WWW to Non-WWW = Less Indexing?
-
Hi all,
About 10 months ago we changed all of our urls to redirect to a non-www vs. the www because it was creating both iterations and therefore duplicate content.
We didn't change anything in Webmaster Tools and it looks like our indexing went down significantly. Is this a problem? How can I fix it? *It looks like GWT also went through an update at that time?

If both the www. and non-www. URLs were being indexed - creating duplicates for nearly every page on your website - then the significant drop in number of pages indexed makes sense.

Hi Becky,
How did you do the redirects?
Did you generate a new sitemap?
Is there anything that would block crawling the non www version?
Do you still have www links on any of your pages? (typically this isn't an issue because most people use relative linking but figured I'd ask).
A quick note www. and non www are considered two different sites just as http and https are.
Hope to help
Don

Removing indexed pages
Hi all, this is my first post so be kind 🙂 - I have a one page Wordpress site that has the Yoast plugin installed. Unfortunately, when I first submitted the site's XML sitemap to the Google Search Console, I didn't check the Yoast settings and it submitted some example files from a theme demo I was using. These got indexed, which is a pain, so now I am trying to remove them. Originally I did a bunch of 301's but that didn't remove them from (at least not after about a month) - so now I have set up 410's - These also seem to not be working and I am wondering if it is because I re-submitted the sitemap with only the index page on it (as it is just a single page site) could that have now stopped Google indexing the original pages to actually see the 410's?

Pages to be indexed in Google
Hi, We have 70K posts in our site but Google has scanned 500K pages and these extra pages are category pages or User profile pages. Each category has a page and each user has a page. When we have 90K users so Google has indexed 90K pages of users alone. My question is. Should we leave it as they are or should we block them from being indexed? As we get unwanted landings to the pages and huge bounce rate. If we need to remove what needs to be done? Robots block or Noindex/Nofollow Regards

Should I put meta descriptions on pages that are not indexed?
I have multiple pages that I do not want to be indexed (and they are currently not indexed, so that's great). They don't have meta descriptions on them and I'm wondering if it's worth my time to go in and insert them, since they should hypothetically never be shown. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks! The reason this is a question is because one member of our team was linking to this page through Facebook to send people to it and noticed random text on the page being pulled in as the description.

Instant Indexing
I've been working on a site for a while now, methodically building content and building trust and authority. Lately I've noticed that anything I publish there appears to be instantly indexed by Google, which surprises me. I haven't had this happen before so I'm curious. I'd be interested to hear the experience of others.

Is z-indexing a black-hat trick?
I use z-indexing for a floating bar that scrolls vertically along the side of my page. I'm not hiding anything. Is this safe or not?

Weird Indexing Question
Google has indexed mysite.com/ and mysitem.com/\/ (no idea why). If you click on the /%5C? URL it takes you to mysite.com//. I have a rel=canonical tag on it that goes to mysite.com/ but I was wondering if there was another way to correct the issue.
