How do you know if SEO factors are holding you back in rankings?
-
Hi there!
I have been working on improving a site for almost a year now, and though we have made great strides in ranking for many relevant keywords our site is hovering at the bottom of page 2 and fluctuates from position 14 to 18 for almost a year. I am pretty prompt at addressing HTML improvements suggestions in WMT, but don't know where I should focus my limited time to get the most results. Competing websites have more backlinks than we do, but content is very thin and I don't think they update or add new content every week like we do. Please help! Am I missing something obvious?? Thanks in advance

It depends on how you work and your relationship with the client. I guess the first step is identifying issues and then finding the right person to fix.
If you look around you'll find plenty of (free) plugins that can help you if the platform is Wordpress.
That list is not complete just some main points that usually do some good, and it is in no particular order.
This is a must - https://moz.com/blog/technical-site-audit-for-2015

It sounds like your site is ranking as it is. The first principle is always do no harm. If you clearly identify a spam link - then disavow. But you are through the big updates and it sounds like the links have an organic origin - so not high from the information on the priority list.
Obtaining backlinks - require some strategic considerations. I will suggest a few easy options. Check out your link profile and see what links you can change from nofollow to follow. Might be just a phone call or two. But most importantly i would have a staff meeting - pay for the pizza... then explain backlinks to all the staff & make the staff part of the solution as well. Demand the boss get some editorial on the business and a backlink!
You cannot do everything - share the load.
Michael has identified page speed. That is correct - a big one, aim for under 2 seconds.
Hope that assists.

Thanks Michael,
Looks like I have a lot of work to do...
I know our page speed is better that the site in number 1 position, should I move on to the next steps in order that you've listed? Sort of an aside, would you normally take care of all these things yourself or do you work with the developer? I sort of fell into my position and am responsible for Adwords, Content, Copywriting, and everything in between, I didn't build the site (wordpress) and am not comfortable with modifying CSS files needed to speed up page etc. Thank you.

I have some opportunities on the backburner but agree I need to set out a clear strategy/plan and work towards goals on a regular basis. Currently WMT shows 137 RD but most of those are picked up from the old domain which has been 301'd. Moz shows 8 RD and Majestic shows 16. I'm always on the fence about using the disavow file as I'm not sure if the 301'd links carry the same weight (most of them are not very good). I've heard that jumping the gun on the disavow can sometimes do more harm than good. Should I just move on and work on getting better quality links or start disavowing first. We do rank well for our most specific relevant search term but I'm trying for the highest traffic/competition keyword for a year now with only an increase of 5 positions.

Secondary to John's response I would be meticulous in squeezing the very best in:
- all aspects of page speed
- ensuring only the URLs you want are indexed (no tags, query strings etc)
- no redirect chains
- reduce/remove 404s
- reduce/remove 301s
- sitemap is accurate and weighted correctly
- check the cached URLs (text only) are showing the text and not swamped by other stuff on the page.
There is other stuff but these sometimes throw open other issues to look at.

Without checking your site quality relevant backlinks sound like the main concern. Do you have a backlink strategy in place? It does take time...

What to do with PDFs that rank well?
Looking at some reports, I found that a client's site has PDFs that are ranking well for niche terms and getting some traffic. What can I do to get more out of them from a marketing standpoint? The obvious issue is that a PDF doesn't have the interactivity of a site visit, where we have analytics and CTAs. Someone has to follow a link back from the PDF to the site for us to even register a visit, let alone try to get their email or have them otherwise convert. My first guess is to make landing page summaries of the PDF content that link to the PDF, and canonical the PDF to the respective landing page. Has anyone tried this, or done something else that they would recommend again in this situation?

More content, more backlinks, more appealing design, better SEO than competitor but ranking worse. Why?
Me and my team are working hard to put a good SEO strategy in place and good, useful content for our visitors. We're online for a little more than a year and we got some success but nothing compared to the majority of our competitors. The only thing we noticed so far is that our strongest competitors all seem to have a website based on WordPress... well is it possible to rank better than a site based on WP if we optimize everything well? One of our competitor is a very simple, thin affiliate website based on WP and is called www.comparatif-meilleur.fr ... their content is limited but they do better than us in term of ranking organically... On our side (www.lecomparateur.net) we have backlinks from Wikipedia, Dmoz and a couple of other very good sites, plus a better content, better design and better overall optimization. There must be something we do bad, but we can't find it. Please help 😞 P.S. We update our site quite often too

Hypothetical SEO Question
I am running a website for a law firm. It has been running for many, many years and has plenty of backlinks and authority. I then create a standalone website for a specific type of case that the law firm is handling. On that website, I have a page that copies some of the attorney bio text from the main website. How much of a negative impact will this standalone website have on the main website as far as duplicate content issues are concerned? Please explain your answer in detail. Thank you in advance.

How to be a good SEO optimizer while competing with a good ranked Bad SEO optimizer?
My keywords are very competitive. My on page optimization report gives A grade for all the keywords I want to target to my Root domain. But my root domain does not show up on search engines for those same keywords. So thanks to SEOmoz i have managed to understand the place I lack is good link building. My competitors have done lot of link building through spamming, commenting on blogs, directories etc. Now according to good seo, this is not right. What do i do? I get digging more in it, i realized that i am getting traffic mostly for less globally searched keywords. But my competitors get high traffic from well searched keywords. How do i cope with such competition? Thanks

Well Ranked National Site - Need Local Rankings
We are a virtual company doing business in 30 states nationwide. All our business is done via the phone, fax, email and express mail. Back in 2008 I optimized our small 8 page website for our key terms and was able to rank the site #1 nationally for our main keywords. (I did a 6 month consulting gig for the company). The site remained #1 in Google until last year when some serious competitors entered the space and knocked us down to the middle of page one. Then with the Panda update #1 & #2 we have seen our traffic drop 50% mostly due to not receiving the City + Keywords rankings any more. I have now been hired full time to bring us back but my question is this Do I need to build out city specific pages on the existing website? Do I need to buy keyword specific domains and create microsites? Do a combination of both? I would love to do both but I have to prioritize my efforts. Any thoughts would be great.
