Our web site lost ranking on google a couple of years ago. We have done lots of work on it but still can not improve our search ranking. Can anyone give us some advise
-
A couple of years ago the ranking on our site dropped over night. I believe someone working here at the time purchased links about that time. We have been doing lots of work on the site since then to improve it. We can not get our rankings back up on google searches.
Can anyone give us some advise about what to do or where to go for some help that we can trust.

"On the category page - we are wondering whether we should also remove the right side menus ?"
Do you mean the left side menus?
If so, I can give you a simple answer and I can give you a more complex answer.
The simple answer is "if you link to categories and sub-categories that are not directly related to the category you are on at that time, it is at least somewhat of a distraction and dilution issue".
The more complex answer is "it depends, and without a full audit, I can't answer that because there are many other factors to consider, some of which are purely User Experience, some are SEO and User Experience, some are crawl allocation related, and some are pure technical considerations".
-
Hi Alan,
Once again thanks for the advise. It makes a lot of sense when I add it to the information I have worked out while trying to improve our site. Also a lot of these menus etc. were added about the time the rankings dropped.
Just a question. I have removed a lot of the unnessary links on the bottom of the pages.
The way our platform works, we have a home page - which I have removed the right side menus and left side.
On the product page we have removed the right side menus etc. also a lot of the left side - just leaving the wish list.
On the category page - we are wondering whether we should also remove the right side menus ?

Adrienne

I am glad to hear you will work through the issues. Be aware that there is no guarantee that these things alone will do the job, however each is an important step in the correct direction.
-
Hi Alan,
Thanks for your advise.
I think most of the things you mentioned were set up by an expert we had working here and also are features of the platform we us.
I am working on removing the excess links at the bottom of the pages, and will work through your other sugestions.
They sound like they will help us.
Thanks

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you have problems that you either aren't aware of, or don't realize the impact of.
1. The bottom of the main content area of your home page and your footer are spam central for the keyword stuffing. The range of phrases you use that are obviously intended to boost rankings for specific phrase variations is off the charts severe.
2. The scale of topical dilution on the site is also a concern. Individual product descriptions are almost non-existent. Consider the impact of the left side "link to all the things" content, right side "related" and "recently viewed" widgets, and the lower page "Also viewed" content, (and again, that scary keyword stuffed footer), and the "uniqueness" of that page is seriously questionable and you're forcing Google to struggle to trust uniqueness.
3. The shear number of "categories", plus brand funnels, plus costume "Ideas" funnels, just reinforces to me that it looks like the site is trying to rank for "all the variations" (which that footer screams is actually what you are trying to do).
4. Your "Search" subdomain is typical of now proven to be failed "enhanced automated content" that was supposedly a way to get more search visibility a few years back, and yet where all it does is create more duplicate content mess, since it just links back to the main site and is not actual, best practices SEO.
Those are only the first few things I found in a quick check. There's almost certainly a full range of issues you will likely need to get cleaned up if you really hope to ever see a strong, sustainable organic presence.
-
What month did it drop?
-
Can you be more specific than "a couple of years ago"? It's going to be much easier to narrow down if we know what the search landscape was like, what algo changes were happening at the same tuime, etc.
-
I looked in your back link profile and not many SPAM links are available on the website and SEMRush data tells that the website is ranking for around 1.6k keywords (in AU) which was 490 keywords back in 2013. I understand that you rank for 2k plus keywords back in good days but it seems like you are improving and your strategies are working for you.
In my opinion all you need is to accelerate your efforts and keep working and you will see better rankings in the near future.
In order to tell Google that you are actually working on betterment why not changing your content from time to time on your website (different parts of the website) and get some media links back to your website.
I think it should work.
Hope this helps!
-
BTW: love your website (sorry for off-topic)
-
Thanks,
I will try both of those.

