Followed Links from random forums, is it worth?
-
I have a competitor that apeears first place in Google with a certain keyword, i explore their site, and they have a lots of forums poiting to their page.
What they do is, just go to a random forum, comment some threat and they put the anchor in sig, with that keyword, linking to their page.
Well, from what i read in SEOmoz articles, Google its no supose to penalyze this pages? Because thoose are pages (forums) that dont have nothing to do -subject- with the page that apears in first place?
Its a good practise? Should i do the same (x2) to get the first place in google?
(Sorry for my English)
Thank you.

Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded our Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory update and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

Thank you very much guys!
What about the directories? Its bad to my site be on a directory, or Google knows automaticly that my link is on a directory website and will not penalise for this? (becasue the subject of the pages arent the same)

If there is one thing I have learnt it is to steer well clear of anything that is not completely white-hat (ethical) because Google pops up now and then and surprises everyone - Look at the recent changes with 'Panda' and the sites they are going after there!
There is no long term substitute for a well designed site with fresh, unique content that is easy for visitors and search engines to navigate.

Andy

Hi Tiago,
All public statements by Google and by white hat SEOs are going to call this a dirty, worthless tactic.
The reality is, many dirty tactics still work - and this is one of them.
Glen Allsopp from Viper Chill, by any definition a successful affiliate marketer whose central strategy is SEO, touts a tool called Bookmarketing Demon as one of his secrets to success. The tool automates the social bookmarketing process, creating many low-value links with very little hands-on work. And it works, according to Glen.
[Edit: I should say it works for sites in low-competition verticals. You're not going to rank for competitive keywords with these links.]
Now, the question to ask yourself is this: how important is my website to me?
There is risk here. Google may burn your site. How likely is that? Hard to say. But if they do, and the site represents your core business, you're in trouble. If it's a thin affiliate site you can live with losing, that's another story.
Personally, I stay away from these tactics - but I'm not riding on a high horse. Moreso my SEO work has always dealt with properties I couldn't afford to risk.
You're going to see more tactics like this working for competitors. Link buying, for example, is still massively successful for many organizations. J.C. Penney was just "outed" for this, but they're a big, visible company. Many of the mid and low-level properties have been profiting for years off a link-buying strategy.
Google will never squash all of these sneaky tricks (there will always be loopholes), but they always catch a few and penalize the ass out of them. Unless you're prepared for the possibility that you'll be the one they catch, I don't think it's worth the risk.

Well, A strict No No there on that practice. Your competitor would have issues in the long run. It seems quite easy to get folks to comment and it is aimed at "gaming" the google ranking algorithms. That practice would surely fall prey to Google webspam team one day. Its best not to tread that path at all. (by the way, Mattcutts- head of Google webspam, is one of seomoz's users...hope he gets to read this post and suggest algorithmic changes)

Gained a number of new 'do-follow' links - Good or Bad?
So, my client's site is on a subdomain of the parent site and there were a number of links previously pointing to the subdomain site from the main site which were all no-follow so were purely for referral/traffic benefits. Around the end of February, the main site changed all the links to 'do-follow'. Is this likely to have caused the decline we've recently seen in organic traffic to the site and a drop in rankings? I'm curious as to how that could have affected the site as we didn't know and have only just found out about it but I'm not sure how to show that it's led to a decline. Any help is appreciated!

GWT Lists URLs with links to my site, but those URLs don't have links to my site
There are a number of URLs that show up for my website in Webmaster Tools as having links to my site when in fact they don't. I know this to be a fact because I actually wrote some of the sites that Google is saying are linking to my site and I know there isn't any links on the specific pages to that site. For example, the site in question is: https://www.liftproducts.com/ As an example, Google is saying that about 100 URLs from https://www.lift-tables.net/ are linking to it when, I'm fairly confident that there is only 1 link to it found here: https://www.lift-tables.net/info.php?countrytabs=3 Yet Google says links exist on this (and many more) page: https://www.lift-tables.net/liftproducts/max-lift/lpt4w-030-48.php I thought at first it might have been due to linking to a image file directly instead of locally hosting it, but after checking the source, that's not the case. I am also seeing this type of non-linking being reported on sites I have no clue what they are. For example, some Spanish site about tandem bicycles is being listed as linking to liftproducts.com: http://206-225-85-34.dedicated.abac.net/tandem/inc Yet I can find no evidence of an actual link existing. Am I missing something here? Any insight of why this is happening and how I can clean up my link signature would be appreciated.

2. Header links are less, Footer links are less, and in the future, we are planning to add more, will this affect SEO more than 100
i see many ecommerce sites, has menu showing many categories, more 100 categories links
3. Wht about link equity? If I have more links in header and footer page(all this will follow in the rest of pages).
4. More links in the header and footer shows that you are big ecommerce site.. Pls suggest, which is right way and go gain SEO value1 -
Reciprocol Links
Am I correct in stating that linking to every article about your company is a bad idea. I see a lot of sites with followed links to the articles that link to them. Is this not devaluing the link? I've been recommending removing the links or no indexing the page and no following the links. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Why does Open Site Explorer list SEOMOZ forum links so high ?
When I was checking my back links in Open Sight Explorer I was surprised to see that because I have asked three questions recently here on the forum about my business website www.endeavourcottage.co.uk and they are now listed near the position 3 to 5 Of course I was not putting my business website link on their with the motivation of gaining some SEO benefits but when you get these no follow links do they have any usefulness in that direction? I read that say no follow links have no link juice so is any beneficial aspects? I It wouldn't be the ideal situation to encourage that kind of activity, but if they have no value at all why does Open Site Explorer list them? seo.JPG

How many nofollow links should we build to have a natural link profile
Hi guys, As with many link builders we have been building lots of dofollow links for our site, so many that mainly our incoming links are dofollow. Some pages have 99.5% dofollow external links which I know is not very natural. In your experience in terms of percentage how much should you have in terms of nofollow external links in your link profile. I noticed SEOMoz has about 12-13% nofollow external links, shall I go with this figure? Thanks guys. David
