Why doesn't Google seem to care about referral spam?
-
In researching the issue of referral spam, there is no shortage if info, both on MOZ and beyond. But, neither the Google Analytics Blog or Help Forums seem to mention the issue at all. I'd think it is something that they would want to get rid of, yet it seems like they don't even acknowledge that it exists.
Anyone have insights into this? Am I missing something, or is Google strangely silent on an issue that is becoming more and more annoying for anyone trying to use GA data?
-
I am just guessing, but here is my guess. I think that this actually took Google by surprise. I bet they didn't even consider it when they made GA. So I can see them trying to rush out a system where a property ID has to be on a site that it is registered to or something of that nature. But I bet them not mentioning it is not them dismissing it, it is more of them mentioning the issue when they have a fix for it. That seems to be their typical fashion.

I have to agree with you Ira, these referral spams keep on throwing my GA and MOZ data off and really frustrating, and so far no real solution. I saw a few website recommending to block the websites in .htaccess or filtering the data in GA. Needless to say, none of the options are really good since there are hundreds of different spam domains. I was also really surprised that Google hasn't really taken any actions against this problem, probably motivating furthermore these spam "attacks".
I'm interested if these spam attacks affect the rankings since most of them have 95-100% bounce of rate, so google might think that your website doesn't have the best quality...

I'm also perplexed. You'd think they'd eliminate some of the more well-known culprits.
They do offer the "referral exclusion" tool, which I'm sure you're aware of. If not, it's in Analytics under the Tracking Info menu.

Google Tag Manager for cross-domain tracking
Anybody experience with setting up Google Tag Manager to contain the Analytics script including cross domain tracking? We have a marketingwebsite .com / .com.br and an application running in a subdomain, but have always had some difficulties in getting the cross domain tracking working. Would be great to be able to exchange some experience with fellow Mozzers.

Google Analytics Content Experiments - Experiment Conversions and Goal Figures Don't Match
Hi, I set up a new content experiment 6 days ago, the experiment says there have been 2 conversions but the goal associated with it says 5. The experiment is set to target 100% of traffic, distributed evenly among the variations, the goal is a destination URL goal. I've doubled checked the goal set up and everything seems fine. How can the content experiment report a different figure to the goal associated with it? Has anyone else noticed the same problem? Is this a bug? Is there a workaround available? Or is there a setting I need to be aware of when creating content experiments to prevent this from happening? I need to know I can trust the results the content experiments provide.

Regular Expressions in Google Analytics
Hi All I've been struggling to create a regular expression for a Google Analytics goal step that would match the following: ^/specifictextstring/anytextstring/anytextstring/

^/specifictextstring/anytextstring/ However I don't want it to match any URLs that end with: /anytextstring**_**phonecall or /phonecall, for example: /specifictextstring/anytextstring/anytextstring/anytextstring**phonecall
/specifictextstring/anytextstring/anytextstring**phonecall
/specifictextstring/anytextstring/anytextstring/phonecall
/specifictextstring/anytextstring/phonecall Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for all contributions.0 -

Google Analytics - Not provided info
Morning all, i am using Google analytics for some time now, One of the issues that i don't have a clear answer for is, when i am looking at Traffic Source --> overview In the Keyword column, that is a line (not provided) What we think here is that we cant see the keywords if someone arrived to our website but was logged-in to Google account Is this correct? is there a way to find the keywords behind this (not provided)? - i have many visits for this line (17.3% of all visits) and i don't know which keywords people used. Thank you SeoWise

I have data missing in Google and don't know who to turn to for help
Hi everyone, I know this isn't the 'Google help forum' but I'm stuck and I hope someone here might be able to point me in the right direction. For a period last month - Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th November Google Analytics reports our site as having 0 visits. In addition we have two days which were strangely low - Weds 21st 105 visits, Weds 28th Nov 78 visits. We normally get between 1000 and 1200 visits on a weekday from a global audience (I know that was the Thanksgiving weekend, but the US accounts for ~10% of total traffic). Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do? The "report a bug" board on the Google help forum has a few entries like this, people with 0 visits shouting "help!" into the void with no response. Ideas?

Does Google Analytics parse visits from search apps?
Does anyone know if Google Analytics reports visits to your website differently from individual search apps like Google and Bing? Or do they just treat them the same as any other keyword visit from Google or Bing search engine? I suppose the end result is probably the same as in the Google app you're using Google so it would just be a different access point versus a new tool. I'm just curious if there is a way to see how many Mobile visits are coming from the apps vs the browser. For me personally I have the Google and Bing iOS apps installed but rarely use them, opting for the Safari search bar 99% of the time.
