Best Way to Incorporate FAQs into Every Page - Duplicate Content?
-
Hi Mozzers,
We want to incorporate a 'Dictionary' of terms onto quite a few pages on our site, similar to an FAQ system.
The 'Dictionary' has 285 terms in it, with about 1 sentence of content for each one (approximately 5,000 words total).
The content is unique to our site and not keyword stuffed, but I am unsure what Google will think about us having all this shared content on these pages.
I have a few ideas about how we can build this, but my higher-ups really want the entire dictionary on every page. Thoughts?

Me too! Where all my mozzers at?

We try to never use them for a few reasons, after talking to our dev team here...
Bad For SEO
Linking/Bookmarks
Difficulty with Debugging
No real performance gainsI would really consider a separate page that may well have some real SEO value with a few good terms and explanations on.
Would like to hear other opinions on this...
-
Another option I am thinking is to include this section in an iFrame, since I know iFrames are not read by search engines.
What do you think about that solution?
-
Ok, i see, it may be more useful to have them as a seperate page, but that is probably a whole different debate and highly subjective.
So what i have looked at is this...
...since there are so many legitimate uses for hiding content with
display: none;
when creating interactive features, that sites aren't automaticallypenalised for content that is hidden this way (so long as it doesn't look algorithmically spammy).Google's Webmaster guidelines also make clear that a good practice when using content that is initially legitimately hidden for interactivity purposes is to also include the same content in a
<noscript></code> tag, and Google recommend that if you design and code for users including users with screen readers or javascript disabled, then 9 times out of 10 good relevant search rankings will follow (though their specific advice seems more written for cases where javascript writes new content to the page).</em></p> <blockquote> <p><em><strong>JavaScript:</strong> Place the same content from the JavaScript in a tag. If you use this method, ensure the contents are exactly the same as what’s contained in the JavaScript, and that this content is shown to visitors who do not have JavaScript enabled in their browser.</em></p> </blockquote> <p><em>So, best practice seems pretty clear.</em></p> <p><em><strong>What I can't find out is</strong>, however, the simple factual matter of whether hidden content is indexed by search engines (but with potential penalties if it looks 'spammy'), or, whether it is ignored, or, whether it is indexed but with a lower weighting (<a href="http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/1685/is-content-inside-a-noscript-tag-indexed-by-search-indexes">like <code><noscript></code> content is, apparently</a>).</em></p> <p>That was from another SEO site, what i would say is that Google doesn't 'penalise' for duplicate content so would it be a disaster to try it, see if it is picked up as dupe and then change if necessary?</p></noscript>

Thanks for the response.
Here is a crude image of what we're thinking - http://screencast.com/t/GkhOktwC4I
The text would be hidden/displayed via javascript, so it would not really affect the user's experience in a negative way.
-
Hi,
How would it be displayed? Wouldn't it be just as useful to have it open in a new window that the user could keep open? If you need to display 250+ words plus a sentence for each then the user would not be able to see the content they are/were interested in.
You could then have a link to it on each page....
Do your 'higher ups' embrace user experience and how it affects people's browsing? Maybe an education job... Good luck!
Not sure if that helped, but just my opinion.

Duplicate content. Competing for rank.
Scenario: An automotive dealer lists cars for sale on their website. The descriptions are very good and in depth at 1,200 words per car. However chunks of the copy are copied from car review websites and weaved into their original copy. Q1: This is flagged in copyscape - how much of an issue is this for Google? Q2: The same stock with the same copy is fed into a popular car listing website - the dealer's website and the classifieds website often rank in the top two positions (sometimes the dealer on top other times the classifieds site). Is this a good or a bad thing? Are you risking being seen as duplicating/scraping content? Thank you.

I'm wondering what's best practise for markup in the nav bar. So if we have <nav> Can we have headers in there, does it help? If we do, would a H1 confuse google as to wether that is the H1 of importance of the one in thein the </nav>

Questions about duplicate photo content?
I know that Google is a mystery, so I am not sure if there are answers to these questions, but I'm going to ask anyway! I recently realized that Google is not happy with duplicate photo content. I'm a photographer and have sold many photos in the past (but retained the rights for) that I am now using on my site. My recent revelations means that I'm now taking down all of these photos. So I've been reverse image searching all of my photos to see if I let anyone else use it first, and in the course of this I found out that there are many of my photos being used by other sites on the web. So my questions are: With photos that I used first and others have stolen, If I edit these photos (to add copyright info) and then re-upload them, will the sites that are using these images then get credit for using the original image first? If I have a photo on another one of my own sites and I take it down, can I safely use that photo on my main site, or will Google retain the knowledge that it's been used somewhere else first? If I sold a photo and it's being used on another site, can I safely use a different photo from the same series that is almost exactly the same? I am unclear what data from the photo Google is matching, and if they can tell the difference between photos that were taken a few seconds apart.

Which is more valuable in a landing page, content or functionality?
I have two possible landing pages to focus off page links and paid ad links to, one page has space for content but basically only serves as a springboard to a map view style listing page. The idea is to use this page full of good content to build search engine value. The map view page is the most functional and is what visitors would ultimately be seeking, but has no real room for content. Are these content landing pages useful? Would it be better to focus on user functionality even though there is no space for content, and would search engines naturally apply for value to these pages? Are these landing pages necessary? The url's in question are http://www.rentcollegepads.com/marquette/search and http://www.rentcollegepads.com/marquette Thanks guys!

Best strategy for duplicate content?
Hi everyone, We have a site where all product pages have more or less similar text (same printing techniques, etc.) The main differences are prices and images, text is highly similar. We have around 150 products in every language. Moz's algorithm tells me to do something about duplicate content, but I don't really know what we could do, since the descriptions can't be changed to be very different. We essentially have paper bags in different colors and and from different materials.

Does duplicate content penalize the whole site or just the pages affected?
I am trying to assess the impact of duplicate content on our e-commerce site and I need to know if the duplicate content is affecting only the pages that contain the dupe content or does it affect the whole site? In Google that is. But of course. Lol

Duplicate content even with 301 redirects
I know this isn't a developer forum but I figure someone will know the answer to this. My site is http://www.stadriemblems.com and I have a 301 redirect in my .htaccess file to redirect all non-www to www and it works great. But SEOmoz seems to think this doesn't apply to my blog, which is located at http://www.stadriemblems.com/blog It doesn't seem to make sense that I'd need to place code in every .htaccess file of every sub-folder. If I do, what code can I use? The weirdest part about this is that the redirecting works just fine; it's just SEOmoz's crawler that doesn't seem to be with the program here. Does this happen to you?

Should we deindex duplicate pages?
I work on an education website. We offer programs that are offered up to 6 times per year. At the moment, we have a webpage for each instance of the program, but that's causing duplicate content issues. We're reworking the pages so the majority of the content will be on one page, but we'll still have to keep the application details as separate pages. 90% of the time, application details are going to be nearly identical, so I'm worried that these pages will still be seen as duplicate content. My question is, should we deindex these pages? We don't particularly want people landing on our application page without seeing the other details of the program anyway. But, is there problem with deindexing such a large chunk of your site that I'm not thinking of? Thanks, everyone!
