How is a Bounce defined for mobile devices?

Hi,
does anyone know or have a link for me, where I can find, what or how a Bounce is defined for mobile devices?
If you are on safari mobile and click on the homebutton, is that a bounce?
If you are surfing and you get a message alert on the top and you change application, is that a bounce?Any ideas are much appreciated.

"Bounce rate," as calculated by Google Analytics, is the percentage of people who come to your site and then don't continue to another page or do anything that triggers an Event. For example, if someone lands on a blog post, reads it, loves it, then moves on to Candy Crush Saga without actually interacting with your site, that's a bounce. If someone lands on your blog post, hates it and immediately hits the "back" button, that's a bounce. If someone lands on your blog post and watches a video, but you don't have Event tracking set up for that, that's a bounce.
So, if you're trying to make sense of your web analytics-provided "bounce rate," keep that in mind. Some people like to set up events which will fire every 15 seconds or so that people have the page up on their screens, but that can bloat your analytics data. It depends on how important bounce rate is to you. I personally like setting up Events that fire as you scroll down the page, because I think that's a better indication of engagement.
If you're asking because you're concerned that a high mobile bounce rate is going to affect your mobile rankings versus desktop, you're going to need to dig deeper. Google doesn't look at bounce rate as an analytics platform would count it, Google pays attention to how quickly people return to their search results after visiting your site, and what they do after that. Bounce rate isn't a great indication of what Google's looking for. Start tracking engagement with Events based on how far people get on the page to get a better idea of what Google is seeing.

Can I just add that Google have confirmed that they don't use bounce rate when figuring your search positions, so as long as you are just looking at this from a usability study, then that is great. I just didn't want you worrying this might impact results.
Will clicking the home button on an iPhone / iPad be classed as a bounce? I highly doubt it.

I'm asking because my BR for mobile is currently quite high (we have a mobile site version). The thing with closing a site on mobile is quite different to desktop as I think. Not everyone knows, how to properly close an app (e.x safari on iphone) for example. Really closing it, means double clicking on homebutton and shutting down the app.
If I think about my own behaviour, I never close a window on my mobile device (or very rarely). So if changing the app or clicking on the homebutton is a bounce, that bounce rate is not just affected by a site but more by the usage behaviour of a mobile device.
What do you think?

I agree with Andy here, just wanted to add that generally the bounce rate on mobile is bit high.
when people are on mobile, they are usually in hurry as they are in hurry and looking for the relevant information asap. If I'm searching something on desktop, I'll take the time to go through whole website. But if I'm in my Accord and looking for the nearest cafe, I just want the information immediately. I'm not going to spend my time to look around a site if a site does not tell me immediately, I am gonna close it right away.

As far as I understand, a bounce is the same as a bounce on a desktop. If you go back using the browser button, this would be a bounce. If you hit the home button, I suspect that this would be as well - but it all depends on how this is reported back. I can't see how changing apps might be considered amongst this though.

Increase in Direct Traffic plus Bounce Rate rise for all traffic sources
Hello, I work for an agency and we have seen a big rise in bounce rate for 4 of our clients which happened on the exact same day. This rise on bounce rate is across all traffic sources. We are also seeing a big increase in direct traffic, starting on the same day. Is it possible for bot traffic to affect the bounce rate of all other traffic sources? We have ruled out double reporting in GA but can explain how the bounce rate has increased for all traffic sources. How is this linked to the rise in direct traffic (in some cases as high as 500%)? Why did all our Image Packs - featured SERP - disappeared on Mobile in July?
We saw our keywords ranking for Image Packs consistently on both desktop and mobile. Then July came and our image packs for mobile completely went away. We still have them for desktop, and we are still seeing the other Featured SERPs (ex. featured snippets) on mobile, but nothing for Image Packs. Has anyone else seen this happen? Any ideas why or how to change it so we can rank again?

In Google Analytic Experiment I want to Judge Performance of Page Along with Pageviews, Bounces, Transaction etc
Hi All, For my ecommerce site for mobile site category page I have redesign the page in 2 different ways so one original page and 2 new designs. Now I want to do A/B testing with google experiment. I want to measure performance of page via pageviews, bounce rate, exit rate, conversion rate, add to basket etc. Now in objective for this experiment I can select anyone thing either Pageviews, or bounces or transaction or goal. So my query is 1) I cannot select all objective together? 2) or for same page I have to create too many experiments by selecting each objective? 3) exit rate or add to basket objective is not in experiment list so? Bounce Rate Reduce day by day? how?
Hi, I have implemented enhance ecommerce with tag manager after that all working fine but bounce rate suddenly started reducing. Then again i implemented ehance ecommerce then mobile bounce rate also started reducing. As per me tag assistant showing okay. Can you please check my attached site and let me know the issue? Thanks! Irrelevant page with high bounce rate
I have a page on my site, www.waikoloavacationrentals.com/kolea-rentals/floor-plans, that gets me roughly 17% of my traffic. That being said it is not really relevant traffic because it comes from the search term "floor plans", which really has nothing to do with Hawaii vacation rentals, which is what I do. My question is does Google know how to figure that out when they are looking at my stats or is there a way to let google know that that page probably should not show up for that search phrase? On the positive, they are nice floor plans and if someone is searching for ideas for floor plans and see one of them in google images then it probably could help them, but it really is not relevant to my business. It has a 80% bounce rate, but does have an average time on page of 1.5 minutes, which is a fair amount for what is there.

Bounce rates plummeted
In Google Analytics, my average bounce rates plummeted basically overnight. I went from a consistent average daily bounce rate of about 65% to an average daily bounce rate near 5%. My average number of visitors has stayed the same. I don't think there is any significant change I made to my site that may have caused this. Has anyone else had the same problem and know why it happened and how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Bounce Rates - How would you deal with this scenario?
Greetings! I actually don't have a definitive answer to this so wish to throw it out to the community for thoughts and feedback. I have a client who we shall call "Site 1", but they also have a job board, we shall call "Site 2". A product of their own success, they have a high bounce rate with visitors landing on Site 1, seeing a job they want to apply for and bouncing straight off to Site 2. The problem is that this is resulting in Google seeing some of these pages as having bounce rates of 80% to 100%, based on this formula: Bounce rate = total number of visits viewing only one page / total number of visits Now, I hate anything black hat or grey hat so wish to know how you would deal with this... If the results from Site 2 were displayed in a new framed page on Site 1, would this still be classed as a bounce? If when they click on a job on Site 1, they were taken to an intermediate page on Site 1 saying "Thank you, you are being redirected to your chosen job" for 5 seconds before being taken to Site 2, would this be classed as a bounce? Perhaps the job they wish to apply for 'pulled' from Site 2 and actually displayed in a new page on Site 1 would be a better way to go? I think that option 1 might work, sure that number 3 would but not so sure about number 2, but look forward to your comments and thoughts. Regards, Andy
