website Based in India But need traffic from Europe and North America
-
We are based in India but have all our prospective clientele in Europe and North America.
The problem is ; despite all our efforts we are getting almost 60% traffic from India which is not our target region.
We have already tried following
-
hosting our website on US server
-
adding GB and US language tags
-
webmaster target region only allows one country so we cannot set the target there
Apart from this any other suggestion?

We have a similar problem, but in reverse. It's a UK website that needs to rank in Asia but not UK.
We've tried a few things - shifting the server made no difference (nor the speed benefits) and geo locating on webmaster tools was pointless as we have a 5 country target market. Targeting cities again didn't help because the number of location targeted searches was sub 1% for the relevant keywords.
So there were two things that we did that seemed to have some benefit. First we targeted some non valuable but relevant keywords with high search volumes (2 orders of magnitude more than our real targets) and got a high ranking for that. Then put our effort into getting this traffic to convert to the non-ranking pages.
Secondly because there was non substantial difference in EU and Asian ranking for our keywords we focused on ranking well in Europe and then just filtered out the EU and US traffic and we saw benefits.
What I'd do here in your case is focus on the Indian market to get lots of relevant back links. It should be easier than the US in someways and take advantage of the size of the market and it's lack of sophistication to increase the volume of keywords. If websites are anything like they are in Asia there is a lot of crap design and zero optimisation. So it should be possible to put together an outreach package that generates lots of low DA links that are very relevant for lower costs than in the US.
So for example if you were looking at outsourced accounting I'd build link bait that appeals to Indian accounting firms to get the links to your key pages - but optimise them for US consumption.
Of course all this depends on your market and keywords but I hope it's given some ideas.

It all depends on relevancy of content and other signals. But also for a new site, it is just far harder to rank for US and west European countries. There is so much competition for those countries and less in India so it is easier to rank there. You may not need this , but I am thinking it would be far easier to rank for African countries now but the traffic you may get is not meaningful for you.
I am sure you may have already taken care of this, but GWT has a setting to signal which country you want to target.
-
Sorry but non of the above suggestions are working. As per my further research it looks like Google takes multiple signals to identify including address on contact page , If publisher and author tag location. (if these are available)...
-
Apologies as its a long shot as i assume you may not have one,
But i always find that a local address on the site helps, We include this in the site wide footer,

Yes, choose a smaller city and figure out what it takes to show up for searches for you services + city name and then replicate that for other/larger cities. That's really what anyone has to in their own country.

Chris
All our social media posts are pertaining to US or Europe clients only. Nothing relevant to India. When you say “focusing on specific cities” does it mean that target city name should be the part of our content?

Prashant,
Links and social engagement signals from within your target geography show that your offerings have some "importance" in those places and having google recognize your importance, or authority, is critical. In addition, remember that ranking nationally for products and services is tough. Think about focusing on specific cities as target markets, rather than on the countries themselves. Be prepared for a long, uphill battle when you're based in one country and trying to get your customers from another.

Unexplainable drop in traffic
Hello Mozzers, I am new at Moz and certainly hope you can help me!

I used to consider myself very knowledgeable in SEO since I had hundreds or maybe thousands of keywords very well ranked on Google Guatemala (www.google.com.gt) for more than a decade. That was until a year ago: November 8th, 2019... On that date, all of my rankings plummeted, never to return. At first I thought it was just a hickup from the Google Algorithm, but as days turned into weeks I became very worried, so I started doing a bunch of things: Reworked the pages (except home page) to make them responsive (I used to have two versions of each page, one for desktop and one for mobile). Removed the ads from the pages to make them faster, thinking it could be due to the speed (even if my competitors sites were slower!) Fixed thousands of 404s Disavowed thousands of bad domains and spammy URLs (I never bought a single link but there were thousands of links from forums, theglobe network, etc) Removed more than 12,000 members from my own forum who had never posted anything: about 4000 of them just had created a profile to include a link to different extenral sites. Fixed a few other technical aspects... Nothing helped. In fact, my rankings have kept going down. My content is good and unique, my site has good DA but still I get outranked and buried by several sites which don't have as much information as I have. There are NO manual actions against my site according to Search Console. As I mentioned before, I have never bought any backlinks, so all of my links should be natural (although there were thousands of links to my forum from spammy sites which I disavowed). So, I am frustrated as I really don't know what the problem is. I am giving you 3 examples of Keywords and URLs of pages that were number one for years, and now are not even on first page, so that you can see them and tell me your thoughts about what may be happening: KEYWORD: VOLCANES DE GUATEMALA
URL: https://www.deguate.com/geografia/volcanes/Los-volcanes-de-Guatemala.shtml Note: was #1, now is on 5th page. Removed all the ads to see if it would help. KEYWORD: MINISTERIOS DE GUATEMALA URL: https://www.deguate.com/artman/publish/politica_ministerios/Los-ministerios-de-Guatemala.shtml Note: was #1, now is on 2nd page. Removed all the ads to see if it would help. KEYWORD: LEYENDAS DE GUATEMALA URL: https://www.deguate.com/artman/publish/misterios-leyendas/las-leyendas-mas-famosas-en-guatemala.shtml Note: Was #1, now is on 3rd page. It's stuffed with ads, as it doesn't seem to matter wheter my pages have ads or not, and since I lost my rankings on thousands of pages at least I can probably generate a little more income like that. Thank you so much for the help you can provide!0 -

Why is our website not generating organic traffic?
Our website is struggling to generate organic traffic over the past few months and we're lost as to why. It's a relatively new site. It's mobile friendly, all products have meta descriptions and product images have alt tags. Content is added regularly. Site speed could be better and alt tags need to be added to images on the blog but other than that we're stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Help Needed With .htaccess RewriteRule
Hello Fellow Mozzers, I would really appreciate a little help as I have been banging my head against a wall for the last few hours trying to create a .htaccess RewriteRule. I have around 300 URLs that I need to 301 redirect following a site re-build, they are in groups of similar urls but infortunately not broken down in to folders. Here is an example of a few URLs:- https://www.domain.co.uk/chamaecyparis-lawsoniana-ellwoodii_2.htm
