How much SEO damage would it do having a subdomain site rather directory site?
-
Hi all!
With a coleague we were arguing about what is better: Having a subdomain or a directory.
Let me explain some more, this is about the cases:- Having a multi-language site: Where en.domain.com or es.domain.com rather than domain.com/en/ or domain.com/es/
- Having a Mobile and desktop version: m.domain.com or domain.com rather than domain.com/m or just domain.com.
- Having multiple location websites, you might figure.
The dicussion started with me saying: Its better to have a directory site.
And my coleague said: Its better to have a subdomain site. Some of the reasons that he said is that big companies (such as wordpress) are doing that. And that's better for the business.
My reasons are fully based on this post from Rand Fishkin: Subdomains vs. Subfolders, Rel Canonical vs. 301, and How to Structure Links for SEO - Whiteboard FridaySo, what does the community have to say about this?
Who should win this argue?GR.

There are a few good use-cases for subdomains; higher education sites use them frequently, and often have organizational need for it. Another instance I can think of is international websites that want to have different sites for each country in which they operate. This can help each division operate a site without having to go through HQ every time they need an update.
That being said, given the typical website, with SEO considerations, I always favor subdirectories for the simple reason of keep all domain metrics (links, authority, etc.) together, rather than splitting the metrics across subdomains.

Hi!
That's a great article and the comments are highly valuable. The statement they say is that it depends on the content.
They push you to increase the efforts on content rather than in a small change like this.
Do you agree?Personally it feels for me that both should be important, the content and this SEO thing.

Hi Gaston,
Check this debate including Rand Fishkin @ https://inbound.org/blog/the-sub-domain-vs-sub-directory-seo-debate-explained-in-one-flow-chart
Thanks

Moving multiple Sites to One Site and SEO Impact/Ideas
Hi there, We are in the process of moving 2 sites with higher page authority to another site we own (that is our company brand), so essentially 3 sites into one. We're at risk of losing a lot of SEO from the original 2 sites that have all the product information. We are doing this since we merged companies a couple years back and need one web precense. Anyhow, the site launch date is in 3 months and the recommendation is to start moving content over prior to that for top pages, which is a big undertaking when we are launching all the pages again with new content, redeisgn and moving sites in 3 months. If it's the right move, we should do it, but I just wanted to get opinions on how others have handled something similiar when moving to a site with lower site authority and trying not to lose rankings.

Video SEO for Google
I was wondering what the prime factors were to make something rank for a video on Google. Does anyone have any suggestions? I think that length may be important, but I don't know what the ideal run time is. Hypothetically for local SEO, would I be better off doing a tag like "Mercedes Buffalo NY" or do individual tags of "Mercedes" and "Buffalo" Thanks!

Site has no SEO done on it. It wasn't considered during design. What to do first ?
They opted for videos to explain to people what the website is about, but it ain't working for them. What steps would you take in order to get this site to rank higher without completely changing the design(changing design is out of the question they are low on funds). They also built a blog on wordpress.com and added a .me domain to it. For obvious reasons I'm not mentioning the website.

Migrating a site
Hello, I have what a I think it's a noob question.. I have a medium size website and need to put it into maintenance for the next 2 months, and afterwards activate a completly new site. My client asked me to do this, cause the same people whoe run the constant flow of information on the site, are the ones who are going to develop the new site, so he wants to just close it out So... what are the steps for doing this with minimum impact on any SEO advances made this past months?.. How do I tell the search engines, Hey, just under maintenance for a while....then... i'm back in the game but this is my new structure. and the old one should go here
