Help, site traffic has dropped significantly since we changed from http to https
-
Heya, so I am just in charge of the content on the site, and the SEO content, not the actual back-end stuff.
A little under 2 weeks ago we switched to https, and our site traffic has been down a lot ever since. When I SERP check our keywords, they don't seem to have dropped in rankings pages.
Here is what I got when I asked our dev guy if 301 redirects were put in:
I did not add any redirects so all of the content is accessible on both unless individual links get hardcoded one way or the other. The only thing in place is a Cloudflare plugin which rewrites links in cached pages to match the way its accessed, so if for example you access a page over https you don’t get the version cached with a bunch of http links since that will throw up mixed content warnings in the browser. Other than that WP mostly generates all its links to match whatever protocol you are accessing the current page with. We can make specific pages redirect one way or the other in the future if we want to though...
As a startup, site traffic is a metric we track to gouge progress, and so I really need to get to the bottom of if it was the change from http to https that has causes the drop, and if so, what can we do about it?
Also, in case it is relevant: the bounce rate is now sky high (ave. 15% to 64% this last week!)
Any help is very welcome! Site: https://mobileday.com
Thank you!

Hi MobileDay! Did these answers help?

John gave you some fantastic answers.
He just told you exactly what you need to do a couple things I thought I could share with you.
When adding HTTPS this I found this reference invaluable
https://www.deepcrawl.com/knowledge/best-practice/the-zen-guide-to-https-configuration/
Then from checking out your existing 301's you are in need of a canonical that everything that is https or http redirects to a secular canonical URL. https://mobileday.com use https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/canonical/ you want the canonical to have the absolute link. Do a search and replace.

Like this
NOT
rel="canonical" href="//mobileday.com/" />
|
In order to be sure that you are redirecting properly use
https://varvy.com/tools/redirects/ to check your redirects
then sign up with a free account on
it will continually monitor your robots.txt, Canonicals redirects everything for free it's awesome. the tool displays redirects from www and non-www versions of a url using both http and https.
you definitely need to 301 your site to one canonical URLSEE a bigger photo below and available via the URL herehttp://i.imgur.com/mI7PM6s.png
www
No redirect
Final status code: 200
no www
No redirect
Final status code: 200
www (https)
1 Redirect
https://www.mobileday.com
** 301 redirect**
https://mobileday.com/Final status code: 200
no www (https)
No redirect
Final status code: 200
Here is a reference showing is fairly normal to lose ranking when you add HTTPS hopefully you did contact Google's search console your site should be added there a total of four times and you pick the canonical of the four sites
- http://www.mobileday.com
- https://mobileday.com <- this is where to point the other 3 urls
- https://www.mobileday.com
You will want to pick your chosen canonical which appears to be https://mobileday.com
Considering you're using cloudflare you can create rewrites as well as 301 redirects inside of the CDN/WAF using page rules
Please keep in mind that when you're setting up the HTTPS:// for the first time using a low time to live or server caching time with cloud flares (HSTS),
https://blog.cloudflare.com/enforce-web-policy-with-hypertext-strict-transport-security-hsts/
is going to keep you from making mistakes that cannot be reverted for whatever the remainder of the value is. Whenever you do set it up in cloud flare I recommend you set it for 24 hours see how it works use this to add your site to browsers https://hstspreload.appspot.com/

Rule Patterns
A pattern is the definition of what URLs a rule should act on. It can be as simple as a verbatim match, or complex with wildcards. For purposes of Page Rules' patterns a URL can be composed of:
<scheme>://<domain>:<port><path &="" query=""></path></port></domain></scheme>
remember to check everything before making the browsers forward to https automatically and do it for a short time first.

Hi MobileDay -
Well, sounds like you have some issues on your hands! Hopefully I can help sort it out.
First, get those redirects in place! There is no reason for users to be able to access it on both non-secure and secure. If you made the move to implement HTTPS, you want your users there as it helps with trust. Also, you're spreading your link equity. It looks like the search engines are ranking HTTPS, but that also means that the links going to any and all http pages are likely not being counted towards HTTPS. This is likely hurting your longtail traffic, which only you can see in Analytics.
Second, your canonicals are relative and not correct. It's rel="canonical" href="//mobileday.com/" />, which I am surprised to see since you are using Yoast SEO (so I guess you are on Wordpress). A quick way to help fix your duplicate content issues is to a) make those absolute and b) point them to where you want the crawlers to go (I suspect HTTPS).
A canonical is a band-aid though and the search engines do not always respect them. The right fix is a 301.
Also, more things to check:
- Are the URLs in your sitemaps HTTPS or HTTP? They should be the one you want to rank.
- You should declare where your sitemaps are in your robots.txt file (I don't see them here - http://mobileday.com/robots.txt or here - https://mobileday.com/robots.txt)
- I assume you have both HTTP and HTTPS verified in Search Console. Look at if your impressions have dropped on HTTP and see what is going on with HTTPS. This will tell you a lot.
- Regarding bounce rates, what else changed? I wonder if there is an issue with your HTTPS implementation and it's not working correctly on some mobile devices (or desktop browsers). Dig into your Analytics to see which platforms and browsers have a high bounce rate, and solve from there. You should also check to see if it's a specific page type that is bouncing a lot to see if there is an issue with that page type.
Good luck!

