Switching Hosting & SEO
-
Hello friends,
We are facing the prospect of switching to a new hosting account or company. We are currently using a third-party reseller account but are outgrowing that account. We are considering VPS and dedicated servers. However, this will mean updates for IPs and nameservers.
Does anyone have experience with SEO consequences of making switch?
Best practices? Tips? Obstacles?
Any and all comments/advice welcome.
We're trying to balance the potential SEO ramifications of making the switch with the consequences of reduced site speed.

About 4 years ago we moved our hosting. As described in earlier posts, everything was replicated onto our new server beforehand, until all that remained was to switch the nameservers.
This was done, and there was no interruption or impact on our rankings. Everything was fine, and there really was no need to panic.
I guess the rule is, make sure the groundwork is done thoroughly and properly and then switch... you shouldn't have a problem.
Regards,
Chris

I concur with Ryan's assessment - I've switched to and from VPS setups; there are no SEO repercussions. Ryan's advice to prepare everything ahead of time... and then change the address on the nameservers, should have everything propagating over (it varies from site to site) within 6 to 72 hours.

Thanks Ryan, greatly appreciated. That seems to confirm what I've been reading too.

Have the new server prepped (your site uploaded, db's ready) before you switch the nameservers and there should be repercussions at all AFAIK. As the namerservers get updated around the world they simply point to your new server that is already there ready to go. The improved site speed will be a big win.

I've never moved a large site, but our little pest control site didn't have any negative effects when we moved it. Same thing, we needed a little more growth flexibility. I think the search engines understand that sites need to move or add IPs.

Re: Auto Detection of Currency based on IP & Google SEO
Greetings to the fellow Moz community members! On an e-commerce site, I am using a script to change the default currency of storefront based on IP detection ( GBP for UK visitors, CAD for Canadian visitors and so on). My question is : can this create any problems at all in Google Crawling or Indexing? Will google be able to understand the setup? I don't think this should trigger the "cloaking" or presenting different content to search engines vs users, but just want to double check from the collective wisdom here. Thanks for reading, and wish you a good day ahead. Warm Regards Amit

Because Google used that to find out which country your target audience was. But is this still important and have it an influence today regarding to SEO? Hope there is someone who can help 🙂

Does Quantcast interfered with SEO?
Quantcast (http://www.quantcast.com/), a stats program was removed from my clients website because the former SEO consultant said it interefered with his SEO efforts, claiming the google bots weren't reading it right. I have never heard of that before and my client now wants Quantcast back on their website. Has anyone heard of this problem with Quantcast?
