Contact Page
-
I'm currently designing a new website for my wife, who just started her own wedding/engagement photography business. I'm trying to build it as SEO friendly as possible, but she brought up an idea that she likes that I've never tried before. Typically on all the websites I've ever built, I've had a dedicated contact page that has the typical contact form. Because that contact form on a wedding photographers website is almost as important as selling a product on an e-commerce site, she brought up the possibility of putting the contact form in the footer site-wide (minus maybe the homepage) rather than having a dedicated contact page. And in the navigation, where you have links such as "Home", "Portfolio", "About", "Prices", "Contact", etc. the "Contact" navigation item would transfer the user to the bottom of the page they are on rather than a new page.
Any thoughts on which way would be better for a case like this, and any positives/negatives for doing it each way? One thought I had is that if it's in the footer rather than it's own page, it would lose it's search-ability as it's technically duplicate content on each page. But then again, that's what a footer is.
Thanks,
Mickey

These are suggestions only because everyone has a different style of doing business. These suggestions are aggressive.
If you want the client to call you on the phone, the phone number is your "call to action". So, place it on the website where EVERYONE will see it.
The header of the site in bold font with "Call us" or "Free consultation" or whatever language you think will elicit calls. Don't underestimate the power of those two or three words that accompany the phone number. Your goal is to have the client call YOU and call you NOW. Communicate that you are available and willing to talk. You like to talk photography and weddings, etc.
Display your phone number in many locations. Place it in equally bold font in your footer because some people look down there for contact information.
Include the phone number in bold font in article text where you describe your service. Include it at the bottom of every article that is written for the benefit of the client. Precede it with welcoming words. Write lots of these articles because people who contemplate important decisions often devour every scrap of information that you reveal about yourself.
Place the phone number it in the captions of your photos because anyone who reads the captions has an interest that has been triggered.
Some people procrastinate making phone calls. Speak to them if you want to be their photographer.
In a crowded industry like photography some people don't want to call every service provider. Instead they are browsing to find just two or three to call. Speak to them if you want to be their photographer.
There will be people who want to email. Talk to other photographers and see if their clients call or email. You can include a "contact us" in your persistent navigation. When people click to that page they will see your phone number, your email address, your studio address. You can include a form if you want. These forms don't work on many websites so people don't trust them as having delivered the mail. I don't trust them and just grab the email address from the code and compose a message in my email client instead of typing a big message in a tiny little window that often has length limits that are unannounced.

How about doing it the same way online help/chat boxes come up.
So in the bottom right hand corner it opens up after say x page views or x seconds. Says "catchy message" just pop a few details in here and I will be right back with you.
This kind of interaction and prompt is very effective.
If they choose not to respond, then they can minimize it and are now aware of where and how easy it is to contact you.

Wordpress Page vs. Posts
My campaigns are telling me I have some duplicate content. I know the reason but not sure how to correct it. Example site here: Bikers Blog is a "static page" referencing each actual "blog post" I write. This site is somewhat orphaned and about to be reconstituted. I have a number of other sites with a similar problem. I'm not sure how to structure the "page" so it only shows a summary of the blog post on the page not the whole post. Permalinks is set as "/%postname%/" I've posted on Wordpress.org with no answer. Since this is an SEO issue I thought maybe someone with WP experience could chime in. Thanks, Don

Product Pages Outranking Category Pages
Hi, We are noticing an issue where some product pages are outranking our relevant category pages for certain keywords. For a made up example, a "heavy duty widgets" product page might rank for the keyword phrase Heavy Duty Widgets, instead of our Heavy Duty Widgets category page appearing in the SERPs. We've noticed this happening primarily in cases where the name of the product page contains an at least partial match for the desired keyword phrase we want the category page to rank for. However, we've also found isolated cases where the specified keyword points to a completely irrelevent pages instead of the relevant category page. Has anyone encountered a similar issue before, or have any ideas as to what may cause this to happen? Let me know if more clarification of the question is needed. Thanks!

What is the best way to find missing alt tags on my site (site wide - not page by page)?
I am looking to find all the missing alt tags on my site at once. I have a FF extension that use to do it page by page, but my site is huge and that will take forever. Thanks!!

Translating Page Titles & Page Descriptions
I am working on a site that will be published in the original English, with localized versions in French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. All the versions will use the English information architecture. As part of the process, we will be translating the page the titles and page descriptions. Translation quality will be outstanding. The client is a translation company. Each version will get at least four pairs of eyes including expert translators, editors, QA experts and proofreaders. My question is what special SEO instructions should be issued to translators re: the page titles and page descriptions. (We have to presume the translators know nothing about SEO.) I was thinking of: stick to the character counts for titles and descriptions make sure the title and description work together avoid over repetition of keywords page titles (over-optimization peril) think of the descriptions as marketing copy try to repeat some title phrases in the description (to get the bolding and promote click though) That's the micro stuff. The macro stuff: We haven't done extensive keyword research for the other languages. Most of the clients are in the US. The other language versions are more a demo of translation ability than looking for clients elsewhere. Are we missing something big here?

Odd Ranking Page - Contact Us
Hi Everyone, So I have a client and when they are logged in the "Contact Us" page ranks as the number 1 page. She sends me screenshots when she is looked in through the corporate Google account, in a panic because of this...I am guessing she is frequently visiting the contact us page while logged in, which is why this is happening but I can't think of any other reason. From a ranking factors perspective there aren't any reasons for this. There are barely any links pointing to this page. I just don't know what to tell her. I can't duplicate it.

http://www.sandersonweatherall.co.uk/office-to-let-leeds/ 1st Question Ive checked robots txt file no problems, i'm in the midst of updating the xml sitemap (it had the old one in place). It only has one link from this page http://www.sandersonweatherall.co.uk/Site-Map/ So is the reason oits not being indexed just a simple case of lack if SEO juice from inbound links so the remedy lies in routing more inbound links to the offending page? 2nd question Is the quickest way to diagnose if a web address is not being indexed to cut and paste the url in the Google search box and if it doesnt return the page theres a problem? Thanks in advance, David0 -
Does this page crawl well?
I just put up a page that uses an image map to illustrate a national currency note. http://www.antiquebanknotes.com/NationalCurrency/National-Bank-Note-Information.aspx My goal with this page is get results for National Bank Note. But I know image maps are wierd creatures and not good for linking. My question is, will Google index my tooltips and find this page useful and therefore worthy? I think the content is useful for my users but I just don't know if the implementation will work well. This screen will eventually have 5 or 6 notes on it and I don't want to do it the concensus is negative... Thanks for any advice.