What website changes (technical) SEOs can ignore confidently? Google's perspective!
Hi community members, I am looking after SEO at our company and there are lots of changes happening about our website; especially technical changes. It's hard for me to look after every deployment of the website like change of server location, etc. We generally agree that every change related to website must be notified by SEO to understand the ranking fluctuation and how search engines welcome them. I just wonder what technical deployments of a website I could confidently ignore to save time and give a go ahead to technical team without interrupting or waiting for my approval. Thanks

Site appears then disappears from Google
Hi, This is my first post to the Moz community. I hope someone can help me, as I'm at my wits end 🙂 Since mid to late April, my client's home page keeps dropping from Google rankings on and off on the desktop in incognito and non-incognito browsing. It seems to always be visible on mobile phones though. One day it's on page 4, the next day it's not anywhere to be found (even though some of her other pages rank). The site is here: evgeniaribinik.com I have done some blog writing (just text) for this client over the last few months, and recently she asked for some SEO help. After looking at her website, I noticed that she had a plugin called WordPress SEO on her site. She wasn't using this for the blogs, however. I don't think she did much of anything with SEO, but she did say that for the last few years, she was always on page 3 or 4 of Google. In mid/late April, she saw that she wasn't ranking at all for the keyword "boudoir photography nyc" anymore, despite a few years of ranking for it. I told her Yoast would be good to use. However, after she installed it, the same issues keep happening. Right now, she has Yoast and WordPress SEO plugins installed (I'm not sure if this is causing an issue as well). But I really can't figure out why she keeps going on and off page 4. She also asked me to optimize older blogs that she wrote herself for SEO. When I look at them, they don't have meta descriptions, good titles or good keywords. I realize this is hurting her, but why would her site be fine for years and all of a sudden not now? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me! Jill

Fixing my sites problem with duplicate page content
My site has a problem with duplicate page content. SEO MOZ is telling me 725 pages worth. I have looked a lot into the 301 Re direct and the Rel=canonical Tag and I have a few questions: First of all, I'm not sure which on I should use in this case. I have read that the 301 Redirect is the most popular path to take. If I take this path do I need to go in and change the URL of each of these pages or does it automatically change with in the redirect when I plug in the old URL and the new one? Also, do I need to just go to each page that SEO MOZ is telling me is a duplicate and make a redirect of that page? One thing that I am very confused about is the fact that some of these duplicates listed out are actually different pages on my site. So does this just mean the URL's are too similar to each other, and there fore need the redirect to fix them? Then on the other hand I have a log in page that says it has 50 duplicates. Would this be a case in which I would use the Canonical Tag and would put it into each duplicate so that the SE knew to go to the original file? Sorry for all of the questions in this. Thank you for any responses.

Can anyone recommend a tool that will identify unused and duplicate CSS across an entire site?
Hi all, So far I have found this one: http://unused-css.com/ It looks like it identifies unused, but perhaps not duplicates? It also has a 5,000 page limit and our site is 8,000+ pages....so we really need something that can handle a site larger than their limit. I do have Screaming Frog. Is there a way to use Screaming Frog to locate unused and duplicate CSS? Any recommendations and/or tips would be great. I am also aware of the Firefix extensions, but to my knowledge they will only do one page at a time? Thanks!

For a real estate website, is a different mobile site warranted vs a responsive site?
I researched the major real estate websites: Zillow, Trulia, Remax, Keller Williams, Century 21, etc. They all have a separate mobile site and not a responsive one. The client wants it to be easy to search for properties from a smartphone. Is it possible to get a responsive version of a real estate website on a smartphone?

Http://www.domain.com/services/city or http://www.domain.com/city
Hi, I have a website created on a WordPress Platform. My site is in the "Service" industry and we perform the same service for many different "cities." My question pertains to the Navigation Bar and SEO. Is it better to have a "Service" tab on the navigation bar - that has sub navigation that lists all the cities on a drop down menu. When this happens the URL string looks like http://www.domain.com/service/city The other choice would be to create individual TABS on the NAV bar, by doing this the URL string would look - http://www.domain.com/city . I could be wrong, but I am assuming the http://www.domain.com/city is better than http://www.domain.com/services/city for SEO purposes, ....if I am correct is there a way to make SUB Menu URLS appear as http://www.domain.com/city ? Any input as always would be appreciated best regards, Jimmy

Will launching this site get my E-commerce site penalized?
Hello.. I am wondering if you guys think launching a site like this is a good or a bad idea. All of the links on it go directly to the exact corresponding page on the ecommerce site. Do you think Google will penalize my site for launching sites (i have many other domains that i will be setting up similar to this) like this? Thanks...

Footer backlinks for sites I've developed
I link back to my website via my company name on the footers of sites I develop. Lately I've been changing this to my keyword and mixing and matching. This has been done for new sites I create and old sites I've not seen any benefit so far after a couple of months. Most my clients are hosted on the same server as my main site that it links back to. 1. Is this a bad idea to link back on the same IP?
Web Design | | sanchez1960
2. Is footer backlinks to the main developer going to annoy Google?
3. Should I change my main site's server, will it help? All my competitors seem to do it and as far as I can tell they seem to get better results than I do. Because I'm now changing them the reason I see no benefit? Thanks0
