This redirect has me racking my brain
-
I cannot tell if something is wrong with my domain redirect or if it is some default behavior by Chrome. I made a short video, I used Moz first since they are using an SSL certificate too. But the gist is immediately when I type in the address it flashes www, then redirects to the non www. domain. Because of how its happening so quick I cannot tell if this is just default Chrome behavior or if I have the DNS set up incorrectly. Here is the video. http://screencast.com/t/UDHmdTCbQv

This looks like it could be a non issue, it doesn't do it in any other browsers and does not do it on other computers, which I think is strange.
On another note I wanted to email you and ask you about something totally unrelated, is there a good email address for you? The only one I have is the support one. Or you can email me at lesley@dh42.com

This is baffling me. This is what I have in my htaccess http://screencast.com/t/zB6UME7aCT This is my httpd.conf for port:80 http://screencast.com/t/DXoDU5Fnt and for port 443 http://screencast.com/t/KtB5NKvkYP Also this is what I have in my dns file in CPanel, http://screencast.com/t/8atFbpKdM The CNAME is still there, because when it is removed since it redirects to www first, the site breaks.

Howdy Lesley!
It looks like the www is 301 redirecting correctly to non-www, but that is happened in Apache, looks good. The DNS record looks to be setup as a CNAME currently, I might suggest changing that to an A record (so 'www.dh42.com' point to 67.225.148.201 as well). The 301 redirect from non SSL to SSL looks good too!
Remove that CNAME record to reduce a roundtrips. Also in Apache, make sure someone visiting 'www.dh42.com' gets redirected to the non-www and SSL version of the site ('https://dh42.com'). In the current setup, there is an extra 301 redirection that you can remove.
Your Apache config might looks like this to achieve that:
skip a redirection and directly go from http://www to https://(non-www)
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} www.(.*.)?dh42.com
RewriteRule (.*) https://%1dh42.com$1 [R=301,L]

Domain Level Redirects - HTTP and HTTPS
About 2 years ago (well before I started with the company), we did an http=>https migration. It was not done correctly. The http=>https redirect was never inserted into the .htaccess file. In essence, we have 2 websites. According to Google search console, we have 19,000 HTTP URLs indexed and 9,500 HTTPS URLs indexed. I've done a larger scale http=>https migration (60,000 SKUs), and our rankings dropped significantly for 6-8 weeks. We did this the right way, using sitemaps, and http and https GSC properties. Google came out recently and said that this type of rankings drop is normal for large sites. I need to set the appropriate expectations for management. Questions: How badly is the domain split affecting our rankings, if at all? Our rankings aren't bad, but I believe we are underperforming our backlink profile. Can we expect a net rankings gain when the smoke clears? There are a number of other technical SEO issues going on as well. How badly will our rankings drop (temporarily) and for how long when we add the redirect to the .htaccess file? Is there a way to mitigate the rankings impact? For example, only submitting partial sitemaps to our GSC http property? Has anyone gone through this before?

HTTPS 301 Redirect Question
Hi, I've just migrated our previous site (siteA) to our new url (siteB) and I've setup 301 redirects from the old url (siteA) to the new (siteB). However, the old url operated on https and users who try to go to the old url with https (https://siteA.com) receive a message that the server cannot be reached, while the users who go to http://siteA.com are redirected to siteB. Is there a way to 301 redirect https traffic? Also, from an SEO perspective if the site and all the references on Google search are https://siteA.com does a 301 redirect of http pass the domain authority, etc. or is https required? Thanks.

Hundreds of 301 Redirects. Remove Pages or Not?
Hi Mozers, I have a website that has literally got hundreds of 301 redirects. I had a close look at these URLs and only some of them have backlinks to it and remaining all of them are not indexing in Google and has got not backlinks at all. Based on what I have noticed experts mentioning, loads of 301 redirects can potentially slow down the site speed. In a case like the website I have, should I completely take off the pages from website to reduce the number of 301 redirects or should I leave 301 redirects? There is no traffic or backlinks coming from these URLs. Malika

Javascript onclick redirects / porn sites...
We noticed around 7 websites which with domains that were just recently registered (with privacy protection). They are using our website keywords/titles and brand name and the sites are mostly porn / junk sites. They don't link to our website directly but use a javascript onclick redirect which is why we think we aren't seeing them in our backlinks report. We've been in business for over 12 years and haven't come across sites like this before. We recently lost our first page rankings for a few of our highest converting key phrases and have been digging in to possible causes. Just wondering if these sites could be impacting our results, and how to figure out if there are more like this? Examples: nesat.net

Should I just redirect all my sites to my main site.
Hi, Over the last few years I have built many sites and own a lot of domain names. Some have high page rank some have high domain authority and some have many back links. I'm finding it very difficult to keep up with all the links and being able to provide quality content for everything. Should I just redirect everything to my one site that make the most money as all sites are for the same industry, but in different categories of that industry. So I could 301 redirect all the sites to the relevant page on my money site. Would it be a problem is 1000's if not 10,000's of links all of a sudden pointed in to one site?

Redirect a temporary IP
I was performing some development work on a client's site recently under a temporary location on the host's server, for example: http://11.22.33.444/~accountname/folder/page.html Google managed to index a couple of pages using this url 😞 I have updated DNS to the correct domain and the site is live, but I am a bit confused in regards to the correct way to create a 301 Redirect for this example or at least a way point it to our 404 page. I am hoping someone more proficient with htaccess can help me out a bit... Thanks!
