In Crawl Diagnostics, length of title element is incorrect
-
Hey all,
It appears the Moz crawler is misreading the number of characters in my website's page titles. It shows 72 characters for the following page's title element:
http://giavan.com/products/orange-crystal-chain-necklace-with-drop
The page title for this web page is: Orange Crystal Chain Necklace with Drop | Giavan
which is 48 characters. As it stands, this page title is displayed at 48 characters in Google SERPs.
I am getting "This Element is Too Long" issue on 925 pages, which is just about the entire site. These issues appeared after I added additional Shopify (Liquid) code to the page title. If you inspect the code, you will see title element looks a bit odd with extra spacing and line breaks.
What I'd like to know is whether or not it's necessary to rewrite the Shopify code, for SEM purposes. My feeling is that it's okay because the page titles look fine in SERPs but those 925 Moz crawl errors are kind of scary.
Thanks for your help!

This appears to have fixed the problem, thank you. Had to add a non-breaking space before {% endif %}{{ page_title }} but from what I can tell, your solution resolved the character count discrepancy. I expect this will be validated when Moz re-crawls the site.

Ok this might help without changing any code really. The way most templating languages work is they preserve spaces and returns between statements so they can be formatted correctly. Just put your code on one line like this
{% if current_tags %} {{ current_tags | join: ', ' | capitalize }}{% endif %}{{ page_title }}{% if current_page != 1 %} – Page {{ current_page }}{% endif %}{% unless page_title contains shop.name %} | {{ shop.name }}{% endunless %}
With no spaces in between. Then test it, if everything is run together just a space between the variable. But that should take out the hard returns and return your title tag on one line like normal.

Here is the liquid code. It inserts tags like "Red" and "Teardrop" into the page title to make the page title more descriptive.
<title><br /> {% if current_tags %} {{ current_tags | join: ', ' | capitalize }}{% endif %}<br /> {{ page_title }}<br /> <br /> {% if current_page != 1 %} – Page {{ current_page }}{% endif %}<br /> {% unless page_title contains shop.name %} | {{ shop.name }}{% endunless %}<br /></title>
Thanks so much for helping me out with this.

The post by Tiffany is correct, but most crawlers like moz work on string length. What the issue looks like is that the template is sending out a lot of white space that is being counted in the string length. Where this comes into play and why it is not noticeable is this. In html if you have two spacebar spaces, it will only render as one space in viewports. But in the code you will still have the two spaces.
The best solution to fix what you have would be to try to attach a filter to your current code, thus reducing the number of blank spaces and line breaks. Can you past what liquid code you currently have to generate the page title and I might can work something out to test. I haven't used liquid before, but it looks close enough to smarty that I might could work something out.

It is my understanding that it is based on pixels and not so much characters count. For example:
mommy
little
Mommy is only 5 characters, while Little is a whole character more. However, it is the actual distance, not the character count. At least that is my understanding.

Title tags drawn from breadcrumbs
My client has a magento site that we've recently started working on. After the site was crawled by Moz a couple of times we noticed there was an issue with title tags being too long. However, when we looked closer at the data, Moz was seemingly picking up the breadcrumbs as the title tag. The actual tag is a small part of the breadcrumbs, but Moz was reporting they were the same. For example:
Moz Pro | | Stone_Junction
Breadcrumbs - home>products>category A of products
Title Tag - category A of products I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem? Is it Moz's mistake or is the title tag auto generating from the breadcrumbs and cutting off the beginning somehow? Any information would be really helpful, thanks.0 -
Why is Moz Reporting as Duplicate Page Titles?
Our most recent MOZ crawl campaign is reporting 931 duplicate page title errors, most of which are "Product Review" pages like the following. Although there is only one review on this page, http://www.audiobooksonline.com/Cell_Stephen_King_unabridged_compact_discs.html, MOZ is reporting 15 duplicate page title, four of which I present below. http://www.audiobooksonline.com/reviews/review.php/full/0743554337/0/name/desc

How to find page with the link that returns a 404 error indicated in my crawl diagnostics?
Hi Newbie here - I am trying to understand what to do, step by step, after getting my initial reports back from seomoz. The first is regarding the 404 errors shown as high priority to fix, in crawl diagnostics. I reviewed the support info help on the crawl diagnostics page referring to 404 errors, but still did not understand exactly what I am supposed to do...same with the Q&A section when I searched how to fix 404 errors. I just could not understand exactly what anyone was talking about in relation to my 404 issues. It seems I would want to find the page that had the bad link that sent a visitor to a page not found, and then correct the problem by removing the link, or correcting and re-uploading the page being linked to. I saw some suggestions that seemed to indicate that seomoz itself will not let me find the page where the bad link is and that I would need to use some external program to do this. I would think that if seomoz found the bad page, it would also tell me what page the link(s) to the bad page exists on. A number of suggestions were to use a 301 redirect somehow as the solution, but was not clear when to do this versus, just removing the bad link, or repairing the page the link was pointing to. I think therefore my question is how do I find the links that lead to 404 page not founds, and fix the problem. Thanks Galen

How does SEOmoz pull its duplicate page title and content information?
I ask because I am getting errors based on URLs that do not even exist on our site. For example: http://www.robots.com/applications/abb/panasonic/robots this URL does not even exist for our site, but somehow it is listed in the error section of page title duplication tool. http://www.robots.com/applications/ exists, but there is no place to get to an ABB or a Panasonic robot from this page, not to mention an ABB/Panasonic (which for sure does not exist). ?? We have quite a few of these out there and just wondering how to find out where the link is coming from. When we checked our URLs through Integrity, links like the one listed above (which we had 29 of them listed) that do not show up. Thoughts? Thanks! Janelle

In my crawl diagnostics, there are links to duplicate content. How can I track down where these links originated in?
How can I find out how SEOMOz found these links to begin with? That would help fix the issue. Where's the source page where the link was first encountered listed at?

& VS & - Title too long?
It seems that SEO Moz inturprets & as the html ascii character code: & in my titles. This is pushing the titles over the limit by 1 or 2 characters in some cases. Does this matter? does google actually treat & the same way? or is this an SEO Moz bug?
