    Well hello there!

We run a local directory site for a specific vertical and use several thousand call tracking numbers (one per listing) to track calls to the local business and report on those metrics (number of calls, appointment set, etc).

We are familiar with dynamic phone number insertion to be able to track phone calls back to the type of traffic or campaign sending it.  If we wanted to implement this, it would require an exorbitant amount of call tracking numbers as we already start out with several thousand numbers to begin with.

We are toying with the idea to hide the phone number in the directory listing and require the user to click to show the full phone number. We know this is an additional action required by the user, but we assume that this would then help us see the folks who are more serious about calling the number of the local business.

We could then use that click metric to then tie out all the goals within GA to look at how effective a given medium is and even look at what content is sending traffic that clicks on the phone number.

    Two areas for comments:

    1. Any input on others who use this metric?  Any input on if anyone thinks this is a good/bad metric?  Anyone have a better idea/technique?

    2. Do you think that the search engines would see this technique as a negative? If so, why or why not?

    Thanks!

Yes, I follow you.   Your 90% correlation on click to view phone number metric to calls is better than the correlation we found between our time on page metric to calls so that is good!

Yes, I have been talking about click to call correlation of 90%, not time on a page to call 🙂 Sorry for a confusion.

Thanks Charles for the great input!

Currently, we use a time on business directory page metric to approximate calls.  We did some online surveys to look at how time on a business directory page relates to calls and it was lower than the 90% you mention.  It sounds like the click to view phone number would be a better approximation metric.  We have seen it used in places like Angie's list as well so there may be something there.

FYI - we would still use the call tracking numbers as we need to pull the data on that part of the interaction.  The reason we are looking for a better GA trackable interaction/goal is that we can then use that to fine tune everything else we follow in GA (and the scalability issue mentioned above).  Example, we use Page Value to understand what content leads to conversions.  Right now the Page Value amounts are driven by the goal of time spent on a page in the directory section.  If we update Page Value to use the click to view phone number metric, it could really increase the accuracy of detecting what content drives calls.

Thanks for the confirmation on the second point.  We currently show call tracking numbers for all the local listings and so the "P" portion of the business' NAP on our site is always going to be off on our site anyway. Using the click to show metric would probably not make it any "worse" than it already is.  We ask Santa Claus each year for a schema markup that would let us designate a call tracking number vs regular number, but have not seen it yet.  Maybe this year if we are a really, really good website ...  🙂

            Cheers!

              1. We use click metric to track calls from mobile devices for all our clients. It's decent metric (not good, not bad), simply because if I clicked on phone number, it doesn't necessarily mean that i gonna call it - it might have been a mistake, or i just changed my mind. So, It's a metric to get overall idea how many people are at least interested. From experience, those numbers (clicks to actual calls correlation) are pretty close - about 90%. The only other options there is (as far as I know), is call tracking, but that's what you are doing already and trying to stop doing 🙂

              2. I don't see any reason why it would be bad from Search Engines point of view. The only negative part i see is extra action from user (which you already mentioned) and that crawlers wouldn't be able to see those phone numbers if you do showing through javascript.

Changing Business Address on Google Profile & Citations

local seo nap change of address tool

Hello, I'm looking to change a business address to a new one on a Google business profile (still in the same area but on a different street). So, I'll need to update all citations and website with the new address - Is it recommended to update the citations & website first, and then change the address on the Google business profile, or vice-versa? Looking to do this as safely as possible without negatively impacting the rankings much. I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information on this. Thanks in advance.

What Service Page Strategy Should We Use to Target City-Specific Local Intent Service Keywords?

local seo local ranking factors service pages content optimization service based website

Hey guys! We are targeting a number of cities in the Nassau and Suffolk County areas for foundation repair, insulation, and mold remediation keywords, and we were debating on creating city-specific pages for each location and service, or creating one service page for each type of service that contains all of the services and solutions within that service category for each city. Example: City-Specific Pages for Each Service: One page for say foundation repair, one page for foundation crack repair, one page for foundation problems, etc. (for each target city) Service Category Pages for Each City: One page for foundation contractors that lists all services on one page in sections. Which one do you think is better for local SEO and rankings? Both seem to have their advantages and disadvantages to me. Just to throw a couple out there, the category pages may not rank as high as the city pages for each individual service if our competitors have a whole page designed for that service and we only have a part of a page covering the topic. At the same time, they would save labor hours, technical issues would be less, and they would be condensed, and we would have WAY less mess on the backend. I appreciate your expert opinion on this one. The site is www. zavzaseal.com in case you want to check us out.

                SERP Title Display Issue

                serp title tags

When doing a google search for "Wedding Invitations Toronto", you will find my site www.stephita.com shows up in top 5 results. I'm trying the figure out why the TITLE of the page no longer shows up in the SERP. Only the domain shows up above the link to the page. So you basically see www.stephita.com twice, when the first instance should be the "title" drawing from the HTML code. I did implement the JSON code to provide proper site data structure as well. Could someone check my source, and tell me if I'm missing something, or if I put TOO MUCH stuff there? Thank You!!!!

Local SEO for a business serving multiple small cities

We have a local business that has a showroom in one city, and serve other 5 different small cities (in total 6 small cities). Search volume for the targeted keyword is very low (around 100 each plus minus) with a variety of competition levels. The product is expensive so this justifies the low search volume with a serious user intent.
My question is given the low search volume for each keyword, what would be the best local SEO tactic for this. The website has a DA of 20 with competitors who has similar and higher  DAs. Options I am considering: 1. Create unique pages for each location with unique content (no address available so I will have to use a city name postcode)
                2. Create pages with the same content (but changing the area of service on the URL, H1 and mention the postcode and the radius of coverage twice in the content) and using a canonical tag to solve the duplicate issue.
In this scenario, I will create the main product pages with the address of the showroom, and mention the area of service covered for the other 5 cities.
                3. Given that the 6 cities are part of a greater area, use the greater area to target them all. The keyword of the greater area has a lower search volume than the city keyword.  This might work for keywords with low competition but not for ones with high competition levels.  Not sure how well search engines will rank the keywords that include the greater area and show the pages for searches in small cities. Any advice on which option to go with or any recommendations for other solutions?

Should I use LocalBusiness schema on my home page or Contact Us page?

I know I should only use Organization schema on one page of my site, but I'm not sure if I should use it on the Home page or use LocalBusiness schema on the home page. I was thinking of adding LocalBusiness schema to home page, Organization schema to About Us page and Corporate Contact Schema to Contact us page. Thoughts? Is there a best practice? I can't seem to find much information on what's best to use where.

Spaces between Letters and Numbers SEO question

This is a fun one - Example:  Mercedes Benz is pushing to have all of there vehicle models to coincide with the world branding such as the "C300" is supposed to be "C 300" and the "E300"  is supposed to be "E 300"...  I have a few issues here as when I use Voice Search for "Mercedes Benz C 300"  there is no way (that I know of) to add a space between the number and letter.  In addition, when searching for the "C 300 for sale" Google corrects the text with "Did you mean:  C300 for sale".  I am seeking a way to accommodate both versions of the models WITHOUT adding the both C300 and C 300...etc. to the text on web pages.  OR will Google eventually change the model names over time as Mercedes-Benz regulates the new U.S. naming convention.  Tough question - any thoughts? Thank you for your help -
