High number of Duplicate Page titles and Content related to index.php
-
It appears that every page on our site (www.bridgewinners.com) also creates a version of itself with a suffix.
This results in Seomoz indicating that there are thousands of duplicate titles and content.
1. Does this matter? If so, how much?
2. How do I eliminate this (we are using joomla)?
Thanks.

Thank you Ryan and Ogy. Those answers are much appreciated.

Good luck & enjoy Joomla

Thanks for the tip Ognjen. I am just learning Joomla. I love it so far but it will take months for me to begin to have any level of comfort with the software.

True, however native friendly url handling in Joomla has serious limitations when it comes to url and metadata handling.
Looking at www.bridgewinners.com, he already has friendly URLs. If using sh404SEF, Jason should ensure to enable .htaccess flie to lose /index.php/ in URLs.
-
In Joomla 1.6 login as an administrator then look at Site > Global Configuration > Site Settings. On the right side you will see SEO Settings. The 2nd option is Use URL rewriting. If you are on an Apache web server using a htaccess file (the most common web configuration) then check the YES box and it will remove the index.php from your URLs.
This change does not require any plugin to work. I have a new, clean install and it works for me.

Jason:

As Ryan recommended, use an SEF plugin for Joomla. We use sh404SEF since 2007 on all our sites. That will prevent many duplicate pages caused by different item ids and other url parameters.
-
if you use friendly URL plugin, then you should be able to block all Joomla URLs starting with index.php and index2.php via robots.txt file. Check this website as an example of Joomla site with additional URLs blocked using robots.txt file: http://www.bulletinbag.com/robots.txt
-
Finally, use a properly configured sitemap extension for Joomla and submit it to search engines. This will tell search engines which pages to consider first if it finds duplicated pages. We recommend using XMAP Joomla extension.
Best,
Ogy

Hi Jason.
Yes, it matters. I can see there is a site linking to www.bridgewinners.com/index.php. That link should be to www.bridgewinners.com/. Since the link is for the wrong page, your home page is not receiving the juice from that link.
How much it matters depends on how many links you have to pages on your site that include index.php in the URL, the anchor text used in those links, the ranking of the linking domain and page, along with how important your search engine ranking is for your site. If you are at SEOmoz, it seems that it matters enough and should be fixed.
I am just learning Joomla now. There should either be an option to use "friendly URLs" or a plugin which provides that feature.

Duplicate content
Hello mozzers, I have an unusual question. I've created a page that I am fully aware that it is near 100% duplicate content. It quotes the law, so it's not changeable. The page is very linkable in my niche. Is there a way I can build quality links to it that benefit my overall websites DA (i'm not bothered about the linkable page being ranked) without risking panda/dupe content issues? Thanks, Peter

Redesigned and Migrated Website - Lost Almost All Organic Traffic - Mobile Pages Indexing over Normal Pages
We recently redesigned and migrated our site from www.jmacsupply.com to https://www.jmac.com It has been over 2 weeks since implementing 301 redirects, and we have lost over 90% of our organic traffic. Google seems to be indexing the mobile versions of our pages over our website pages. We hired a designer to redesign the site, and we are confident the code is doing something that is harmful for ranking our website. F or Example: If you google "KEEDEX-K-DS-FLX38" You should see our mobile page ranking: http://www.jmac.com/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=KEEDEX-K-DS-FLX38 but the page that we want ranked (and we think should be, is https://www.jmac.com/Keedex_K_DS_FLX38_p/keedex-k-ds-flx38.htm) That second page isn't even indexed. (When you search for: "site:jmac.com Keedex K-DS-FLX38") We have implemented rel canonical, and rel alternate both ways. What are we doing wrong??? Thank you in advance for any help - it is much appreciated.

I really need some help with Magento and Duplicate Page Content results I;m getting
Hi, We use Magento for our eCommerce platform and I'm getting a number of duplicate page content results. It mainly concerns the duplicate page content errors for our category pages. Firstly It seems like the product type and filter options highlighted in the picture are causing duplicate page content Also one particularity category is getting a lot from duplicate page content errors , http://www.tidy-books.co.uk/shop-all-products I understand that this category page is using duplicate pages of other category pages so I set this to exclude them from the site map but it looks likes its till being picked up? I've attached the csv file showing these errors as well. - > Any help would be massively appreciated Thanks filter.png moz-tidy-books-uk-crawl_issues-01-OCT-2014.csv

How to avoid duplicate content
Hi, I have a website which is ranking on page 1: www.oldname.com/landing-page But because of legal reason i had to change the name.
Technical SEO | | mikehenze
So i moved the landing page to a different domain.
And 301'ed this landing page to the new domain (and removed all products). www.newname.com/landing-page All the meta data, titles, products are still the same. www.oldname.com/landing-page is still on the same position
And www.newname.com/landing-page was on page 1 for 1 day and is now on page 4. What did i do wrong and how can I fix this?
Maybe remove www.oldname.com/landing-page from Google with Google Webmaster Central or not allow crawling of this page with .htaccess ?0 -

Are duplicate page titles fixed by the canonical tag
Google Web Master Tools is saying that some of my pages have duplicate page titles because of pagination. However, I have implemented the canonical tag on the paginated pages which I thought would keep my site from being penalized for duplicate page titles. Is this correct? Or does canonical tag only relate to duplicate content issues?

Huge number of indexed pages with no content
Hi, We have accidentally had Google indexed lots os our pages with no useful content at all on them. The site in question is a directory site, where we have tags and we have cities. Some cities have suppliers for almost all the tags, but there are lots of cities, where we have suppliers for only a handful of tags. The problem occured, when we created a page for each cities, where we list the tags as links. Unfortunately, our programmer listed all the tags, so not only the ones, where we have businesses, offering their services, but all of them! We have 3,142 cities and 542 tags. I guess, that you can imagine the problem this caused! Now I know, that Google might simply ignore these empty pages and not crawl them again, but when I check a city (city site:domain) with only 40 providers, I still have 1,050 pages indexed. (Yes, we have some issues between the 550 and the 1050 as well, but first things first:)) These pages might not be crawled again, but will be clicked, and bounces and the whole user experience in itself will be terrible. My idea is, that I might use meta noindex for all of these empty pages and perhaps also have a 301 redirect from all the empty category pages, directly to the main page of the given city. Can this work the way I imagine? Any better solution to cut this really bad nightmare short? Thank you in advance. Andras

No index directory pages?
All, I have a site built on WordPress with directory software (edirectory) on the backend that houses a directory of members. The Wordpress portion of the site is full of content and drives traffic through to the directory. Like most directories, the results pages are thin on content and mainly contain links to member profiles. Is it best to simply no index the search results for the directory portion of the site?
