list, it can give you a fair idea about how and what things come in to play when it comes to search engine rankings. Hope it helps:

One of the basic things that you need to understand is that Google uses complex mathematics (Algorithms) to rank a website against a query and there are around 200 plus signals and not all of them are widely discussed.
There could be several reasons which includes quality of content, title tags, linking domains, website structure, internal linking and the list goes on.
Keeping the Devanur’s comment in mind I can safely advise you to do audit your website again and fix the problem to make it more SEO friendly plus get links from high quality places.
Hope this helps!

Just another addition to the above. When I checked the backlinks using AHREFs for the jampaper page, most of the links come from Chinese domains. This might not be good if your target market is not China. You might want to look in to this.

Hi,
Before digging deep, the striking difference is the URL structure. Your competitor has a clean URL structure with hyphen as a word separator. Looking at your URL, it has no word separators and looks sub-optimal with too many words held together without word separators.
Coming to the duplication issues. Just because a site has duplicate content, its not bound to be penalized. The intention matters here than the duplication itself. If you look at the size of the websites. The competitor has about 6 times more pages in Google index and drives much more organic traffic.I looked at SEMRush data for both the sites and the competitor is a clear winner.
Moreover, the search query also matters a lot in this case and the competitor has it in the domain name. This also plays an important role. Those were my two cents and the first thing that I would do is to make the URL structure a little better.
Good luck friend.
Best regards,
Devanur Rafi

Google RankBrain Update Affecting Ranking Reports?
In the past 2 months we have been seeing a large amount of movement in our ranking reports in Moz Pro. Here is what is going on: We run reports for around 15 different clients using Moz. We also track around an average of 100-150 different keywords for each client (some more, some less). What I have seen lately is that we have a week where the sites do great, next week a large shift down. The week after a large shift up. The next week a large shift down. Rinse, repeat. It makes it very hard to spot the trouble areas on a page or keyword when there doesn't really seem to be a consistent way of knowing what the trends are. It appears to be random, and the next week they seem to recover, along with some that do not. We will see some keywords drop 30 places, only to regain the majority of that drop the following week. Some of the sites have received content updates while others have remained largely untouched. It is very confusing to see this pattern, and I have tracked it for about 2 months. Is anyone seeing a similar pattern in their reports? Could this be related to the rollout of Google's RankBrain, the new AI learning tech from Google? Most of the keywords are tracked are not long tail, and are basic local business/service type of keywords. Plumber in St Louis, etc etc

Why did my rankings drop so fast?
Hi Mozzers, One of my clients have suffered from a sudden ranking loss that started beginning of August. A little background: My client is a big cleaning company that has many franchises nationwide and had very good rankings for the past few months. Generally the busiest time of the year is summer and the 4th quarter is the slowest. Organic Traffic generally drops by 5 to 10% between Q3 and Q4 of each year. 2 things have caught my attention while investigating these ranking losses The latest recent Update from the moz index evaluated the website's DA of 48 when in the summer we had a DA of 56. Never seen such a drop before!! My first question is how accurate is the moz index? How can I make sure this data is accurate? I am very surprised because we have been working hard on getting good quality links for the past year and a half. If the DA is accurate then that could explain the ranking loss Google updating its search engine to the Hummingbird version. Do you guys think this has anything to do with the drop in rankings? The content on the website is not the best but is fairly decent. I am still not sure how the ranking drop could be related to Hummingbird? I have also checked webmaster tools to see if I got hit somehow by penguin and it seems fine. Thanks mozzers

Why am I getting different ranking results on Google?
Because the rank checker on SEOMOZ is temporarily down for upgrade, I followed the link over to the other suggested rank checker on seobook.com which installs a plug-in to Firefox and it seems to be working fine….BUT my question is when I check out my two highest traffic keywords which are “Whitby holiday cottages” and “Whitby cottages” against my website www.endeavourcottage.co.uk it tells me I'm ranking position 2 on both Google.com and Google.co.uk but I don't think I am. When I do the same check using a proxy server called hidemyass.com to check my rankings again on Google.co.uk and .com I appeared to be lower down the rankings like position 8. Does anyone have any idea of which is the accurate reference to my rankings? What do you do to check your rankings ? And one last quick secondary question is when I searching Google chrome using same key words again I come at the top position A on the Google maps listing but using Firefox or Internet Explorer there is no Google maps visible ways that? At the end of the day out rankings are important but where are working towards more traffic...... Cheers

Rankings in Google UK
Hi there, Can someone explain the difference between the results in Google UK - the default is 'The Web', whereas I can opt to choose 'Pages from the UK'. My question is: If I'm tracking rankings for Google United Kingdom in SEOMoz, is it tracking the results from 'Pages from the UK' or the default setting of 'The Web'? Are there any statistics on how many people choose to see 'Pages from the UK'? Thanks

How can I clean up my crawl report from duplicate records?
I am viewing my Crawl Diagnostics Report. My report is filled with data which really shouldn't be there. For example I have a page: http://www.terapvp.com/forums/Ghost/ This is a main forum page. It contains a list of many threads. The list can be sorted on many values. The page is canonicalized, and has been since it was created. My crawl report shows this page listed 15 times. http://www.terapvp.com/forums/Ghost/?direction=asc http://www.terapvp.com/forums/Ghost/?direction=desc http://www.terapvp.com/forums/Ghost/?order=post_date and so forth. Each of those pages uses the same canonicalization reference shared above. I have three questions: Why is this data appearing in my crawl report? These pages are properly canonicalized. If these pages are supposed to appear in the report for some reason, how can I remove them? My desire is to focus on any pages which may have an issue which needs to be addressed. This site has about 50 forum pages and when you add an extra 15 pages per forum, it becomes a lot harder to locate actionable data. To make matters worse, these forum indexes often have many pages. So if I have a "Corvette" forum there that is 10 pages long, then there will be 150 extra pages just for that particular forum in my crawl report. Is there anything I am missing? To the best of my knowledge everything is set up according to the best SEO practices. If there is any other opinions, I would like to hear them.
