Block subdomain directory in robots.txt
-
Instead of block an entire sub-domain (fr.sitegeek.com) with robots.txt, we like to block one directory (fr.sitegeek.com/blog).
'fr.sitegeek.com/blog' and 'wwww.sitegeek.com/blog' contain the same articles in one language only labels are changed for 'fr' version and we suppose that duplicate content cause problem for SEO. We would like to crawl and index 'www.sitegee.com/blog' articles not 'fr.sitegeek.com/blog'.so, suggest us how to block single sub-domain directory (fr.sitegeek.com/blog) with robot.txt?
This is only for blog directory of 'fr' version even all other directories or pages would be crawled and indexed for 'fr' version.
Thanks,

Hi Rajiv,
If you post the same content on both FR & EN version:
-
if both are written in English (or mainly written in English) - best option would be to have a canonical pointing to the EN version
Example: https://fr.sitegeek.com/category/shared-hosting - most of the content is in English - so in this case I would point a canonical to the EN version -
if the FR version is in French - you can use the HREF lang tag - you can use this tool to generate them, check here for common mistakes and doublecheck the final result here.
Just some remarks:
-
partially translated pages offer little value for users - so it's best to fully translate them or only refer to the EN version
-
I have a strong impression that the EN version was machine translated to the FR version. (ex. French sites never use 'Maison' to link to the Homepage - they use Acceuil). Be aware that Google is perfectly capable to detect auto-translated pages and they consider it to be bad practice (check this video of Matt Cutts - starts at 1:50). So you might want to invest in proper translation or proofreading by a native French speaker.

Thanks Dirk,
we will fix the issue as you suggested.
Could you explain more on duplicate content if we post articles on both 'FR' and 'EN' versions?
Thanks,
Rajiv

Just to add to this, if your subdomain has more than /blog on it, and you only want to block /blog, change Dirk's robots.txt to:
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /blogor to block more than just google:
User-agent:*
Disallow: /blog -
The easiest way would be to put the robots.txt in the root of your subdomain & block access for search engines
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /If you subdomain & the main domain are sharing the same root - this option is not possible. In that case, rather than working with robots.txt I would add a canonical on each page pointing to the main domain, or block all pages in the header (if this is technically possible)
You could also check these similar questions: http://moz.com/community/q/block-an-entire-subdomain-with-robots-txt and http://moz.com/community/q/blocking-subdomain-from-google-crawl-and-index - but the answers given are the same as the options above.
Apart from the technical question, qiven the fact that only the labels are translated, these pages make little sense for human users. It would probably make more sense to link to the normal (English) version of the blog (and put (en Anglais) next to the link.
rgds,
Dirk

Robots.txt and redirected backlinks
Hey there, since a client's global website has a very complex structure which lead to big duplicate content problems, we decided to disallow crawler access and instead allow access to only a few relevant subdirectories. While indexing has improved since this I was wondering if we might have cut off link juice. Since several backlinks point to the disallowed root directory and are from there redirected (301) to the allowed directory I was wondering if this could cause any problems? Example: If there is a backlink pointing to example.com (disallowed in robots.txt) and is redirected from there to example.com/uk/en (allowed in robots.txt). Would this cut off the link juice? Thanks a lot for your thoughts on this. Regards, Jochen

Should I use meta noindex and robots.txt disallow?
Hi, we have an alternate "list view" version of every one of our search results pages The list view has its own URL, indicated by a URL parameter I'm concerned about wasting our crawl budget on all these list view pages, which effectively doubles the amount of pages that need crawling When they were first launched, I had the noindex meta tag be placed on all list view pages, but I'm concerned that they are still being crawled Should I therefore go ahead and also apply a robots.txt disallow on that parameter to ensure that no crawling occurs? Or, will Googlebot/Bingbot also stop crawling that page over time? I assume that noindex still means "crawl"... Thanks 🙂

We are switching our CMS local pages from a subdomain approach to a subfolder approach. What's the best way to handle this? Should we redirect every local subdomain page to its new subfolder page?
We are looking to create a new subfolder approach within our website versus our current subdomain approach. How should we go about handling this politely as to not lose everything we've worked on up to this point using the subdomain approach? Do we need to redirect every subdomain URL to the new subfolder page? Our current local pages subdomain set up: stores.websitename.com How we plan on adding our new local subfolder set-up: websitename.com/stores/state/city/storelocation Any and all help is appreciated.

Meta NoIndex tag and Robots Disallow
Hi all, I hope you can spend some time to answer my first of a few questions 🙂 We are running a Magento site - layered/faceted navigation nightmare has created thousands of duplicate URLS! Anyway, during my process to tackle the issue, I disallowed in Robots.txt anything in the querystring that was not a p (allowed this for pagination). After checking some pages in Google, I did a site:www.mydomain.com/specificpage.html and a few duplicates came up along with the original with

"There is no information about this page because it is blocked by robots.txt" So I had added in Meta Noindex, follow on all these duplicates also but I guess it wasnt being read because of Robots.txt. So coming to my question. Did robots.txt block access to these pages? If so, were these already in the index and after disallowing it with robots, Googlebot could not read Meta No index? Does Meta Noindex Follow on pages actually help Googlebot decide to remove these pages from index? I thought Robots would stop and prevent indexation? But I've read this:
"Noindex is a funny thing, it actually doesn’t mean “You can’t index this”, it means “You can’t show this in search results”. Robots.txt disallow means “You can’t index this” but it doesn’t mean “You can’t show it in the search results”. I'm a bit confused about how to use these in both preventing duplicate content in the first place and then helping to address dupe content once it's already in the index. Thanks! B0 -
What are the best way to get a new subdomain ranked properly
Our main site (blog with 700 high quality articles) ranks pretty well and we recently launced a rapidly growing forum (55.000 posts in the first 11 weeks) on a subdomain. What would be a good strategy for ranking the forum quickly

Old pages still crawled by SE returning 404s. Better to put 301 or block with robots.txt ?
Hello guys, A client of ours has thousand of pages returning 404 visibile on googl webmaster tools. These are all old pages which don't exist anymore but Google keeps on detecting them. These pages belong to sections of the site which don't exist anymore. They are not linked externally and didn't provide much value even when they existed What do u suggest us to do: (a) do nothing (b) redirect all these URL/folders to the homepage through a 301 (c) block these pages through the robots.txt. Are we inappropriately using part of the crawling budget set by Search Engines by not doing anything ? thx

Create a new XML Sitemap for a blog subdomain?
What would be the best way to go about this? A site just put a blog on http://blog.domain.com/ Should there be a separate XML Sitemap for that particular subdomain or should the original XML Sitemap for the main domain be sufficient? Looking forward to your responses. Thanks
