Can a "site split" cause a drastic organic search decline?
-
Let's say you have a client. They have two big, main product offerings.
Come early April of this year, one of the product offerings decide to move their product offering over to a new domain.
Let's also say you had maybe 12 million links in your inbound link portfolio for the original domain. And when this product offering that split opened their new domain, they 301 redirected half of those 12 million links (maybe even 3/4s) over to their new domain.
So you're left with "half" a website. And while you still have millions of links; you lost millions as well.
Would a ~25-50% drop in organic traffic be a reasonable effect? My money is on YES. Because all links to a domain help "rise" the page authority sea level of all URLs of the domain. So cutting off 50-75% of those links would drop that sea level a somewhat corresponding amount.
We did get some 301 redirects that we felt were "ours" in place in late July... but that really accounted for 25% of the total amount of pages with inbound links they took originally. And those got in place almost 4 months after the fact.
Curious what other people may think.

My first instinct is obviously to say "if you lose 50-75% of your links, will your rankings drop" - well ... yes? I mean that seems fairly obvious?
But I didn't want to be that obtuse so I thought about it a bit longer. And really, the question is much more teachable than that over-simplified answer.
What you are talking about is domain-level vs. page-level link factors. ANY link to your site affects the whole domain (domain factor) but a direct link to an inner page has more page-level effect. If you look at the Moz Ranking Factors Survey you will see this:
Domain-Level, Link Authority Features: Based on link/citation metrics such as quantity of links, trust, domain-level PageRank, etc.
And that, right there, is your answer. On the domain-level, we assume quantity of links, trust & PR of those links affects the domain as a whole. If you have poor quality links it can also tank the whole site even if they all direct to one inner page. So yes, the long answer is "quantity and quality of links can affect domain-level metrics and thus affect your rankings."

Even though the terrain is different, battle on the web and battle on the ground have their similarities. Generals on land have always use "divide and conquer" and "unite the clans" as effective strategies for victory.
If you chop a website into two websites then you divide your link popularity and divide your domain popularity. You also eliminate opportunities for cross-selling and larger shopping carts in checkout. Visitors may spend less time on the site, there are half as many reasons to talk about it or link to it.
I can think of lots of good reasons to combine websites. I can't think of many (maybe any) good reasons to divide them.

Making Filtered Search Results Pages Crawlable on an eCommerce Site
Hi Moz Community! Most of the category & sub-category pages on one of our client's ecommerce site are actually filtered internal search results pages. They can configure their CMS for these filtered cat/sub-cat pages to have unique meta titles & meta descriptions, but currently they can't apply custom H1s, URLs or breadcrumbs to filtered pages. We're debating whether 2 out of 5 areas for keyword optimization is enough for Google to crawl these pages and rank them for the keywords they are being optimized for, or if we really need three or more areas covered on these pages as well to make them truly crawlable (i.e. custom H1s, URLs and/or breadcrumbs)…what do you think? Thank you for your time & support, community!

Search box within search results question
I work for a Theater news website. We have two sister sites, theatermania.com in the US and whatsonstage.com in London. Both sites have largely the same codebase and page layouts. We've implemented markup that allows google to show a search box for our site in its results page. For some reason, the search box is showing for one site but not the other: http://screencast.com/t/CSA62NT8 We're scratching our heads. Does anyone have any ideas?