Hi Adrienne,
I would try to use Barracuda's tool: http://barracuda.digital/panguin-tool/
sometimes it gives a clue when exactly the drop has happened (and what update has been near that date).
Also you could check Moz's Updates history: https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change
These will help you, if your website has been hit by an algorithmic update.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Without seeing the website, content or links to your site it sounds like a penalty.
You can check the drop in your traffic against algorithm changes here https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change
Also, it could be the keyword you are ranking for - if you were spamming this or using tactics to rank #1 you may have just been penalized.

Jason

I can try to take a look for you, what is your website?
-
Hi Jason,
Thanks for your response. As far as I know we have no warnings in webmaster tools. I am not sure how to tell which links are damaging. Some have been removed.
We lost about 50% of traffic organic traffic. Our site dropped from 1st page to 3-10 page.

Adrienne

Hi Li,
Do you have any warnings in Webmaster Tools for penalties? Have you removed all the damaging links to your site?
When you say dropped over night, do you mean you lost 90% of traffic or did you lose all traffic from a certain source?
Cheers,
Jason

Silly Question still - Because I am paying high to google adwords is it possible google can't rank me high in organic?
Hello All, My ecommerce site gone in penalty more than 3 years before and within 3 months I got message from google penalty removed. Since then till date my organic ranking is very worst. In this 3 years I improved my site onpage very great. If I compare my site with all other competitors who are ranking in top 10 then my onpage that includes all schema, reviews, sitemap, header tags, meta's etc, social media, site structure, most imp speed, google page speed insight score, pingdom, w3c errors, alexa rank, global rank, UI, offers, design, content, code to text raito, engagement rate, page views, time on site etc all my sites always good compare to competitors. They also have few backlinks I do have few backlinks only. I am doing very high google adwords and my conversion rate is very very good. But do you think because I am paying since last 3 year high to google because of that google have some setting or strategy that those who perform well in adwords so not to bring up in organic? Is it possible I can talk with google on this? If yes then what will be the medium of conversation? Pls give some valuable inputs I am performing very much in paid so user end site is very very well. Thanks!

Finding Ranking for search term and increasing ranking
Hi. The company that I'm working with would like to rank highly in google for certain generic search terms (dentist, dentists, etc.). Certain websites the company has used to rank highly in google for generic keywords, but has not for years now since google has revised their algorithm so many times. Moz lists that the company websites are not found in the top 51+ results in google. My first question is: **Is there a way, apart from manually searching the results, to find the ranking position of the website in google? **Ideally, I would like to find a program that will do this. Second, I've been reading a lot of the great articles and comments on Moz, and I've been learning a lot more about SEO. My focus has shifted to spending more attention on User Experience and Social Media instead of placing the exact keywords in the pages / tags of the website. What area(s) should I be focusing on to best increase the ranking of the company website for certain generic terms? Ideally, I'd like to create good quality content, so that users will not instantly click away. I appreciate any thoughts or comments. Thank you in advance!

Not ranking in Google - why???
This will be a bit long, so please bare with me. I have a client in the auto parts industry who wants to rank their homepage for 13 different keywords. We are ranked first page for all keywords in Yahoo! Mexico and Bing Mexico, but not ranking first page at all in Google Mexico. My client's competitor, however, is clearly outranking my client in Google. When comparing both pages, my client's, while not 100% optimized, looks better optimized than their competitor's. Looking at all metrics using Moz, SEMRush, ahrefs, etc... my client's site looks MUCH better on all fronts. I know ranking a single homepage for more than 10 keywords is a difficult task. Our competitor is however, ranking for them, so it's not impossible. The keywords are not even that competitive according to Moz's analysis. I decided to create an optimized page for each keyword to try to rank these pages, but still my client wants the homepage to rank (again, if the competitor is ranking, then it's possible to do this) and I am afraid these pages I created could result in keyword cannibalization ultimately affecting the homepage's possibility to rank. My client had a previous SEO agency working for them and basically all they did was create fake blogs and have lots of keyword rich links directed to the site's homepage. I got the complete link profile from several tools and submitted a disavow requests for as many fishy links I could find, but that hasn't shown any results so far. Note: when looking at the competitor link profile, they have basically just a few links and no external links of real value whatsoever. My client is obviously very frustrated, and so am I. In my SEO experience, it shouldn't be such a difficult task to accomplish, however nothing seems to work even though everything seems to point that my client should rank higher. So now I'm running out of ideas regarding what to do with this site. Any insight you could provide would be SO helpful to me and my client. If needed I can provide my client's homepage URL and also their competitors homepage for you to review. i can also give you any extra information you need. Thanks a lot!

