Subdomain Robots.txt
-
If I have a subdomain (a blog) that is having tags and categories indexed when they should not be, because they are creating duplicate content. Can I block them using a robots.txt file? Can I/do I need to have a separate robots file for my subdomain?
If so, how would I format it? Do I need to specify that it is a subdomain robots file, or will the search engines automatically pick this up?
Thanks!

Thanks Wissam. I was thinking this was the way to go, and I appreciate your input.
I do use the Yoast SEO plugin for Wordpress on another site, but the blog in question is through BlogEngine. I will do what you have suggested.
Cheers!

if the url is http://blog.website.com
then the Robots.txt should be accessable threw http://blog.website.com/robots.txt
I would suggest these steps
- Verify your blog the Google webmaster tools
- generate a robots .txt file with Google webmaster tools
- Upload it to the Subdomain.
There is another way if you are using Wordpress.
There is a All in One SEO plugin / Wordpress SEO by Yoast. threw the settings you can specify to add NOINDEX to all Category, tags, author and others. its faster and error free.

Should I block Map pages with robots.txt?
Hello, I have a website that was started in 1999. On the website I have map pages for each of the offices listed on my site, for which there are about 120. Each of the 120 maps is in a whole separate html page. There is no content in the page other than the map. I know all of the offices love having the map pages so I don't want to remove the pages. So, my question is would these pages with no real content be hurting the rankings of the other pages on our site? Therefore, should I block the pages with my robots.txt? Would I also have to remove these pages (in webmaster tools?) from Google for blocking by robots.txt to really work? I appreciate your feedback, thanks!

Google Indexing Development Site Despite Robots.txt Block
Hi, A development site that has been set-up has the following Robots.txt file: User-agent: * Disallow: / In an attempt to block Google indexing the site, however this isn't the case and the development site has since been indexed. Any clues why this is or what I could do to resolve it? Thanks!

Is having no robots.txt file the same as having one and allowing all agents?
The site I am working on currently has no robots.txt file. However, I have just uploaded a sitemap and would like to point the robots.txt file to it. Once I upload the robots.txt file, if I allow access to all agents, is this the same as when the site had no robots.txt file at all; do I need to specify crawler access on can the robots.txt file just contain the link to the sitemap?

Quick robots.txt check
We're working on an SEO update for http://www.gear-zone.co.uk at the moment, and I was wondering if someone could take a quick look at the new robots file (http://gearzone.affinitynewmedia.com/robots.txt) to make sure we haven't missed anything? Thanks
