Organic search traffic stats "leaking" into other channels?
-
Hi Everyone
I have a website and am slowly getting to grips with SEO.
Last week I enabled a new channel in google analytics which was "email" so I could track effectiveness of the weekly emails we send out.
The good news is that a ton of traffic is now being assigned to the email "channel" in GA but my organic search traffic in channels is now down week on week.
That feels odd as my overall traffic to the site is up, week on week.
Does anyone have any experience of new channels coming on stream and canniballising old ones? Could it be that some of the traffic associated to organic search previously was actually coming from my email, I just didn't know it?
thanks all!

Thank you for the response.
Great suggestions on looking at source and the blog - will do that.
thank you again!

Thank you - the content timeliness could be an issue.
School results came out two weeks ago and I had assumed that the (large for us) spike in traffic that generated would have "washed" out now but perhaps it's still there...
thank you again

Hello,
Completely agree with Logan. He raises a very good point about Google Analytics being good at subcategorising traffic.
There is another potential solution that may be worth considering. It requires looking at the timescale and quality of the traffic that is coming through from email.
Google uses all kinds of things as ranking factors for SEO, including site usability. If email contributes a large amount of traffic to your site, but has a high bounce rate/low pages viewed/reduced time on site, it is possible that these could be negative ranking signals to Google. This would mean that although it could be getting more traffic a page is losing ranking.
I would recommend having a look in Webmaster Tools and, under Search Analytics, have a look at Pages and Position. If you see a decrease then I would suggest looking at the quality of the traffic from email. You could even look at the conversion optimisation of your landing pages.
I would recommend this blog for a fairly in-depth look at ranking factors. If you find you want to look at Conversion Optimisation then there is a fantastic book called "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman (if you haven't already read it).
It's always hard to recommend SEO solutions but I hope this helps. If nothing else it should give you somewhere to start.
Cheers,
Luke

Hi,
Google Analytics is pretty good about assigning proper attribution to channels. If you had been sending out emails prior to tagging the links, that traffic was falling under either Direct or (Other).
PPC is the only medium that would cannibalize organic since you can have impressions in both spaces at the same time. The drop in organic traffic could just be the ebb and flow of your business. Since most businesses have seasonality, year over year comparison is often a better yard stick for performance.
Is there a particular search engine that you can attribute the traffic loss to? Or perhaps a piece of content received more entrances last week simply due to the timeliness of that content?

Quick Fix to "Duplicate page without canonical tag"?
When we pull up Google Search Console, in the Index Coverage section, under the category of Excluded, there is a sub-category called ‘Duplicate page without canonical tag’. The majority of the 665 pages in that section are from a test environment. If we were to include in the robots.txt file, a wildcard to cover every URL that started with the particular root URL ("www.domain.com/host/"), could we eliminate the majority of these errors? That solution is not one of the 5 or 6 recommended solutions that the Google Search Console Help section text suggests. It seems like a simple effective solution. Are we missing something?

Keyword use in city specific "homepages"
My company, RightFit Personal Training, is a marketplace for people to find independent personal trainers based on preference. I am currently in the process of expanding nationally, and each city essentially has it's own homepage. Currently, the url of each city page ends in the name of the city only. For example, the url for the Houston page is www.rightfitpersonaltraining.com/houston/. The issue here is that I actually wanted my contracted developer to add the state abbreviation as well as the words "personal trainers" to the end of each city page url. So what I really wanted to see out of the Houston personal training page was www.rightfitpersonaltraining.com/houston/tx/personal/trainers. Do you think it is worth it for me have my developer go back and change the URL structure of the city homepages to reflect the latter? This should also benefit the structure of the personal trainer profiles, because they could all fall under their specific city homepages. For example, I think it would be to my benefit if each trainer profile url ended in /city/state/personal/trainer/trainername. Thoughts?

How to use rel="alternate" properly for mobile directory.
Hey everyone, For the URL - http://www.absoluteautomation.ca/dakota-alert-dcpa-p/dkdcpa2500.htm - I have the following tags in the header: rel="canonical" href="http://www.absoluteautomation.ca/dakota-alert-dcpa-p/dkdcpa2500.htm" /> rel="alternate" media="only screen and (max-width: 640px)" href="http://www.absoluteautomation.ca/mobile/Product.aspx?id=37564" /> Yes Google WMT is reading these as duplicate pages with duplicate titles, meta descriptions etc. How can I fix this? If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! Traffic and impressions down
I am confused on what is going on. I recently converted my website to wordpress. I kept the same url structure to the best of my abilities (without the .html) and 301 all .html to / So whatever was www.domain.com/page.html to www.domain.com/page/ The old CMS was a proprietary cms done by the company who originally designed the website. It was poorly put together and was really buggy. I decided to move to wordpress due to many limitations particularly for SEO. Now traffic is down about 10% and looks like the downward trend will continue, also, impressions are down by about 75%. Any thoughts on what could be happening?

Penalization for Duplicate URLs with %29 or "/"
Hi there - Some of our dynamically generated product URLs somehow are showing up in SEOmoz as two different URLs even though they are the same page- one with a %28 and one with a 🙂 e.g., http://www.company.com/ProductX-(-etc/ http://www.company.com/ProductX-(-etc/ Also, some of the URLs are duplicated with a "/" at the end of them. Does Google penalize us for these duplicate URLs? Should we add canonical tags to all of them? Finally, our development team is claiming that they are not generating these pages, and that they are being generated from facebook/pinterest/etc. which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Is that right? Thanks!