Site Search Results in Index -- Help
Hi, I made a mistake on my site, long story short, I have a bunch of search results page in the Google index. (I made a navigation page full of common search terms, and made internal links to a respective search results page for each common search term.) Google crawled the site, saw the links and now those search results pages are indexed. I made versions of the indexed search results pages into proper category pages with good URLs and am ready to go live/ replace the pages and links. But, I am a little unsure how to do it /what the effects can be: Will there be duplicate content issues if I just replace the bad, search results links/URLs with the good, category page links/URLs on the navi. page? (is a short term risk worth it?) Should I get the search results pages de-indexed first and then relaunch the navi. page with the correct category URLs? Should I do a robots.txt disallow directive for search results? Should I use Google's URL removal tool to remove those indexed search results pages for a quick fix, or will this cause more harm than good? Time is not the biggest issue, I want to do it right, because those indexed search results pages do attract traffic and the navi. page has been great for usability. Any suggestions would be great. I have been reading a ton on this topic, but maybe someone can give me more specific advice. Thanks in advance, hopefully this all makes sense.

Previously ranking #1 in google, web page has 301 / url rewrite, indexed but now showing for keyword search?
Two web pages on my website, previously ranked well in google, consistent top 3 places for 6months+, but when the site was modified, these two pages previously ending .php had the page names changed to the keyword to further improve (or so I thought). Since then the page doesn't rank at all for that search term in google. I used google webmaster tools to remove the previous page from Cache and search results, re submitted a sitemap, and where possible fixed links to the new page from other sites. On previous advice to fix I purchased links, web directories, social and articles etc to the new page but so far nothing... Its been almost 5 months and its very frustrating as these two pages previously ranked well and as a landing page ended in conversions. This problem is only appearing in google. The pages still rank well in Bing and Yahoo. Google has got the page indexed if I do a search by the url, but the page never shows under any search term it should, despite being heavily optimised for certain terms. I've spoke to my developers and they are stumped also, they've now added this text to the effected page(s) to see if this helps. Header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");

My brand is not ranking on Android Google SERPs
In the new blog post here, she links to mobilemoxie, a site which allows you to do searches on various different smartphones. I tried a search for my brand, "ixl.com" on an iPhone 4 and a Android phone, the Motorola Droid X. On the iPhone, our brand appears in #1 like normal, but on the Android phone, our result doesn't appear on the first page. Any ideas as to why this would be the case? We're currently developing a mobile version of our site but we don't have one yet. Could that be the issue?

New web site - 404 and 301
Hello, I have spent a lot of times on the forum trying to make sure how to deal with my client situation. I will tell you my understanding of the strategy to apply and I would appreciate if you could tell me if the strategy will be okay. CONTEXT I am working on a project where our client wants to replace its current web site with a new one. The current web site has at least 100 000 pages. The new web site will replace all the existing pages of the current site. What I have heard for the strategy the client wants to adopt is to 404 each pages and to 301 redirect each page. Every page would be redirect to a page that make sense in the new web site. But after reading other answers and reading the following comment, I am starting to be concerned: '(4) Be careful with a massive number of 301s. I would not 301 100s of pages at once. There's some evidence Google may view this as aggressive PR sculpting and devalue those 301s. In that case, I'd 301 selectively (based on page authority and back-links) and 404 the rest.' I have also read about performance issue ... QUESTION So, if we suppose that we can manage to map each of the old site pages to a page in the new web site, is a problem to do it? Do you see a performance issue or devaluation potential issue? If it is a problem, please comment the strategy I might considere to suggest: Identify the pages for which I gain links From that group, identify the pages, that gives me most of my juice 301 redirect them and for the other, create a real great 404 ... Thanks ! Nancy
