Is this type of activity normal?
-
One of our pages has been significantly changing positions over the past few weeks. I know that some daily fluctuation is normal, but this seems a bit extreme. Any insight as to why this might be happening?
-
It's always a tricky one when changes have been made and reverted Joel. There is an element of waiting for things to settle down again, while a part of you wants to carry on and make more improvements - but this can work against you.
It 'looks' like Google is trying to figure out where you should be, but I don't think it is anything more sinister than that. It's certainly not a penalty at work as they give you a hit and rarely see movement like this.
I would monitor the stats for another couple of weeks and then see where you stand. If it levels out, you at least know where you need to be heading and what changes to make next.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the reply. It's good to know it's not uncommon, and it is an internal page. I haven't tried any other tracking apps, but I might have to give that a shot to see if it reports the same findings.
As far as ongoing work, we did make a few changes to the page in late April/early May. We modified a few on-page ranking factors to boost our Moz page grade for that query, but that's unfortunately when the initial drop happened from #8 to out of the top 50. We've since reverted a few of these changes and haven't touched it for about a month.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily normal, but it certainly isn't uncommon. I do see this sort of thing quite a lot, and oddly enough, I see it most on internal pages.
Is there on-going work happening on the site? Are changes being made frequently? Have you also tried other tracking apps, as I do know that some are not quite as accurate as others and report differently.

Another company is coming up in search results when I type in my phone number
If I search for my client's phone number on Google, without gaps, ie 02036315541, another company comes up at the top of the list. This company has a similar name to ours, but it is in a different town and it does different things. My company name is Energy Contract Renewals https://www.energycontractrenewals.co.uk/ and their company is https://energyrenewals.co.uk. As far as I can see, the other company does not mention our phone number anywhere on their site or on their GMB page so I don't know why they are coming up. We do not come up at all for this search. However, if I put our phone number in like this: 020 3631 5541, our company does come up and the other company does not. Anyone know how I can correct this or if it is even possible to do something about it?

How to activate Page Fetching and Rendering
We have a coupons and deal website. Coupons are added and removed from the website on a daily basis. But crawler isn't crawling it that often. Lately we started fetching and rendering the page, but that is a time taking task as we have more than 500 stores with coupons. So, I was looking for some API or some method using which the crawler would crawl the website as defined. Suppose "x" store page should be crawled every alternate day as we daily update the coupons there, whereas "y" store coupons are update fortnightly so , they can be crawled weekly. Can somebody suggest me something..

404 Error from site - is this normal?
I have been trying to clean up any 404 errors. We keep getting the following: URL /include/vdimgck.php referring domain http://www.856d.c@m/plus/feedback.php rendered domain unclickable by adding the "@" since I do not know if it is safe. I just turned off the trackbacks and pings in the blog since I saw it was producing duplicate content and from what I read it is not worth keeping those with Wordpress. is vdimgck.php anything some here instantly recognizes ? It tops all our 404 errors, seems like a lot of requests. Thanks!

What should I do about links coming in that are from link farm type sites?
I just noticed two back links to a couple of sites around pharmaceuticals/attorneys. The one link is to a chinese site with url: http://e.lifestyle.com.cn/fashionweekly/nzj/353093_2.shtml, and the other is to a site called Adroo: http://adroo.com/us/?view=list&list_id=104154&lang=en. Both appear to be some type of link farm sites, one has come in as a nofollow (surprise, you can buy "ads" on their site, both have decent DA. There is no reason for them to link to theses sites, should I find a way to stop the link? Also, on one of the sites we had a dmoz link and it is not showing in OSE? Link is still open in dmoz though. Thanks for any input.

Subdomain to Subcategory migration for an active news website blog
A very active news website has a very active blog as a sub-domain. For all good SEO reasons, they want to transfer the blog from a subdomain to a subcategory. Now, the issue is this blog is very active, updated daily and lots of people comment on it. So how should the website go about making this change while causing minimal seo loss and ensuring that the commenting process remains active and on going. A detailed answer would be much appreciated! Thanks! I cam accross this blog post that guides on how to change a subcategory to a subdomain: http://devilsworkshop.org/moving-a-wordpress-blog-from-a-subdirectory-to-subdomain-preserving-permalinks/. Any words on this would also be appreciated!
