Shabaka domain - Impact on SEO
-
Hi All,
I heard about shabaka domain names recently and am not sure if getting a shabaka top-level domain with arabic content help from a SEO stand-point? Currently my Arabic website is on this domain: http://www.tcf-me.ae/
Do you think it is a good idea to get a shabaka domain to target the GCC countries on our Arabic website? Or does it not matter? Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Gianluca,
Thanks a lot for your response.
Yes I meant to say .ae
Our english website is www.tcf-me.com
Our arabic website is www.tcf-me.ae
(From a SEO point of view, do you suggest we keep the arabic version of the website on the same domain name(.com) or use a shabaka domain name for the arabic version to specifically target GCC
Thanks

Hi Layth,
why are you talking of a .me domain name, if it is a .ae one (http://www.tcf-me.ae/)?
Answering your new question, if your intention is targeting arabic speaking people in a region like GCC, which - as the Eurozone or Asia or Latin America - cannot be geo-targeted, then the ideal should be using a generic domain name termination, because of the limitation and added efforts a country code level domain name needs for obtaining the same results.
So... if not classic generic termination (I mean .com or .net) is available, then you think about using the new domain termination .shabaka.
I repeat it: not just because you are using that new termination your site will rank better or will tank. Success or failure will depend by other things, classic tech SEO factors, web relevancy and popularity.

Hi Gianluca
Thanks for your response.
So basically you suggest that I redirect my current .me website to shabaka domain or completely take down the .me domain?
The intention here is to target arabic speaking population in the GCC region..
Thanks

Hi Layth,
your doubts are not so different from the ones we - using western languages - have with the new domain terminations.
Sincerely, I am not at all convinced that domain terminations play a role in SEO at all, apart certain very specific cases, when Matt Cutts explicitly told that the webspam team usually associates some terminations to spam activities (i.e.: .cc, .tk or even .info).
With all this, what I am saying is that domain termination like .shabaka, .web, .marketing or whatever of the many new ones can work or not depending on the fact that the website associated is:
- technically optimized;
- have content that offers value to its targetet audience;
- have a solid digital promotion strategy sustaining its visibility.
As you can see, things that are a must for every web site independently from its domain termination.
The only real consideration I'd do is if the Saudi Arabian ccTLD was somehow impeding me to better perform outside of Google.ae, or, in other words, if I wanted to reach arabian speaking people globally.
In that case, maybe, using the .shabaka domain termination could be an option, as it is a generic domain name, hence is not automatically geo-targeting Saudi Arabia only, but it can be set to target the global market via Google Webmaster Tools.
Not that an .ae domain cannot achieve the same results, but it is known that territorial domain names struggle more than generic in obtaining organic visibility, so that they need more link building/earning efforts and gain a strong authority for "breaking" the geo-targeting barrier.

Multi National Company that Doesn't Want to Implement International SEO
I have got an interesting situation where I have a client who wants to merge two ccTLD's into one. They currently have .fi and .com and they want to merge both sites to .com .fi is for finland and .com for USA. They want to merge the sites and the original plan was to use subfolders for each country and pair with hreflang. However the team now wants to merge both sites with NO subfolders differentiating between finland or the US. My understanding of International SEO that this is the most opposite from best practices, but is there any specific reasons why they wouldn't want to do this? I'm struggling to find any specific reasons that I can cite to the client that would argue why we should at least do a subfolder or some sort of international seo strategy.

Is this hurting our SEO: company1.uk.com, company1.ru.com, company1.de.com, etc...?
Hello I work for a company which is using this kind of subdomains, that look like domains such as company1.uk.com, company1.ru.com, company1.de.com, but they are obviously not. We also own company1.com where the main site in English lies. We are one of the leader portals in one financial sector, and I am wondering if our SEO can be hurted by these fake "domains". I understand that we get some effect from the other domains hosted under this domain, and they are probably not as high quality as ours and they are probably unrelated. **- Would you recommend us to stop using these and use subdomains? So change: "company1.de.com" and use "de.company1.com" instead? Should we expect an increase in traffic after this change?** Any help will be appreciated.

International SEO | URL Structure
I'm looking for advice/point of view for setting up international domains. I.e. sub-domains, ccTLD, etc. At the 10,000 ft. view - the client (international retail company) is trying to decide which type of URL structure to use in their new platform: Option 1: Root Domain ccTLD - www.brand.ca, www.brand.fr, etc. Option 2: Subdomains - fr.brand.com, ca.brand.com, au.brand.com Option 3: Subfolders - ]www.brand.com/ca/, ]www.brand.com/au/ Consider these scenarios/questions and use to help decide which URL structure makes sense: 1) I'm an Aussie in Australia and I do a Google search on Hank Myer Aron, which is a huge seller in the U.S. and also included at the Australia locale site. If we go with subfolders, am I likely to see the U.S. Aron page higher in my search results than the Australia Aron page? Or is the U.S. site not a factor in a search done outside the U.S.? If we use subfolders AND geo-detection, does this bump the ranking of the locale page? Do sites using ccTLDs always get ranked above those that don't? For example, if an Australian dealer selling Aron has URLs dealer.com.au/..., would their pages rank ahead of hankmyer.com/au/...? If we went the ccTLD route, would the Aron page at hankmyer.com.au take precedence over the U.S. page? (Again, assuming U.S. site is relevant in this scenario.) 2) I'm a Frenchman in France searching on Hank Myer Aron. If we use subfolders AND an alias URL that's translated to French (brand.com/fr/produits/sieges/sieges-aron), would we expect the page rank to be comparable to using the ccTLD and/or expect greater trust than just using subfolders without translated URLs? Do translated URLs have any mitigating affect on duplicate page content? Which URL strategy is best choice from a SEO standpont?

Looking for content writers for multi-language SEO
Hi All, I'm currently doing a lot of work for a UK client who has multiple sites outside the UK (all part of the same business). We're currently discussing the option of us handling all of his SEO for his German, French, Spanish and Italian sites too, but we only have access to one person in the office who can speak French and Spanish. They're currently booked up on other jobs that we can't really move them off, so I'm looking for options of outsourcing some of the content writing. My question is, does anyone know of any high quality content writing services that have writers available to write for the countries languages above? We're going to focus initially on their on-site strategy and building up their high quality content. At the moment, they don't have much relevant content on their website, so we're going to initially look at this. Moving forward, we'll be looking at their off-site strategy and trying to find areas to submit high quality articles, look at guest blogging and PR opportunities. Any tips anyone has on this side (in terms of outsourcing to native speakers) would be quite useful too! Many thanks,

Does IP filtering have a negative impact on SEO?
If a large site has multiple regions (Australia, USA, UK, France), how will IP filtering to a particular area affect SEO. e.g: Ilive in the UK an if I visit the said website I would automatically be redirected to the UK subfolder of the site whereas somebody searching in Australia would be redirected to the AUS folder. Will there be any detrimental affect on SEO and will the search engines still be able to crawl the entire site no matter which data centre is being used?
