Distinguish a Post from a Category
-
Hi Community,
The company I work for wants to create a blog as a subfolder from https://www.petpremium.com/ (we are working on it's structure yet). Our main site its build on wordpress and so our blog (with a differente design).
What would be the best way to distinguish a post from a category if they are in the same level of the url, example (example.com/blog/CATEGORY/ and example.com/blog/post-name-here). Or should a post always be under a category?
Im asking this because the way we have it, we need to place a .html at the end of the title to make it clear that the title is NOT a category or tag.

Hi,
Use schema org 2.0 tags for pages and blog post entries. Google uses these to distinguishes between the two. Use page tags for the category and blog page templates and blog post tags for the posts. A blog home page is essentially a categories page that displays all posts for all categories and shows an excerpt and deep link. Use rel previous / next for pagination for these pages.
Then implement a 3-link system for authorship which is optimal for blog seo. Each author has a author page on the domain and all post for an author point to his / her author page. Use the rel=author tag for blog post with the author name in the byline linking to the author bio page. Link the author bio page to his Google+ personal profile with rel=me and make sure they link back from there profile to the domain of the blog under the tab About and then Contributor to. Place a Google+ badge for pages on your blog page and presto your are a nasty mean blog.
Hope this helps.
PS. see the diagram for 3-link schema. It's Dutch but still understandable I think/hope.

I'll use Moz as an example. Category page: http://moz.com/blog/category/technical-seo (so, your first thought was correct)
Personally, I agree with and use this approach because it makes logical sense from a hierarchical standpoint. As you go down from the home page to a blog page (or any section page) to a category page to an individual post, the focus becomes narrower and narrower. So it's more intuitive for Google to understand what your site is all about.
I hope that helps!

Best way to handle outdated & years old Blog-posts?
Hi all, We have almost 1000 pages or posts from our blog which are indexed in Google. Few of them are years old, but they have some relevant and credible content which appears in search results. I am just worried about other hundreds of non-relevant posts which are years old. Being hosting hundreds of them, our website is holding lots of these useless indexing pages which might be giving us little negative impact of keeping non-ranking pages. What's the best way to handle them? Are these pages Okay? Or must be non-indexed or deleted? Thanks

How is your site holding up post Penguin 4.0 roll out?
Hi team I was reading an article this morning from Barry Schwartz at SERoundtable about the impact of Penguin 4.0 and how webmasters are reporting minimal effects since launch. There was another article posted this morning about how the roll out may have began before the launch date, which would make sense as MozCast was reporting high temperatures leading up to Friday, specifically 9/12 to 9/15. I was wondering how everyone's traffic / rankings are performing after news broke on Friday, 9/23? Were you see fluctuations before that? What are you focusing on most now that Penguin 4.0 has launched? I understand we are a few days in and this is a real time / ongoing rollout, but I would be interested to hear what everyone has been seeing so far, if anything! Hope you all are doing well and I'm looking forward to hearing from you! Good luck!

Category Containing a Product searched shows up higher in google then the product page itself?
Hello Moz Wizards, We have recently launched a new eCommerce website www.memoky.com and think we did a pretty good job with the markup structure for feeding the hungry google bot all information available about a the products. However google doesn't like us very much : ( It seems every time you google a product that we carry; the category pages that contain that product will show up, but the product page itself does not. Below are two examples, however this seems to be site-wide which makes me feel like there is an underlying issue that we are missing. Examples

Google has indexed some of our old posts. What took so long and will we lose rank for their brevity?
Hi, We just had a few of our old blog posts indexed by Google. There are short formed posts, and I want to make sure we're not going to get dinged by Google for their length. Can you advise?https://www.policygenius.com/blog/guaranteed-issue

Does A Low Quality Post With Pagerank Merit Deleting?
Hello, We are cleaning up our low quality content on our website and we are struggling with the idea of deleting blog posts that have a pagerank of 1 or above, but pull in little to no views on the website. My research seems to indicate that low quality content in terms of pageviews is possibly a negative for our website as a whole. My dilemma, to delete the pages that hold rank or keep them? thank you Mike

Best practice for someone wanting to repost / translate some of your blog posts?
I've been contacted by several sites (a few in other countries) who would like to repost some of our articles on their site. A few of these are in other countries and they would like to translate them in their language. (we have a site about raising a child with Down syndrome so they are wanting to use our info to help people...not "beat us" in rankings, or anything like that.) I didn't know what the best practice on this was. I don't want to get dinged for duplicate content or have someone rank higher than me for my own article, etc. Just curious what the best way to go about this was. I'm also assuming the articles that are translated wouldn't be an issue at all since the content will be in another language. Is this right? Thanks!