Where the "fudge-nuggets" are my internal links?
Ok, so... Google Webmaster Tools Internal Links are not showing any links to my site's homepage. I only link to the homepage by wrapping the logo with the link throughout the site. Does Google need these to be text links to show them? Search traffic decline after redesign and new URL
Howdy Mozzers I’ve been a Moz fan since 2005, and been doing SEO since. This is my first major question to the community! I just started working for a new company in-house, and we’ve uncovered a serious problem. This is a bit of a long one, so I’m hoping you’ll stick it out with me! ***Since the images aren't working, here's a link to the google doc with images. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1I-iLDjBXI4d59Kl3uRMwLvpihWWKF3bQFTTNRb1R3ZM/edit?usp=sharing Background The site has gone through a few changes in the past few years. Drupal 5 and 6 hosted at bcbusinessonline.ca and now on Drupal 7 hosted at bcbusiness.ca. The redesigned responsive design site launched on January 9th, 2013. This includes changing the structure of the URL’s, such as categories, tags, and articles. We submitted a change of address through GWT shortly after the change. Problem Organic site traffic is down 50% over the last three months. Below, Google analytics, and Google Webmaster Tools shows the decline. *They used the same UA number for Google analytics, so that’s why the data is continuous Organic traffic to the site. January 2011 - Dips in January are because of the business crowd on holidays. Google Webmaster Tools data exported for bcbusiness.ca starting as far back as I could get. Redirects During the switch, the site went from bcbusinessonline.ca to bcbusiness.ca. They were implemented as 302’s on January 9th, 2013 to test, then on January 15th, they were all made 301’s. Here is how they were set up: Original: http://www.bcbusinessonline.ca/bcb/bc-blogs/conference/2010/10/07/11-phrases-never-use-your-resume --301-- http://www.bcbusiness.ca/bcb/bc-blogs/conference/2010/10/07/11-phrases-never-use-your-resume --301-- http://www.bcbusiness.ca/careers/11-phrases-never-to-use-on-your-resume Canonical issue On bcbusiness.ca, there are article pages (example) that are paginated. All of the page 2 to page N were set to the first page of the article. We addressed this issue by removing the canonical tag completely from the site on April 16th, 2013. Then, by walking through the Ayima Pagination Guide we decided for immediate and least work choice was to noindex, follow all the pages that simply list articles (example). Google Algorithm Changes (Penguin or Panda) According to SEOmoz Google Algorithm Changes there is no releases that could have impacted our site at the February 20th ballpark. However - Sitemap We have a sitemap submitted to Google Webmaster Tools, and currently have 4,229 pages indexed of 4,312 submitted. But there are a few pages we looked at that there is an inconsistency between what GWT is reporting and what a “site:” search reports. Why would the submit to index button be showing, if it’s in the index? That page is in the sitemap. Updated: 2012-11-28T22:08Z Change Frequency: Yearly Priority: 0.5 *GWT Index Stats from bcbusiness.ca What we looked at so far The redirects are all currently 301’s GWT is reporting good DNS, Server Connectivity, and Robots.txt Fetch We don’t have noindex or nofollow on pages where we haven’t intended them to be. Robots.txt isn’t blocking GoogleBot, or any pages we want to rank. We have added nofollow to all ‘Promoted Content’ or paid advertising / advertorials We had TextLinkAds on our site at one point but I removed them once I satarted working here (April 1). Sitemaps were linking to the old URL, but now updated (April)

Nobody Can Answer This? What Can Google Tell About Videos?
I uploaded a video to youtube one time and then went to upload it again, but saved differently with different tags. Youtube rejected the second upload as being the same as the first. Really, it was the same... just a different file with different tags. Now, I was thinking about making and uploading some similar but not identical videos for embedding on some web pages. Was thinking I'd make the voice overs different, but the images mostly the same montage. Do you think Youtube/Google will see it as the same video? I kind of assume that it didn't fly when I first tried it some time ago because youtube was looking at the audio in the way it can make a transcription. Do you think if the audi,o, file name, tags were different, it wouldn't matter if the video was the same? Thanks!

Is there an search marketing / keyword tool in existence that can solve my need?
I'm looking for a tool that can do the following:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PTC4SEO
Organize a keyword universe and its data/metrics:
-track keyword data over time (search volumes/trends, relative competition metrics, rankings,
etc)
-Sort keywords into buckets/silos/ad groups
-allow you to assign individual keywords to multiple silos/groups and show the relationships between groups based on keyword relationships.
-incorporate a site map
-tie keyword targets to static pages, informational content (SEO) & landing pages (PPC)
-help with KW and/or competitive research (optional)
-tie into web analytics / marketing on-demand software (optional) I know that this is a lot of functionality, but for enterprise search marketing, this could be a game changer for my strategy (if it exists currently) or for the industry (if it doesn't exist). Please share you solution suggestions here...0
