Yes I have recently done something similar 2 times. One time for a local company which had a SEO targeting an geographically unsuitable service area for my client. It is a traffic school operating in a large city situated next to an even larger city. The SEO took a new domein xxxcity.nl and focused the keyword strategy on this as well. But how do the instructors pickup and drop off students in city A north and city B south within a hour or 90 minutes. Never going to happen 8 times a day on time. And it doesnt convert well either because people now this when the see an offer.
But I undid the city in the url part by copying the website enterely and placed a simple php script in the WordPress index.php file in the root. This replaces the domain for all request and redirects with a 301. The destination domain is the domain the client previously used.
// Permanent redirect of all PR from A > B
// Get http request headers for requests on old page
$uri = $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];// Get the path after the old domain to redirect to corresponding page on new
$url_path = parse_url($uri, PHP_URL_PATH);// drop the city from the url and go to new location
$location_new = 'http://www.xxxrijschool.nl' . $url_path;// send 301 and load destination url
header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: $location_new");exit();
?>The above script I place on the old domain A but only after copying the whole website to the new domain B. If it's a 1-on-1 copy then this script is places on A. Thats all. It will cost some PageRank to move 2 times for 1 page but the transfer starts in a few days and will be noticeable in 2 weeks or so. After 6-8 weeks it will mostly be moved and normalize from there on. If in between we optimize on-page and aquire good backlinks then it will turn the decline of rank and can outperform the old site in a matter of 8 weeks.
For larger and large site it's recommended that the time to live for DNS records is set to 5 minutes at least a week in advanced, This is recommended by google somewhere in the guide for transfering domains in webmaster tools I believe.
Hope this helps/
Gr Daniel

Choosing root domain for a subdomain
We own two root domains in the .edu space. According to Open Site Explorer, one has a domain authority of 76, while the other has a DA of 94. We operate a collection of degree microsites as subdomains of the lower-ranking root domain, e.g. www.degreename.domain76.edu. All other things being equal, would these sites benefit if we migrated them to www.degreename.domain94.edu? The question seems to hinge on whether subdomains inherit any of the root domain's authority, and the answers I have seen to that question are "sometimes" and "maybe". Lastly, as an alternative, would we realize greater SEO improvements by moving the degrees to a directory structure under domain94, i.e. www.domain94.edu/degrees/degree-name? Thank you for your help!

SEO connectivity between domains and sub-domains
Hi, My web site georgerossphotography.com and my ecommerce site store.georgerossphotography.com each reside on different servers. georgerossphotography.com has a domain authority of 30 store.georgerossphotography.com has a domain authority of 30 Clearly, they are considered two individual sites but is there any way that I can boost the performance of the primary domain by passing along some for that good SEO juice from the sub-domain? Any input would be gratefully received. Regards,

We are moving one website to a different domain and would like to know what is the best way to do it without hurting SEO
The website we want to move, let's say www.olddomain.com has a low quality back links profile, in fact it received a manual notification from google of unnatural links detected; but the home page has a PR 3. We want to move it to a different domain let's say www.newdomain.com. We would like to know if it's better to do a 301 redirect to the new domain, in order to transfer the link juice or if it would be better to do a 302, taking into account that this redirect won't pass any link juice, so it would be like start from scratch with this new domain. Thanks for your help.

Http to https conversion - what were your experiences?
Background: Our devs have been talking about changing some of our websites so that all pages are https vs just those that are a part of our logins and shopping carts. From what I have read things that need to be done as a part of this are make sure that https pages will allow caching setup new site in GWT put 301 redirects in place update all internal links, social profiles etc everywhere you can to https URLs can server handle the extra load so no impact on site speed There is an old MCutts video that says essentially, "works for Pay Pal" and "you can try it, but test it on a smaller site first" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeFo4ytOk8M The comments below the video are all stories about loss in rank and traffic with some coming back. Not sure if these folks did the move correctly, but still, you never know. Question: Have any of you done a technically "correct" move of an entire site from http to https using the suggestions above? What was your experience? Any gotchas? Just to be clear, I am not talking about setting up a site from scratch, but wanted to know impact on an established site. Thx

Using Webmaster Tools to Redirect Domain to Specific Page on Another Domain
Hey Everyone, we redirected an entire domain to a specific URL on another domain (not the homepage). We used a 301 Redirect, but I'm also wondering if I should use the Google Webmaster Tools "Change of Address" section to redirect. There is no option to redirect the old domain to the specific URL on the new domain within the "Change of Address" section. Thoughts?

Could Sub domains damage our SEO?
Hi there, We're currently looking into integrating a new internal search function to our site which will involve housing the search results on a sub domain of our site. We have no intention of these search result pages becoming landing pages for organic traffic but would the inclusion of a sub domain affect the optimization of the main domain? i.e. could it effect our authority? Domains for regional websites
Please take a look at 7city.com This landing page contains links to: www.7city.co.uk www.7city.ae www.7city.com.sg and our US website which is also www.7city.com It is programmed so: If you are a first time user and type www.7city.com you go to the landing page above. If you then click on AMERICAS, it sets a cookie and directs you to http://www.7city.com/home . When you revisit www.7city.com in the future as the cookie is set you will be automatically sent to the AMERICAS website i.e http://www.7city.com/home. Our US websites is nor performing well on organic ranking compared to other regional website. Is the above technique hindering our organic ranking in the US. Also, I have been led to believe that you get a higher ranking if the domain is specific to a country. Is this true? Does 7city.com receive higher ranking than if I created it as 7city.us for example? Many Thanks Mark

We've just bought a new domain - need advice on the exact procedure to follow...
Hi guys, We've just bought a 3 letter .co.uk domain to replace our current 20 character old domain. Our existing domain is PR5 with quite a few links (that we can modify no problem) We're currently .301 redirecting the new domain to the old domain. I was looking at the procedure in one of the guides but as it's slightly different - is this the correct procedure? 1. prep the duplicate site on new domain and prep the individual htaccess .301 redirects 2. Add new the domain to google webmaster tools bing Webmaster centre 2. On the switchover date - modify all possible incoming links from external sites 3. On the switchover date - apply the .301 redirects and make the new site live 4. On the switchover date - apply the new sitemaps to google & bing 5. on the switchover date - fill out the change of address form in webmaster tools 6. Do the happy dance? many thanks in advance, Tony.
