HELP! How do I stop scraper sites - is there any recourse?
-
Our site has lots of unique content and photos and it is constantly being scraped and posted on other websites. Most of these are no-name sites that pop up and exist for adwords revenue.
Aside from the fact that we don't want our content being copied, this is an SEO nightmare because they often link back to us from pages that are stuffed with keywords and have very low domain authority (it's a form of negative SEO).
My question is:
Does anyone have experience with fighting this phenonmenon?
What have you done that is effective?
Does anyone have experience with a service such as http://www.dmca.com/ProtectionPro.aspx ? Does it work/is it worth it?
Any input is appreciated!

Nice link Mark. News to me, really. But the fact that Schema.org and HTML5 both have author identification methods shows that it may be used by other search engines and/or services. And the followup article to your link there is "Google Authorship May Be Dead, But Author Rank Is Not." http://searchengineland.com/google-authorship-dead-author-rank-202254
But darn, man! All that time wasted getting authorship to work back then. Google's authorship verification process was indeed grueling.
-
I agree with everything besides for the authorship markup bit. Authorship markup is not being tracked by Google anymore - see http://searchengineland.com/goodbye-google-authorship-201975.
That said, the larger point about being the first content to go up is a good one. If we can all figure out where the original is from, assume that Google can too.
-
Kevin has a really good point here. You need to input markup that tells Google that the content is yours. I find that adding self-referential canonical tags can help with this. Just be careful to input them correctly.

Two schools on that one. They may not be hurting your business now, so you can forget about them. That's only until you can't. If they continue rip off your work, they may take from you in the future--ad revenue, traffic stats, e-commerce, news reports, whatever you're doing--that's all money. If I had time to fill out the form, I'd do it.
-
First thing to do is insert authorship markup and check that google recognizes you as an author of the site you're posting to. There is something to say for original content, and Google knows. If your content goes up first and is indexed first by Google, chance are you're going to rank better than the scrapper sites.
If these sites really bother you, you can submit a Copyright Removal form here https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dmca-notice, but a legal order to remove the content would be better (acted upon faster). Filing copyright infringement reports for eBay listings was very effective for me, but my experience with Google is limited. Let us know if you do file and how the process goes.
Generally speaking, it's actually pretty good that site are linking to your posts. If you are extremely uncomfortable with any particular site's backlink(s), you can use the GWT Disavow tool https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487/?hl=en&authuser=1
Good luck, and let us know what you do.
-
Yes agreed but if you are seeing that scrapers sites outrank your sites in SERPs in that case you should fill the form.
Thanks
-
Thanks for the reassuring response, Alick.
Based on what you're saying (and that post from Niel Patel) it's a waste of time to even fill out Google form (these sites are not outranking us). Agree?
-
Hi ,
First let Google know about this by using this form @ https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Pw1KVOVRyr4a7ezj_6SHghnX1Y6bp1SOVmy60QjkF0Y/viewform
Second I would like to tell you that its myth that scrapers will hurt your Site. Scrapers don’t help or hurt you. Do you think that a little blog in Asia with no original writing and no visitors confuses Google? No. It just isn’t relevant.

Can anyone help me diagnose an indexing/sitemap issue on a large e-commerce site?
Hey guys. Wondering if someone can help diagnose a problem for me. Here's our site: https://www.flagandbanner.com/ We have a fairly large e-commerce site--roughly 23,000 urls according to crawls using both Moz and Screaming Frog. I have created an XML sitemap (using SF) and uploading to Webmaster Tools. WMT is only showing about 2,500 urls indexed. Further, WMT is showing that Google is indexing only about 1/2 (approx. 11,000) of the urls. Finally (to add even more confusion), when doing a site search on Google (site:) it's only showing about 5,400 urls found. The numbers are all over the place! Here's the robots.txt file: User-agent: *

How are these sites ranking!?!
One of our clients is in the insurance industry and over the last 12 months we have seen an increasing number of low quality, newly registered, spammy sites achieving top 5 rankings for major keywords, which in turn is having an adverse effect on the rankings for our client. Does anyone have any idea how the following sites have managed to do this: http://www.multiquotetaxi.co.uk/ - 2nd for taxi insurance http://www.motortradefast.co.uk/ - 1st for motor trade insurance http://www.traders-insurance.com/ - 3rd for motor trade insurance http://www.multiquotefleet.co.uk/ - 1st for fleet insurance We have tried reporting the above sites, tried holding out to see if they get penalised and tried figuring out what they have done ourselves but cannot see how they have managed it. Any ideas at all?

Need help on SEO for my site. Can't figure out what is wrong.
My site, findyogi.com, isn't ranking well in google SERPs. Sample Keyword- "Samsung galaxy s4 price in india" . Matching page - www.findyogi.com/mobiles/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s4-b94a37/price Please help.

Things to remember when relaunching a site
We're about to re-launch our site but to think of everything before going live in a week is pretty tough going. Any suggestions or reminders as to what to remember and take care of before going live? What have you found or forgotten in your experience with re-launches? Thanks, Dave

Niche sites: how to optimize them?
Dear SEOmozzers, I am focusing on those keywords I find using the "Keyword Analysis" tool that are not too competitive (among 20%-30% competitiveness). I then buy domains that include those keywords. The sites are in Italian and targeting the Italian search engines, so the competition is lower than it would be in the US. Basically, I'd like to build niche sites and I'd like to ask a few questions that I hope somebody with a good experience in this field can answer: How do I optimize a niche site. Specifically, how do I go about link building? How many backlinks should I get to see some results? How long does it take for a typical niche site to start appearing in the search engines for a certain keyword, after launching an effective link building campaign? Please kindly provide any recommendations you believe to be important when building niche sites. For example, is there a company/professional you know that specializes in this field and who is trustworthy/reliable? Thank you very much for your help. All best, Sal

2 sites or one sites: 2 locations
Hello, I have a dog training client who is offering services in 2 separate locations. We're looking to be first in the non-local search results and also rank well in google places. Would it be better to go for 2 separate sites or one site and try to rank for 2 different locations with one site? There's both local and standard search results when we type in our keywords. Thanks!

Need help identifying why my content rich site was hurt by the Panda Update.
Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4) which has been heavily impacted by the Panda update. Honestly I have no idea why my Google rankings dropped off. I've hired 2 different SEO experts to look into it and no one has been able to figure it out. My link profile is totally white hat and stronger then the majority of my competitors, I have 4000+ or so pages of unique, high quality content, am a Google News source, and publish about 5 new unique articles every day. I ended up deleting a 100 or so thin video pages on my site, did some url reorganization (using 301s), and fixed all the broken links. That appeared to be helping as my traffic was returning to normal. Then the bottom dropped out again. Since Saturday my daily traffic has dropped by 50%. I am really baffled at this point as to what to do so any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Mike jamescrayton2003@yahoo.com
