Wordpress 404 Errors
-
Hi Guys,
One of my clients is scratching his head after a site migration. He has moved to wordpress and now GWT is creating weird and wonderful strange 404 errors. For example
http://www.allsee-tech.com/digital-signage-blog/category/clients.html
There are loads like the above which seem to be made up out of his blog and navigation http://www.allsee-tech.com/clients.html works!
Any ideas? Is it a rogue plugin? How do we fix?
Kind Regards
Neil

I just looked at the site and it doesn't appear to be on Wordpress. Is it on wordpress right now?
Is that site on Wordpress?

http://www.allsee-tech.com/digital-signage-blog/category/clients.html
This is a category archive page. Denoted by /category/clients (ignore the extension).
I would go in to the categories of your blog and see if there is a clients category. If you don't want it, then remove the category. It appears your other archives are working fine. It's most likely an erroneous plugin that is reporting a sitemap to Google. You can go in to GWT and review any sitemaps reported on your behalf. If there is none, then it's not a plugin but one of two other possibilities. WP has a ping setting inside of the admin dashboard. It is probably set to ping a ping syndicator like pingomatic which is pinging google ( https://wordpress.org/support/topic/google-blog-pinging ). At some point you had a category with a post in it in that category and google was pinged and found a 404. If this is the case it will go away. The last possibility is that somewhere either externally or internally there is a link to that url and google is indexing it. If that is the case you are going to have to 301 it to a legit location.

Hi Neil
Has this been now resolved? I've tried crawling the site a whole bunch of ways and am not turning up any 404s at all. It's also possible the errors in webmaster tools were old. Did you try "marking as fixed" and see if they come back?
-
It looks like it is spinning off 404s based on your main site's html pages (which is not in wordpress right?) which makes it look like not so much a wordpress problem as a linking problem. The blog is using relative urls (like this: ../../../../../clients.html) in its header and footer links back to the main site. This can potentially cause problems and even though in a browser the links all seem to be working fine the 404 you mention looks like it could be created by this setup. I would put absolute urls in the main menu and footer links and see if that clears up the 404s.

Adding to Hutch 24 I have fund that all in 1 seo plugin by Michael Torbert is very powerful plugin which could be of assistance

I would recommend getting Yoast SEO for Wordpress, then in the Yoast options for XML sitemap under taxonomies tell it to exclude Categories. Most likely after the migration somewhere an option that creates or references pages based on categories and/or tags was left on. You can simple exclude these pages from your sitemap while you check your other plug-ins and settings to make sure that one of them is not trying to reference these pages which have been turned off.

Wordpress SEO for ecommerce store
I have been working on a wordpress ecommerce website and want to check that I am doing something correctly so hope someone can help. The Wordpress theme did not allow for an introductory content so the developer built a content page Instead to work as a front end category page so there was more flexibility. I have set the product categories to follow- no index and set the content page as the canonical version and optimised the content page.. question is - is that the right thing to do?

Structured markup for wordpress
Hello, I am having problems with marking up my WP posts. I used the All-in-One which seems to be the most user-friendly, except when I denote the aspects of the "article" and update, the markup shows up as a box at the bottom of the post (even though the info is in the text). How do I mark these up for Google without having the unseemly box at the bottom? Thanks so much in advance for any help! Btw, I am not altogether comfortable just yet on manual schematic markup (if you have a really basic manual markup that will let me do so across various platforms, I would also appreciate the recommendation). Thanks!

Wordpress vs. home grown directory
I just moved my blog from a wordpress hosted solution to my owner server and am really hopeful that all the SEO ready wordpress pages plus I downloaded Yoast SEO will move my site. I started with 9000 pages being moz indexed with tons of errors eyerywhere, I have almost fixed everything getting ready to do a google index. One question. I have a directory of businesses and events for my local mountain community that is home grown with about 200 pages. see here: http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/bigbeardirectory.aspx which has a PA of 21 which is the same as my DA 21 (I know terrible)... Should I migrate these 200 pages with images to wordpress to take advantage of all the nice SEO possibilities? I have staff and it would probably take about $600 bucks to do it. I would only have to put about ten 301's such as http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/contentcat.aspx?ParentID=7 would be http://www.destinationbigbear.com/big-bear-restaurants/ Thank you again to all, I am hopeful I can answer some questions in the future for people... I am learning alot! Nick

404 Error
Hello, Seomoz flagged a url as having a 404 client error. The reason the link doesn't return a proper content page is because the url name was changed. What should we do? Will this error disappear when Google indexes our site again? Or is there some way to manually eliminate it? Thanks!

Crawl Errors In Webmaster Tools
Hi Guys, Searched the web in an answer to the importance of crawl errors in Webmaster tools but keep coming up with different answers. I have been working on a clients site for the last two months and (just completed one months of link bulding), however seems I have inherited issues I wasn't aware of from the previous guy that did the site. The site is currently at page 6 for the keyphrase 'boiler spares' with a keyword rich domain and a good onpage plan. Over the last couple of weeks he has been as high as page 4, only to be pushed back to page 8 and now settled at page 6. The only issue I can seem to find with the site in webmaster tools is crawl errors here are the stats:- In sitemaps : 123 Not Found : 2,079 Restricted by robots.txt 1 Unreachable: 2 I have read that ecommerce sites can often give off false negatives in terms of crawl errors from Google, however, these not found crawl errors are being linked from pages within the site. How have others solved the issue of crawl errors on ecommerce sites? could this be the reason for the bouncing round in the rankings or is it just a competitive niche and I need to be patient? Kind Regards Neil
