Spam links - which link is most damaging to my rankings.
-
I have just started using Open Site Explorer and discovered a lot of spam links to my website.
(I have mostly ranked on page for many years one but in the last two weeks ranking have dropped to page two)
The links have Anchor Text such as Scam - Dishonest - Drugs. Most of the of the links are "nofollow".
Will links with "nofollow" affect my ranking and if so which of the links should i priorities to remove?
Do I look at Link Equity - Domain Authority - Page Authority or other criteria? Many thanks

Thank you - I think i will try to remove as many as possible, and then disavow other they cant remove.
-
I would disavow them also. Matt Cutts commented on this a while ago and recommended in essence " any doubt" disavow.
Do this via GWT. (edit Added) Google Webmaster Tools

Now technically No-follow links should not affect your site however I'm not convinced that they are not used as some sort of signal plus if they supposedly are not used they shouldn't matter if you remove them (especially if they are doing you site harm). remember though if you remove follow links its a good idea to also counter the removed links by creating fresh links so you don't have a a deficit.
Short answer - No-follow like shouldn't affect your rankings. (but you can still remove them if you think they are harming you)
good luck.

On our site by mistake some wrong links were entered and google crawled them. We have fixed those links. But they still show up in Not Found Errors. Should we just mark them as fixed? Or what is the best way to deal with them?
Some parameter was not sent. So the link was read as : null/city, null/country instead cityname/city

Should I no follow all external links?
I have worked with a few different SEO firms lately and a lot of them have recommended on the sites I was working on to "no-follow" all external links on the site. On one hand this traps all the link equity/Pagerank. On the other I would think this practice is frowned upon by Google. What are some opinions on this?

Damage Control
So here's the deal.....I HAVE to link my external website www.ldnwicklesscandles.com....and any shopping/ecommerce sections of it to my company sponsored website: ukwicklessscents.scentsy.co.uk so all transactions go through that. Why do a separate website you might ask? ....our company websites are extremely limited in design and content we're allowed to add like blogs, etc, etc and things to add content to help with longtail searches. So most of us involved with the company do external sites and link to our other sites. Which means I have link juice spread over the two sites because so much of the site is linking out...which most means I've got to work twice as hard. Although my hands are really tied with a lot of things with this, I'm wondering if there's anything you might recommend to lessen the damage so to speak....maybe like changing the navigational structure of my external website so I'm only linking out when absolutely necessary? I've been reading about navigational structure and it mentions the home page should only link out to the most important pages? Would this work? Maybe none of this is something I should worry about? It seems some of the high rank sites for keywords like scentcity.com who are using the left side bar like I have and the main page with lots of links to her company sponsored site seem to rank despite all this?? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. x

Linking to related business?
If your working with a local business, is it a good idea to reach out to similar businesses in other states and ask for a link? Example: I own a paint shop in Minnesota, and I reach out to a paint shop in California to see if we want to link to each others site to help our SEO. Because we aren’t in competition with each other wouldn’t this help us both?

.Nofollow and link count
If i use nofollow on links ( internal or external ), will it reduce the link count as regard to Google. If there are 50 external links, and i nofollow 20 of them, will Google count this as 30 external links.

Is this a good link?
Found a .gov link to my website www.kars4kids.org. The url it links to is http://www.nyc.gov/cgi-bin/exit.pl?url=http://www.kars4kids.org/ which does eventually redirect to kars4kids. Will search engines see this as a link?
