How important is keyword density?
-
Several leading experts say that keyword density isn't all that important. What do you think of keyword density? Do you incorporate it into your day to day activities?
-
In my limited experience it's about clarity, not density. EGOL makes a good point, if your page is clear and well written about its subject, in general you should be alright.
-
It is still important to some extent. If you intend to rank for "Chinese Burgers" but you are writing more about "Cheese" instead, Google will assume the page is more likely about "Cheese" than "Chinese Burgers". If you get some backlinks with the right variations of anchor text that includes "Chinese Burgers" in the phrase, that will solve Google's dilemma, but assuming no backlinks and no other external factors, keyword density is still pretty important.
I know this could be confusing (as I was not too long ago) as lot of 'experts' say its not important - just do your own little test with brand new domains and see what kind of difference it makes.
Its true however that there is no magic "density" to this - just make sure you don't use some other keyword phrase more than your MEAT keyword phrase.
-
I'm with EGOL...I don't pay any attention to keyword density. I will be sure to have my keyword in the title. And as I write, I will mention it as it comes out naturally, but I'm not paying any attention to how often I've mentioned the keyword.

There is a good article on this subject here:

-
I pay zero attention to keyword density. I write naturally - when you are trying to write well that is a big enough job.
Setting KW density goals is a good way to screw up a great article.

Both Alan and Charles seem to have hit the nail on the head. On the one hand the keywords have to be in the content, and don't be surprised when you get customers asking you why!
The search engines follow what the human reads. Content that is stuffed with keywords, especially your meta-tags and alt-tags, will quickly get noticed by Google.
My rule of thumb is;
Main keyword - 3 times on homepage, also on every other page possible
Sub-level keywords - 1 time on homepage, wherever possible inside the website
-
I think it is important to have the keyword phrase you are targeting at least 1-2 times in the body content and it helps to have it in the title tags, image alt tags, and URL. Natural writing patterns typically don't have the same phrase repeated several times and we often see pages that rank very highly for a phrase without multiple instances of that phrase on the page.
"A complete myth as an algorithmic component, keyword density nonetheless pervades even very sharp SEO minds. While it's true that more usage of a keyword term/phrase can potentially improve targeting/ranking, there's no doubt that keyword density has never been the formula by which this relevance was measured." -Rand Fishkin
-
My own rule of thumb is to incorporate each of the top two or at most three primary phrases at least once, the top phrase at least twice, in the content - with the content being at least 400 words (or more) - and the more content, the more it needs to then have the partial phrases thrown into the writing. But there's no set formula for keyword density anymore. too many other factors to consider these days.

Optimize homepage or category for main keyword?
Hello, we have an advertisements website. Usually in each country we have this one "main" keyword which has the largest amount of searches. Now we have done both ways in different markets. Sometimes optimize the homepage www.example.com for the keyword, sometimes optimize **www.example.com/thekeyword **the category page. I do not have solid data which works better, as Keyword difficulties are too big to compare. The good thing with category is that i would have internal links pointing to it and keyword in the url. Questions: 1. Which do you recommend better?

How to tell when a directory backlink or other backlink is worthy of disavow tool? Especially when a keyword is not ranking passed where it should.
Hello, I jumped aboard as SEO for a client, who seems to of had been hit by panda and penguin back in 2012 of April, the panda part I feel I've fixed by creating better content, combining pages that were same topic into one, basically creating a better content experience that relates better to search terms users are searching for. Once the site was redesigned and relaunched all keywords improved minus one, the main keyword they want to rank for. Created a landing page for it, that is very nicely optimized for that keyword and it's brothers and sisters, however that page isn't used by google since it's brand new with a PA of 1. Doing a backlink audit I found 102 links out of 400 using the same anchor text as the keyword they want ranked for, they also have synonyms anchor text for other links too but not quite as much. Most of those 102 domains using the main keyword anchor text are directories, in my opinion I'd declare all of them spam, however there are a few with DAs higher than 50, making me little more nervous to disavow, since I want to make sure we get out of the penalty if we were hit by penguin but also don't want to ruin the ranking for other keywords we're doing better with, since they are longtails and short, but very relevant to users. How is the best way to determine if a site / directory is spammy enough that it's penalizing you and how could I approach the anchor text issue with backlinks? 99% of these links I cannot have changed, since they're directories I doubt many have had a human mess with them in a while. Sidenote* If you're going to post a link as a response, try to summarize what that link will be about, as many times links are giving as an answer but end up not really providing the meat we were seeking. Thank you!

Keywords based domains redirecting to a site is considered spam isn't it ? And if yes, then is it considered spam in all cases whether those domain based sites are related or non related to main site?

My keyword ranking suddenly went down in google.
Hi, Need urgently help, one of our website http://www.bannerbuzz.com keywords ranking is down suddenly since 6-11-2012, even we don't have done any changes on the website & we were on top on many keywords. We have done only one change recently is we have moved our website from shared server to dedicated server on last 21st October & we can see some traffic fluctuation after to redirecting from shared server to dedicated server, also website load time has been increase in Google Analytic, so it that reason to get rank down suddenly?, because all keywords has been down. We have also some affiliate sites like bannerbuzz.ca, bannerbuzz.co.uk & bannerbuzz.com.au which design and coding structure is as same as bannerbuzz.com, so is that a problem (Duplication issue)? We have tried to find out the solution for the same, but we didn't get any proper reason to get rank down suddenly. Can it happened due to dedicated server which we have moved recently or Google has changed anything in algorithm? Can we put website in Google reconsideration to know proper reason about the website? Following are the keywords on which we loose the ranking. Banners

Keyword stuffing found, how does Google treat my business name that contains keyword?
Hi, SEOmoz found 72 occurances of my keyword 'widgets' on our front page. I'm trying to cut it down but alot of the time the keyword appears alongside the company name 'Mega Widgets' . Will Google distinguish between the use of the keyword within a typical sentence and having it alongside the company name? Or should I put in a hypen (mega-widgets) or surround the company name with quotes ("mega widgets") to tell Google its a legit combination/phrase and I'm not trying to stuff in the keyword?

Hyphens in keywords
Anyone know if hyphens affect the SEO value of keywords? So is: Sandwich-making course Worse than: Sandwich making course I'm talking about in titles and body text. I already know that too many hyphens is a bad idea in URLs and domain names.

Does a TM in the keyword have effect?
If I include TM in a keyword string, does this make it another keyword or does Google ignore that? Example: Kentucky Hot Sauce vs Kentucky Hot (TM) sauce. Of course the TM would be done properly via ™ Cheers.

If I 301 re-direct a piece of content (A) to another piece of content (B) and B is unrelated in subject matter to A, will the referring search keywords to content piece A hold for content piece B?
For example, I have a piece of content about furniture and it ranks in top 5 in the SERPs for the phrase "furniture". If I were to 301 redirect that piece of furniture content to a piece of content about trucks, would the referring keyword "furniture" continue to rank over time for the trucks content? My instincts tell me that in the short term the content piece about trucks would receive traffic for the term "furniture", but over the long term, the trucks content would lose rankings for the term "furniture" since the piece has to do with trucks and not furniture. Any thoughts?
