Can this be done?

Hi,
Suppose, a page from Wikipedia ranks on 1st position in Google for "keyphrase1". But when you investigate further, there are no backlinks to that page that have "keyphrase1" as the anchor text. Then how come the page ranks for that keyphrase?

Thanks guys! I used your responses to test few other keywords and the results are similar. It is really not the backlinks alone. Surprisingly, for one my tests, only quality content and keyword competitiveness did the trick as i had no backlink for the page except 2 internal links (Wikipedia).

The anchor text in a link is just one of many ranking factors so keywords often rank at number 1 if they contain no backlinks with the same anchor text. Also, anchor text isn't as important a ranking factor as it once was as it was abused, and it doesn't have to be exact match keywords either e.g. "orange men's shoe" could help "orange shoe" to rank and "red automobile" could help "red car" to rank.
Wikipedia pages do so many other things well - in depth content and internal linking being just two. And the site has huge authority of course.

Hi
I have to agree with the above, but because Wikipedia is so big, if you are really after a set of keywords, its actually pretty easy to rank above them.
You just need to make sure your content is high quality, unique and is more useful to searcher.
Again its back to the simple technique of creating, good unique content that helps the user.
Thanks
Andy

Hi,
Websites or web properties like Wikipedia do not need a single backlink to rank at the top position for keyword or a phrase. Its the quality of their content that plays a crucial role along with a huge domain authority. Of course, it also matters how competitive the keyword in question is.
By the way, no link profile analysis tool or all those tools put together on this planet can give you the complete list of backlinks and there might be many backlinks that Google would have found and considered for ranking that were not reported by any of the other link profile analysis tools out there.
Best,

How have they done that? DA20 site in p2 for very competitive search term
Not sure whether to actually name the term and site in question, but basically it is a very big term for a popular type of home furniture. Since the algo change, there is a site thats appeared in p2, right behind the market leader in google uk. The site has a domain authority of 20, and only 84 links - none of which even have the anchor text in question, and infact well over 90% have the same anchor text which is related but different to the search term. The search term appears on the home page 3 times - once in a 120 character+ keyword stuffed home link title, once in a 100 character+ keyword stuffed h1 tag that isnt even visible on the home page and one in a paragraph that is visible.

The site is badly made and buggy, but its outranking John Lewis, Dunelm Mill etc - very big players in the UK market. How on earth does that work? They are doing so much google tells you not to and winning big rank!? What is Google doing?0 -
How do I find and can I trust link building companies
I'm finding it hard to build quality links. I don't want to employ a link building company as I can't find anyone I can trust. I also don't know what is a realistic rate of pay for link building work.

Where can I go to find the latest links to my domain?
I have checked the link analysis section and looked at link history. I have also checked Open Site Explorer but I can't seem to find a way to just show me the most recent links to my site . . .

Over 47.000 inbound links from one site - can it hurt my rankings?
Im currently having some banner commercials on a relatively large Danish forum. I talked the forum owner into maing the banner "dofollow" so i could get the "juice" from the site, however im in doubt if this is good or bad for my SEO. Webmaster tools is telling me that i now have over 47.000 links from this forum. it seems like a Lot of links considering that i only have external links from about 5 other sites and the fact that my site is quite new. It seems like my site is not ranked very good yet(as mentioned in another question). I hope someone has some input 🙂 Best reguards

Can bad backlinks harm your website?
Hi, This has been discussed to death over the web on many forums, some discussions are even very heated arguing both sides. So... from what I have read on seomoz the answer to this question is... YES. And if one was so inclined to build bad backlinks to a competitor it would have a negative effect. Agree?

Can indirect linking be valuable?
I have a client who is using a SEO company (Hubshout, delete name if necessary) to boost traffic to their website. They are doing this by publishing articles and submitting them to article directories, then they use their own sites/blogs (which are valueless, PR and MozRank of zero) to point to these articles and they say that this helps boost there rankings. How? They are not linking to the clients websites, creating artificial links from their own websites to article directories instead of the clients website. Are they trying to boost the value of the article or trying to boost their own websites? How does this help out the client? It is similar to three way linking but is not.
