Is there a penalty for linking to sites that are all hosted on the same IP address?
-
Hi...
We're doing some reciprocal link building and a gentleman has been kind enough to offer me sever additional links for the exchange. All of them (5) are on the same IP address as one of his links to which we have already linked. They are in a related field of endeavor, legal websites. If I make the swap with him, is Google going to disregard, penalize or otherwise marginalize my efforts?
Thanks!

Thanks for hte clarification, Theo...
Now , about this "first make sure these extra links will actually help rather than hurt you"... I'm not the sharpest tack just yet... how would you ensure that links like this would have a beneficial or detrimental effect? Is there a tool or method about which I am unaware?
Thanks!

I don't think they are incestuously linked (as in cross-linked...) They have good metrics. The webmaster does actively solicit links, but he pulls from a variety of themes and topics, so the legal sites in question may be on the same IP as sites about art, etc. Some of the links they have on their sites may link out to relevant blogs they have created.
When Matt Cutts directly addresses this (same IP addresses) he says "no problem":

That devaluation would be based on the fact that you've already received links coming from that IP (and therefor the added links will matter less than if they were links from different IPs).
Do note the reply by EGOL. Before agreeing to this 'bonus deal', first make sure these extra links will actually help rather than hurt you!

Thanks Theo.
When you say "because they attach greater values to links coming from different IPs than from the same IP" is that "value" as perceived by Google? The sites in question all have very good metrics in the MozBar, but are you saying that they may look good on their own but as links they will somehow be "devalued" by the search engines?

I would be careful. Are these sites trading links with other websites that are heavily involved in manipulative linking? Are these sites incestuously linked to one another?
The best way to get in trouble is to link to trashy websites that are manipulating.

Disregard: no
Penalize: no
Otherwise marginalize: yes (because they attach greater values to links coming from different IPs than from the same IP)

Maintaining link value during site downtime
We are nearly finished rebuilding a client website, but they want to have a "dark launch" period for 4 days prior to the public site launch. During that 4-day period, we will be converting their server, so they want to take down the old site and instead send users a "coming soon" message. Although we have the old site pages set up to 301 for the public launch, I'm concerned that this dark period is going to hurt the link value on the old site pages. During this 4-day period, should we be setting a 503 status code on the old site that automatically serves the "coming soon" message? Or, should all old site pages be temporarily redirected to the "coming soon" landing page? Any other recommendations are appreciated as well.

Should I nofollow Geo-located links on a site?
I run various sites that use Geo-location to place related links in navigation menus on a page. For example, if you land on the home page, we will see that you are in Florida and then in one of the content boxes on the page, show job listings that this site has in Florida. We also give the option to search for other jobs or use other navigation options. The idea is to try to help the user along the best we can, but ..... What opinions do persons have here on if these links should be nofollowed as GoogleBot will always see links to places in California etc. - wherever Googlebot is crawling from? Would this then be confusing as we are a site that focused on the entire US and not just California etc Thanks!

Site links show spam
Hi folks, I'm working on a website that runs on WordPress and was not updated by the owner, this has resulted in a malware injection and now when you search the companies name in Google, the site links appear with words like Viagra, et al. I've seen this a number of times, so I went through the code and have removed all the malware. I presume I now have to wait for Google to recrawl the website and update the site links? Is there anything else I should be doing to speed up the process? Thank you 🙂

Multiple Domains on 1 IP Address
We have multiple domains on the same C Block IP Address. Our main site is an eCommerce site, and we have separate domains for each of the following: our company blog (and other niche blogs), forum site, articles site and corporate site. They are all on the same server and hosted by the same web-hosting company. They all have unique and different content. Speaking strictly from a technical standpoint, could this be hurting us? Can you please make a recommendation for the best practices when it comes to multiple domains like these and having separate or the same IP Addresses? Thank you!
