Mobilegeddon Help - Googlebot Mobile cHTML & Mobile: XHTML/WML
-
Our website is (www.billboard.com) and we have a mobile website on a sub-domain (www.m.billboard.com). We are currently only redirecting Googlebot Type "Mobile: Smartphone" to our m.billboard.com domain. We are not redirecting Googlebot Mobile: cHTML & Mobile: XHTML/WML
Using this URL as an example: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1481451/ravi-shankar-to-receive-lifetime-achievement-grammy, I fetched the URL via Google webmaster tools:
As you can see only the 3rd Googlebot mobile was redirected, while the first 2 Google bot mobile spiders resolved 200 for the desktop page. QUESTION: could this be hurting our domain / any page that is not redirecting properly post mobilegeddon?

As far as I know if your pages pass the "mobile friendly test" - they get the label "mobile friendly". If you check
=> it's considered mobile friendly so it is ok for the mobile update
If you change your user agent to mobile and do a site:billboard.com you can quite easily identify the pages that are not considered mobile friendly (you should see them in WMT as well). If these pages are important in terms of search traffic, you might consider to create a mobile version of these pages as well.
Don't really understand the point of the redirection for the Google bots - your system should normally send all mobile devices to the mobile version. Googlebot will identify itself as mobile device so should be redirected. There is no need to make specific redirects for the bots.
I would try to focus on the performance on your pages - the score from PageSpeed insights is not great (for mobile/desktop) - https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.billboard.com%2F&tab=mobile
Desktop version is loaded in 8sec (http://www.webpagetest.org/result/150429_4Q_15JQ/) - mobile fully loaded in 20sec (http://www.webpagetest.org/result/150429_S8_15QW/) - so there is probably some room for improvement.
Having the mobile friendly label is the first thing, but if your site is slow to load the user experience will not be great and this can impact your rankings for mobile (regardless of the label).
Hope this helps,
Dirk

Mobile website question
Hi Mozzers, A website I manage has a mobile friendly version of their main website and a /m version as well. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in the best way of handling this? Should we just get rid of the /m version and tag the mobile friendly version? Thanks!

URLs with dashes between words or nothing at all? ( ../some-content vs. ../somecontent)
Here's a quick and easy question: Is there any problem with not using dashes in between words for URLs? Obviously the readability factor is a concern, but from a search engine standpoint? Thanks in advance!

Does Having Links on this blog Hurt or Help?
Hello, I created a wordpress blog a while back, http://plastic-bins.com/ If you go into one of the pages on the blog (for example: http://plastic-bins.com/plastic-shelf-bins/ ) you will notice a link after the text/content telling you where you can purchase the stuff that is talked about on that page. There is one link back to the e-commerce site on every category page on the blog. Does anyone know if these links will help me or hurt me in terms of ranking in the SERPS? Thanks

Location Based Content / Googlebot
Our website has local content specialized to specific cities and states. The url structure of this content is as follows: www.root.com/seattle www.root.com/washington When a user comes to a page, we are auto-detecting their IP and sending them directly to the relevant location based page - much the way that Yelp does. Unfortunately, what appears to be occurring is that Google comes in to our site from one of its data centers such as San Jose and is being routed to the San Jose page. When a user does a search for relevant keywords, in the SERPS they are being sent to the location pages that it appears that bots are coming in from. If we turn off the auto geo, we think that Google might crawl our site better, but users would then be show less relevant content on landing. What's the win/win situation here? Also - we also appear to have some odd location/destination pages ranking high in the SERPS. In other words, locations that don't appear to be from one of Google's data center. No idea why this might be happening. Suggestions?

Please help....
Hi Guys! Ok a bit of a funny one here which is causing a confusion between us and a web designer and I was wondering if anyone on here might be able to help. Just a bit of back ground for you, the website has been built on Concrete 5 and when we tried to building a sitemap we found over 110,000 pages. When we spoke to the web designer they have told us that within Google webmaster tools, Google has only indexed 58. But.... (and this is where things get a little confusing, so bare with me.) I thought that cant be right so into the Google search bar I put in site:www.sitename.co.uk and had 217 results appear. So google cant have just 58 pages indexed, right? So after speaking to the designer he then posted on the Concrete 5 help forum, to try and help figure it out. I have posted his exact forum post below that the web designer has asked: I'm having some issues where a site we are working on seems to be making multiple pages going to the same page. An SEO specialist has run a report and found a number of duplicate pages created by C5. We are concerned that this is going to dilute or worse penalise the way google sees the site. http://www.sitename.co.uk/

[http://www.sitename.co.uk/index.php?cID=?akID[155]atSelectOptionID... Is there a way of stopping google from accessing these duplicate 'cID' pages and stop them being made? Also is there a way of getting rid of the ones that are there? We've done a number of sites in C5 and are beginning to get concerned about this... So I guess my question is: If I can access the same content via 4-5 different cID's is that classed as duplicate content? Thanks in advance guys, and any help would greatly appreciated. 🙂0
