Ecommerce site product link. How to handle a link that doesn't exist.
-
Suppose we have this product A, and we just have a single item for this. When the item is sold out we do not want to show it on the website saying "out of stock". Instead we would like to remove the product from out store which will now result in a url that doesn't exist.
And google webmaster tool and Moz analytic will show them as page not found after they crawl over the site. Should i be generating a new sitemap.xml and update ?
How do i handle those pages that don't exist anymore ?
Thanks

Hi,
So you have a few options.
1. Create a non-product page that list similar items and an no-longer available. This gives the users a notice they arrived at the right page but were too late. Along with actionable options it may convert into sales of similar items.
2. 301 the url to the parent category, this is a flat out redirect and maybe the easiest to setup but I don't like the user experience it provides, it does give the benefit of passing the link juice back to the parent.
3. Meta Tag NoIndex this is a pretty much a search engine only fix, it doesn't pass the link juice anywhere but prevents errors from getting to search engines and crawlers.
You can read more about my thoughts and some other opinions on a similar question posted last week here:
I hope this helps and good luck,
Don

Site property is verified for new version of search console, but same property is unverified in the old version
Hi all! This is a weird one that I've never encountered before. So basically, an admin granted me search console access as an "owner" to the site in search console, and everything worked fine. I inspected some URL's with the new tool and had access to everything. Then, when I realized I had to remove certain pages from the index it directed me to the old search console, as there's no tool for that yet in the new version. However, the old version doesn't even list the site under the "property" dropdown as either verified or unverified, and if I try to add it it makes me undergo the verification process, which fails (I also have analytics and GTM access, so verification shouldn't fail). Has anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas for a fix? Thanks so much for any help!

How do sites without access to a site's analytical data, determine a site's organic traffic?
I've recently used a organic traffic checker that showed you your traffic compared to each google algo update. I was interested in how they derived the organic traffic totals for each month, without having access to our site's google analytics? I've since compared the data to historical google analytics data and it's not wrong, isn't 100% match either but isn't far from fact. So if they're predicting or making a guess, it's rather spot on, site crawlers and SERPs snapshots only provide so much info, I'm just wondering where they get the rest from and how?

What are all the 5's in SEO Queries in Analytics?
Every small business client has the same thing. 5 impressions for keywords, row after row, every single month. Why exactly 5 and why month after month the same thing? I see this in every local business I work in - and for very important phrases! It's gotten to the point that I think those are fake and I just look at the impressions that have numbers great than 5. Obviously I have to get their impressions up, but what am I to believe about these?

Best way to handle ignored Rel=Canonical?
My Google Analytics is reporting organic traffic for URL's with a QueryString attached, even though there's a Canonical tag that points to the preferred (non-QueryStringed) version. Would the best way to handle this be the GWT URL Parameters Tool? I'm fairly unfamiliar with the tool, but after some research, it looks like this might be the best way to go. Does anyone have any good/bad advice for using the tool? Thanks!

What's the problem with this code for Google Analytics
Hello, I'm using this code in my thank you page to track ecommerce sales in GA. The problem that I'm having is that in the google event the _trackPageview doesn't register the proper page but puts the url of the ecommerce website. The transaction is properly tracked. Any ideas of what could be the issue looking at this code? Maybe there could be other code could be causing the problem? Thanks a lot.
