Somebody took an article from my site and posted it on there own site but gave it credit back to my site is this duplicate content?
-
Hey guys,
This question may sound a bit drunk, but someone copied our article and re-posted it on their site the exact article, however the article was credited to our site and the original author of the article had approved the other site could do this. We created the article first though, Will this still be regarded as duplicate content?
The owner of the other site has told us it wasn't because they credited it.
Any advice would be awesome
Thanks

Thanks Richard, I had an email just now from the site owner saying they have created a rel canonical and credited our site!

Hi EGOL
Thanks for your great advice. I just received an email from the other site saying they have created a canonical to the site credited our site! Thanks for clearing everything up for me!

If you have an article on your site and that article is then published verbatim on another site or multiple sites, then there is a good chance that one of the following will happen.
** If one of the other sites is stronger than your site, the stronger site has a good chance of outranking you in the Google search results. It does not matter if you published first, the other site, if stronger, still has a good chance of outranking you. Googlers will tell you "we are usually good at recognizing the original source of the content". I will be generous and say that they are wildly overestimating their abilities.
** If your article is published on lots of other sites - even weak sites - it is possible that your site will be filtered from the search results. You can see what sites are being filtered by going to the last page of the search results for a querry. There, if any pages are being filtered you will see
"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 100 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."If your site is the strongest for that query then, if you are lucky, the other sites will simply rank below you for the same query.
It is best not to share your content. If you want to share it and have a really good chance of it being credited to you, then the site publishing it should add an rel=canonical to the page like this...
That will credit the article to your site and instruct google that this page should not appear in the search results.

Hi Edward,
Duplicate content is generally only harmful when it's on your own site. I say generally because you wouldn't want to post the exact same or poorly spun article on multiple websites to get links coming in but that's not what's happening here.
I have duplicated entire sites onto new domains and changed only the suburb keyword. I just did an entire swap and replace of one location keyword and the new duplicated site ranked beautifully. It's not a tough niche of course, but in duplicate content on different domains isn't a problem.
In your case I wouldn't worry about it too much at all, as it won't hurt your rankings. If you want to get rid of it though, just sign up for a free DMCA account and they'll get it taken down for you, assuming you own that content or originally paid for it to be created.

Site Footer Links Used for Keyword Spam
I was on the phone with a proposed web relaunch firm for one of my clients listening to them talk about their deep SEO knowledge. I cannot believe that this wouldn’t be considered black-hat or at least very Spammy in which case a client could be in trouble. On this vendor’s site I notice that they stack the footer site map with about 50 links that are basically keywords they are trying to rank for. But here’s the kicker shown by way of example from one of the themes in the footer: 9 footer links:

The canonical for each page links back to itself. I simply can’t believe Google doesn’t consider this Spammy. Interested in your view.

WP Datar site shady linking to my site
Hello, I have done some research on this but cannot find a solid answer to my question. After recently reviewing my "not found" errors in webmaster tools, I see that a site called "WP Datar" has linked to a number of our pages that actually do not exist. I am wondering first, if this will harm our site, and second, what is the best way to get those links from their site taken down? I tried emailing, but of course, the email address listed on the site did not work. 🙂 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Content optimized for old keywords and G Updates
Hi, We've got some old content, about 50 pages worth in an Ecommerce site, that is optimized for keywords that aren't the subject of the page - these keywords occur about 8 times (2 keywords per page) in the old content. We are going through these 50 pages and changing the title, H1, and meta description tag to match the exact subject of the page - so that we will increase in rankings again - the updates have been lowering our rankings. Do we need to completely rewrite the content for these 50 pages, or can we just sprinkle it with any needed additions of the one keyword that is the subject of the page? The reason I'm asking is that our rankings keep dropping and these 50 pages seem to be part of the problem. We're in the process of updating these 50 pages Thanks.

Identifying why my site has a penalty
Hi, My site has been hit with a google penalty of some sort, but it doesn't coincide with a penguin or panda update. I have attached a graph of my visits that demonstrates this. I have been working on my SEO since the latter part of last year and have been seeing good results, then all of a sudden my search referrals dropped by 70%. Can anyone advise on what it could be? Thanks! Will XBvZq2e

I have a list of websites that are not spam.. there are ok sites... just that I need to work on the conent again as the sites content might not be useful for users at 100%. There are not bad sites with spammy content... just that I want to rewrite some of the content to really make great websites... the goal would be to have great content to get natual links and a great user experience.. I have 40 sites... all travel sites related to different destinations around the world. I also have other sites that I haven't worked on for some time.. here are some sites: www.simplyparis.org

www.simplymadrid.org
www.simplyrome.org etc... Again there are not spam sites but not as useful as they coul become... I want to work on few sites only to see how it goes.... will this penalise my sites that I am working on if I have other sites with average content or not as good ? I want to make great content good for link bait 🙂0 -
Finding out why Bing gave page-level penalty?
In the last couple of weeks Bing has gradually removed 5 webpages of my website from their SERP's. The URL's are totally gone. They all had top 5 rankings and just got removed out of nothing. Have can I investigate what went wrong with these pages? Are here perhaps experts who are willing to investigate this for a fee? How can I restore a page-level penalty? I have no messages in my Bing Webmastertools account.
