Why would I suddenly start seeing a spike in hits from particular bots (specifically rogerbot, google, bing, and yahoo)?
-
We have seen consistent network traffic over the past month, then starting yesterday, huge spikes in hits (hits as in crawls to pages causing an increase in megabytes downloaded) started coming in from Rogerbot, Google, Bing, and Yahoo. A specific example from Rogerbot is as follows:
-
rogerbot/1.1+(http://moz.com/help/guides/search-overview/crawl-diagnostics#more-help,+rogerbot-crawler+pr2-crawler-104@moz.com)
-
Useragent from the bot
-
IP address: 54.226.73.52
-
Domain / hostname: ec2-54-226-73-52.compute-1.amazonaws.com
-
Physical location: United States flag United States, VA, Ashburn
We've have thought about doing a crawl-delay to prevent these bots from hitting us so hard, but that still doesn't help us answer why this even started in the first place.
Any clue on what may be going on here?

-
Hi Kasy, did you get to the bottom of this?
-
- No changes yet; however, it's getting worse on our end, particularly from Yahoo, so we're about to update it to add a line for crawl-delay.
- No known changes have been made with any of these.
- No changes have been made to any of our canonical or noindex tags.
- No, everything is the same.
- The only one that we have consistently crawl the site is Moz. I'm familiar with the other tools, but I haven't used them lately to crawl the site.
-
Hi Kasy, sorry to check the obvious first...
- Have there been any updates to your robots.txt file?
- Have you updated sitemaps? In Robots.txt or Google webmaster tools?
- Have you changed any meta information like canonical tags, noindex tags
- Have you changed any internal links from no-follow to follow?
- Have you got any tools regularly set up to crawl your site as Googlebot? Moz, Screaming Frog, DeepCrawl, Xenu etc.
-
Nothing unusual in any of those areas. GA is normal too. The hits/bots did come all at the same time, but since it started, it's been consistent.
-
Anything strange in your link profile or in your social media profile. Did the hits/bots come all at the same time or are spread evenly within 24 hrs?

Can google bots read my internal post links if they are all listed in a javascript accordian where I list my sources?
I post a JavaScript accordion drop down tab [ a collapsible content area ] at the end of all my posts. I labeled the accordion "Show Article Sources"., and when a user clicks it, then the accordion expands open and it shows all the sources I listed for my article. And this is where I post all of my articles links that I reference per each article. But I read somewhere that google crawlers can not read text in a drop down JavaScript tab. So I am wondering now if this is true because that would mean I have no internal linking SEO going on since it cant read the links? ..... if it is true, then I should remove the accordion from all my articles and some how include the links I reference in the actual body text so I can get SEO benefits from external linking similar content? If that's true, what is an aesthetic way to do this, any example links? Tips ? Thoughts ?

When you go to our website from there, the homepage url is http://www.wheelchairparts.com/store/pc/home.asp it only has 3 root domain links & PA 27. Do I need to add a 301 Redirect here? What kind of redirect is on it now? Thanks, - Mike Bean

Problem with Google SERPS
I am running yoast SEO plugin in WP. I just noticed when I google the client, none of their meta data is showing. I see that I had facebook OG clicked, which looks like it made duplicates of all the titles etc. Would that be the problem? I have since turned it off. I am hoping that was the problem. Also, when the client searches it says in the meta desc - you've viewed this site many times". What is that?

Site being indexed by Google before it has launched
We are currently coming towards the end of a site migration, and are at the final stage of testing redirects etc. However, to our horror we've just discovered Google has started indexing the new site. Any ideas on how this could have happened? I have most recently asked for robots.txt to exclude anything with a certain parameter in URL. Is there a chance this, wrongly implemented, could have caused this?

Country Specific Domains
Is there any type of "best practice" for country level domains? I run a TLD .com, and have a few country specific domains (.co.uk, .eu, ...). Right now, I'm not doing anything with them. Previously, I had them redirected to the main .com, but didn't want to anger the Google gods with any type of duplicate content, redirects, or anything of that nature. Any suggestions on how to best utalize these domains?

Sitemaps for Google
In Google Webmaster Central, if a URL is reported in your site map as 404 (Not found), I'm assuming Google will automatically clean it up and that the next time we generate a sitemap, it won't include the 404 URL. Is this true? Do we need to comb through our sitemap files and remove the 404 pages Google finds, our will it "automagically" be cleaned up by Google's next crawl of our site?
